During the recent Republican and Tea Party debates the response of the crowd to questions concerning the death penalty and a hypothetical uninsured man who faces the possibility of death because he can't afford insurance was to say the least not something any American should be proud of. We should be better than that. I'm all for punishing criminals and in the worst cases even I can see where the Death Penalty is the only recourse but it doesn't mean I'll find any joy in the event. As far as helping someone who is in need goes I believe we all should be responsible for ourselves but when there is no other solution the government should be there to help. What else is it for if not to help those who need it? Of course it doesn't surprise me that in a nation where Professional Wrestling, Mixed Martial Arts and Football draw huge crowds and millions of dollars are spent on athletes at every level from early childhood to adulthood while the Arts and Education are treated as if they are a disease that a percentage of the populace would get a kick out of seeing someone put to death. With that said if things keep going the way they are eventually those Football stadiums will be converted into places where the rich watch everyone else fight for a chance to live even the simplest of lives. Perhaps I'm exaggerating a bit but if the previous debates are any sign then maybe I'm closer than even I think to what the future holds in store.
