    • Spoiler alert, it doesn't say that there is a shortage or anything...

The article just explains how silly the promotion system is currently set up. It is based on Cold War or Draft era needs, not the needs of today. They will pull a technical specialist to lead troops into combat, even if you've never done or wanted to do it. They will also stick some gunner who wants to be in the field behind a desk just because that is the next "step" in the promotion ladder.

I see what their getting at, but at the same time I don't necissarily think that people in the military should choose their exact job. If someone is trying to do something they shouldn't do, then they will have more access to be able to do it.

    • What I find stunning is that there are less than 100,000 actual infantrymen in the whole armed forces.

I abhor war and condemn violence, but if you're going to fight multiple wars at once, you need more than the same people to keep leaning on over and over and over again.

The last thing I want to see is a draft, but I do recognize that a draft immediately puts the young generations' skin in the game (literally), and that would be a powerful motivation to get them to vote and protest.......which is what we really need.
