How much power does the Secretary of the Treasury wield over the President of the United States? Apparently enough to refuse a direct order, according to a forthcoming book.
In “Confidence Men: Wall Street, Washington, and the Education of a President,” by Pulitzer-winning journalist Ron Suskind, a picture of tension is painted between the president and his economic team, with the extreme example of Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner ignoring an order to have Citigroup dissolved.
Suskind added that the president has been “systematically undermined or hedged by his seasoned advisers" at nearly every turn, according to an excerpt published by Politico.
Geithner is quoted as explaining, "I don’t slow walk the president on anything."
The book also sheds light on the culture of the Obama White House, and in an excerpt obtained by The Washington Post, a number of top female advisers say their roles were largely marginalized.
“This place would be in court for a hostile workplace,” former communications director Anita Dunn is quoted as saying, according to the Post. “Because it actually fit all of the classic legal requirements for a genuinely hostile workplace to women.”
Suskind's book is expected to hit stores on Sept. 20.

It's too bad the President didn't order Geithner to rape and pillage the peasants. He probably could have gotten behind that.

I don't care what the 1834 Banking Act says; if he did that to me as President, I would have made sure that I put someone at Treasury to do the job that I wanted done. With or without anyone's permission.

Agreed. The financial cabal (both inside and outside of government) is not going to go quietly into the night. A president is going to have to ignore the fear mongering to make substantive changes.....and not be afraid of the difficult transition to get us to greener pastures.

Read the 1934 Banking Act. Neither the President or Congress can order the Treasurer to do anything. The power is limited to appointment only. From there it's all Geithner

Never particularily liked Carvell but I agree when he says Obama basically needs to cut the bait he's surrounded by,Geitner especially,100% Wall street. It's like they're deliberartely guideing him wrong and he's too busy not wanting to speak up or hurt their feelings.Wake up Obama, you're getting screwed,we're getting and not a kiss to be seen unless it's the asses of the rethugs and the billionaires they represent.

When O'bama surrounded himself with Banksters and Crooks as his Cabinet members, what the hell did he expect... ethics?

This is the principle reason I knew I made a mistake 3 weeks after the election in 2008. Geithner was the first Cabinet announcement, and I knew at that point who'd be really calling the shots of this presidency.
By the way, don't think for a moment that this kind of "I don't slow-walk my opinions" rebutting orders doesn't happen with the Secretary of State or Defense either.
Anyway, I look forward to the book.....it's on my list:)

Isn't it wonderful. The boss gets the shaft from the employee. I would have fired his ass with no questions asked. James Carville is right Obama should fire all of his advisor's and a few department heads like his AG.
No wonder why this President can't get anything done he is always chopped off at the knees. - 8 months ago

No problems. I'm just mad that this resident is trying to get everyone together for the good of the country. When your own employees buck your orders and he still keeps him around he has class for doing that. Me I would have fired his ass in a heart beat as a lesson to every other employee that i will not tolerate this kind of Bull Crap.
