As one of the 12 members of a congressional “supercommittee” charged with developing a plan by Thanksgiving for cutting $1.5 trillion from the federal budget deficit, Senator John Kerry has the potential to influence huge decisions about the future of social and military spending.

For that reason, he and the other committee members are certain targets for lobbying by all manner of individuals and organizations.

Kerry says he will have none of it.

“I’m not meeting with a lot of lobbyists; I’m meeting with people I choose to meet with, who can inform me, assist in the process of crunching numbers and dealing with consequences, and so forth,” Kerry told the Globe last week in his first extensive interview about his committee membership.

    • Kerry is a disappointment. If he really cared about his country, he would have fought for the presidency, rather than sit around while it was stolen from him!

    • It sounds like a great idea. It is unfortunate that I do not believe him.

People that believe we can jump start an economy by cutting spending do not understand the way things work. Simply put an economy is money that keeps moving from person to person.

Accountants and economists are nothing more than bean counters and they prefer to cut back when times are slow. I have always been a salesman and when times are slow I know that I have to work harder to make the same amount. Next month I will spend over a thousand dollars at a Home Show advertising for my business. Other area painters may decide they cannot afford to spend the money, I say I cannot afford not to go after the business.

When working class Americans have no money to spend and wealthy Americans choose not to spend money the only place we have to turn to is our government. If they actually cut spending then we drive the economy deeper into recession. Money spent by our government on entitlement programs does not go into a hole. It goes into the economy and when working class Americans get the money they spend it on things they need. This money flows upward into the hands of wealthy Americans. Flow up economics works much better than trickle down.

Neither do I, as a matter of fact, I think he has already been bought or he would not have said a thing about it... Just my Opinion...

    • So..... Bush stole an election from him, that he too was unwilling to fight for...

Thanks for enabling tyranny Mr. Probably actually won the election but let the republicrats have it anyway....

I just don't even think his fellow politicians respect him.... I mean he's not Gore, and Gore decided to step down for Bush..... (sorry Jan, I don't blame Bush I blame Gore & Kerry for having no intestinal fortitude....)

So what was the recourse after the SC decision?

The deadline for the recount had passed.

Are you proposing Gore should have tried a military coup of some sort?

    • Staying away from lobbyists must be like going through detox for a senator. I’ll bet he gets the shakes, retches “pea soup”, and crawls into the fetal position. But, seriously, that is a nice precedent to set. I wonder how many of his colleagues will join him? (Party of one, anybody?) He’ll be like the Tom Selleck character, Jesse Stone, out there in the lonely house with his sad-looking dog. Hey, it’s better than drinking alone.
But, seriously again, it would be nice to see a twinkling of ethics in the political system, it’s been so long. (Did it ever really exist? It must have, there were a few great politicians in the past, not too many though.) It is nice to at least hear the suggestion. How will we ever know if he follows through on it?

    • Kerry has been a liar since he shot himself in the butt with a bloop tube. Notice how the Super Congress has been named a "supercommittee". This gang of 12 should not see the first meeting. While Kerry does not seem to take as much from lobbyists as others he still has his hand out. I don't believe him. All 12 of these in the Super Congress will have targets on their backs for the lobbyists to go after.

I had a different take, these guys are going to be the scape goats for congress and the president.

I guess the money from lobbyists will compensate them.

    • Yeah! that's RIGHT. Who needs those pesky Democrats! They ALL should just sit down and close their pie-holes! We KNOW they can't be trusted! All they do is meet with lobbyist after lobbyist planning how best to screw over the middle class!

And we KNOW who we can trust to protect our rights, entitlements and ensure a bright and sunny future for America!

That's right! The Tea party! They will whip all those Democrats into towing the line!

Because when it come to the rubber meeting the road, the track record of the Republicans are a whole lot better that a Democrat any day of the week and twice on Sunday!

      Boo Demcrats! Yeah Republicans!

I somewhat agree.....but I see it more as one is like catching Spanish influenza and the other is comparable to coming down with a cold.

One you get the sniffles and a sore throat..the other? It could KILL you.

And then you have to worry about who will nurse you back to "good health".

I'll leave it up to you to decide which one is which as far as I'm concerned.

      ATCHOOO!

      Gesundheit!!!

    • Yeah, right. Believe it if you will. Wasn't that kind of statement made my a former congressman now POTUS? Why that's right. Obama made that same pledge and look what happened when we believed him!

How many lobbyists, then, are you meeting, Senator? That's the kind of vague answer that just pisses people off....especially when it comes to this controversial-as-hell "supercommitte" that's probably going to end up fucking us all.

I don't think any of them, regardless of party, would know what to do without consulting with their money providers. I say this with sadness and just a touch of cynicism.
