Egyptian commandos rescued Israeli ambassador; more protests on Saturday

Aimee_Kligman
Yesterday, late evening and into the wee hours of the morning, the world witnessed an attack by protesters on Egypt's Israeli Embassy in Cairo which forced the Israeli ambassador and his family to fly back to Tel Aviv. What has just been revealed now is that Egyptian commandos entered the building and ushered 6 people who were trapped inside to safety. The security wall that had been built around the embassy had been breached, and Egyptian protesters managed to get into the foyer of the embassy, seize pamphlets and forms and throw them out of windows.

It is not known whether the Israeli ambassador was one of the six people. Prime Minister Netanyahu was in contact with President Obama requesting assistance for the safekeeping of the property and its diplomats. Protesters refused to leave the area until such time as the ambassador was expelled from the country. The Israeli flag was torn down and replaced by the Egyptian flag. Four people died as a result of clashes with policy, one of them from a heart attack. More than 1,000 were wounded.

    • I was worried about this when the Revolution started, and the same thing is true of Libya.

We really don't know what the character of these protesters are, nor who will lead the wolf pack in terms of reform.

It's entirely possible the fundies will take the forefront and turn Egypt into another extremist nation.

What you say is possible Saladin, except that there are great differences between Egypt and Libya. The US is a very close ally of Egypt, whereas with Libya, it hasn't been worth the political capital for Obama to get involved, and he was right. France took the lead and we stayed behind and though Qaddafi is still around, his regime is gone for all intents and purposes.
With Egypt there are much closer ties between the US and the army, and it's always been that way. In fact it is the army that is the recipient of the billions that the US sends, and they are not about to forfeit that aid.
The youth of the April 6th movement was not involved with the violations of the Embassy. Which means that it had to be the mostly uneducated, easily angered youth that were coaxed to do what they did. That's all I am able to tell you.

That's what I'm afraid of, Aimee, the young hot heads. Although I'm greatly relieved that Israeli lives were spared, those who stormed the Embassy wasted an enormous opportunity if they destroyed valuable documents when the Ambassador and his family fled. They definitely need cooler heads running the show.

I understand from reading the Arabic press that the documents were pamphlets and things that usually occupy the lobby of the building. Nobody made it into the quarters of any of the 80 or so personnel, that were also evacuated. I am now investigating a lead from an Egyptian friend that some of those young hot heads were incited by Islamist radicals.

No, I wouldn't. I don't like to qualify universal statements, especially subjective ones, unless I'm absolutely certain.

I will agree, however, that most righteous anger is better called self-righteous anger, and that most of it has less to do with the issue itself and more to do with regular angers boiling over. Most of which aren't such noble emotions.

You have to be more focused on what you demand. the original idea of the revolution was to democratize the country. I have a few Egyptian friends who keep me informed, and one sent me a video in Arabic of an islamic extremist that was shouting to the young people to go and attack the Embassy. I couldn't post it because Americans would not understand it. My feeling is that you are getting distracted and this is the reason your revolution will not succeed.

I am not specifically referring to you, but the youth who is demanding change in general. When you attack an embassy, that is not part of demands for democratic reform. You will lose the respect of the world.

Well thanks for the warning. Too bad that me and my brethren were too busy making our stone axes and chasing woolly mammoths to really pay attention. Every now and then, though, we do get a chance to check out what's happening in the world through message boards.

"It wasn't some enlightened protest demanding liberalism, it was an Islamic revolution demanding sharia law."

An Islamic revolution in a Muslim country. Fancy that! And by the way, to an American who loves her country and is no Neanderthal, your avatar is rude, crude and offensive.

You're sarcastic but many on here a few months ago thought the Egyptians Muslims were revolting because they wanted liberalism, the NY times and Starbucks.

And my avatar has nothing to do with this article but nice diversion.

It's odd that my reply to you keeps getting erased automatically, so I'm trying again. Israel has no friends but the US. And I agree that we have way too many things that are more pressing, but we are trying to prevent a bloodbath.

it is not about who israel has to help, but who israel can rely on in regards to the egyptians.it has more to do with our influence over the egyptians than our relationship with israel.

Yes, Haiti is very useful as an ally....Russia is not kissing their ass at all...Israel has become a haven for the oligarchs that had to leave the country for their 'business practices'...Germany is only a friend because of Holocaust remorse that has been wearing thin since Angela Merkel told Netanyahu to stick it. I forgot about Canada and Australia, so I'll give you those two, although in an emergency, neither would be able to bail them out. So we're back to the US.
