Greg Gonzales, a retired sheriff's deputy, and Wesley Dutton, a former New Mexico livestock investigator, told The El Paso Times that the FBI uncovered some "big names" in the course of one investigation, but it was dropped without result.
Both men helped with several investigations during their 18 months as confidential informants, the report says, including one that ended with the arrest of FBI special agent John Shipley, who was allegedly selling guns to cartel members.
But far from a sole bad apple, these two whistleblowers claim drug cartels wield tremendous influence over law enforcement and elected officials, even throwing fundraisers and parties attended by "bankers, judges, and law enforcement officers." Large campaign contributions, they added, have been made to help influence key appointments.
And perhaps one of the most outrageous claims in their report: law enforcement is said to have personally escorted drug shipments, dropped from small aircraft onto private ranches near the border, to their next stops along the distribution chain.
Both men also claim to have been physically threatened if they ever brought this information to light.
All of the allegations were reportedly laid out in a letter to Gov. Rick Perry (R), who's office confirmed to the Times that they had received it and passed the information along to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). Reached by Times reporter Diana Washington Valdez, DPS director Steven McCraw initially expressed interest in talking to the men, but then called back 30 minutes later saying he'd looked into the matter and found their claims to be untrue.
Both men have sought help from the advocacy group Judicial Watch, but the organization has yet to take any action.
Despite the blistering nature of the Times' report, their claims had not been picked up by other media outlets by late Monday. The FBI refused to comment.

This is why I get so upset over certain politicians leading the electorate to think that they are going to change policy, and then they don't...
As far back as alcohol prohibition, they bought off all the; cops, politicians, etc. they could, and hid/ran from the rest. It's disgusting, between the "drug-bubble" that's created hyper-inflated prices which the government does profit from, and the pharmaceutical industry pushing even amphetamine in the form of Adderal to children.....
It's nothing but a joke to the ones that know, what used to be a few state prisons in every state is virtually a state prison in every county across this country... And the cartels are funding them... Anyone high up that gets caught goes to "club-fed" and watches satellite T.V. in their private room and has conjugal visits by escorts.... And the slave-class gets to fight over enough reprocessed soy proteins to have enough nourishment to live...
Horrible and the accepted standards of quality of "food" for inmates is outrageous... Prison should have never become a "for-profit" enterprise...
But that's our culture, prisons everywhere, wars everywhere, and views that differ from tacit approval in the national political debate is completely demonized...
Oh-no, we can't have anymore "terrorists".... To bad terrorists already run the country.....

If the truth be told, American's would be shocked to find out how embedded the drug cartels really are in US politics on both a local and national level, as well as their involvement with our largest banks who launder their money.

I don't find it surprising that cartel money is finding its way into the hands of some politicians and law enforcement officers. From the cartels point this is money well spent. Doesn't get the public's back up and avoids headlines, while accomplishing their goals - to continue.
NiceN said;"end prohibition and constitute regulation" With that sentiment I couldn't agree more. As the problem is already here this is the only course that makes any sense at all. At least for the public.
The fate of the marijuana issue in Ca. is a fact I still have trouble accepting. I felt sure, this time, that common sense would prevail. I thought that if any state could do it, it would be CA. It grates. Why the voters agreed to continue an archaic law passes all reason. The statistics are self evident. Yet here we are.
It's common knowledge that the US drug problem pales only to the economy. The continued prohibition encourages lawlessness; where it's repeal would unite US citizens and aid in problem #1. I just can't believe it. How stupid are we? The characterizations of marijuana advocates during this legalization attempt were straight out of the 60's. 50 years ago.
I ask myself why does our govt want this to continue? I wish I had an answer for that. The gov. did not cast the votes, the citizens did. Looking at whats to be gained vs. what's to be lost with legalization should leave no doubt in anyone's mind which would be the better choice.
I love my country. Served it during the VietNam war. Yet because I choose a less harmful recreational drug than alcohol I'm branded a criminal. I'm not a criminal. To you young folks, keep it up. It's worth fighting for. Doubt now I'll live to see it. Somebody carry the banner for me, okay?

Yes, they want tougher laws against all drugs including Marijuana and they are actively fighting ALL of the Medicinal and Legalization efforts. They spend Millions on TV ads to fight legalization and Many more millions on Political contributions which is now Easy because of the recent SCOTUS decision. Cartels and Foreign Governments have more influence over most of our politicians than the people do because of their Massive amounts of money.
I know that their propaganda is working because a relative that formerly had no opinion about legalization is now an active campaigner against All legalization and medicalization efforts in his state after he said “I found out on TV how Bad it would be to allow drugs to be legalized because the government would give them to our kids in convenience stores!” He is such an IDIOT that nobody in the family ever tries to change his mind about anything, we all know it is useless. The problem is that our education system has gotten so bad that there are more and more people like him these days. Oh, by the way, did I mention that he is a high school dropout, (“I know everything I Need to know”), and a dues paying Tea Party member?
The ONLY way to destroy the Cartels is to Legalize drugs, (All of them!), but legalizing Marijuana alone would cripple them!

Who do you think supplies the party favors to our government crooks? If the American government really wanted to end the narco violence, it would end prohibition and constitute regulation. This strategy also plays more into government pockets by means of the private prison system and flailing health care.
