    • My family had the good fortune to meet a 'lost boy' who made it to America. Quite an impressive young man. Good natured too. Broader perspective of what really constitutes a bad day than most of us will ever master. After listening to a co worker known for constant complaining over petty things, he stopped and asked her after one of her rants: "Is it as bad as seeing your best friend eaten by a lion?"

That was a lesson my daughter overheard and integrated into how she deals with stress.

The young man went on to a congressional internship, further studies in Public Policy, and talking a few congressmen into getting arrested outside the Sudanese embassy on lunch hours, as a way to help raise awareness of the plight of his peope among the population in the US. Have to tell you, his email to me when Republic of South Sudan was officially born, brought tears to these cynical old eyes of mine. No way I will every fully grasp his sense of triumph and joy for his people, but damn, it was moving none the less.

Too many Dinka lost. Treasure the boys who made it. Treasure the families who sent sons to flee the fate others had designed for them. Pray for the future of these people.

And many, many thanks to a young man named John Majok, for letting me be one of the people he shared his joy with.
