Ron Paul, Rick Perry and other rightwingers want to turn the clock back to 1900. What was life like then??
http://www.alternet.org/story/152397/ron_paul%2C_ri...
In 1900, the American South was essentially run by a religious fundamentalist terrorist faction that perpetrated untold murders with impunity. Women were deprived of individual rights and therefore limited to the chattel position to which the Bible conscripts them. Children worked in factories, where they were often severely injured or worse. In short, 1900 was a time of Dickensian squalor in America. As for disaster relief in that year, Melissa Harris-Perry reminded MSNBC viewers that “somewhere between 6,000 and 12,000 people died in the Galveston hurricane – so many bodies that people couldn’t bury them all. Barrels of whisky were handed out to dull the horror of the funeral pyres that burned across the city for weeks on end. That seemed to be the extent that the government could respond, to dull your pain with some free liquor. ‘Sorry, we can’t do more.’”

The CR that funds the gov for 7 weeks after 9/30 has about $3.65 billion in it for disaster relief. As it should it also has cuts to fund that amount. It was passed by the House and Harry Reid shelved it. Said he would not even bring it to the floor for a vote. Said there was no hurry, the Senate would come up with something on Monday. One side of the HOuse has done its job. The Senate is the obstructionist group. Making the Republicans the bad guys in this little dust up is a lie.

Tying cuts to much needed relief borders on criminality. Our local thug, Rep. Michael Grimm, joined in on the passage of the stacked House bill, which will be dead-on-arrival in the Senate. Many Staten Island residents suffered flood damage after the hurricane and are in desperate need of FEMA funding. While Grimm plays politics, his neighbors suffer. Do you think that people will remember this in 2012, or is the attention span too short?

"Price: FEMA Disaster Relief Operating on Fumes -- GOP Still Holding Funds Hostage to Budget Cuts"
Uploaded by RepDavidPrice on Sep 21, 2011
Today, Representative David Price (NC-04) spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives, urging his colleagues to quickly shore up the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Disaster Relief Fund before it runs out of money on September 26. In the wake of Hurricane Irene, Rep. Price, the top Democrat on the House Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee which funds FEMA, has repeatedly clashed with congressional Republicans who still insist that additional disaster relief funding be offset by cuts to other government programs.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------We know what the Republicans have been saying about FEMA and it's funds.
Let's take a moment to hear what a Democrat has to say from one of the states that have been hit hard by Huricane Irene, shall we?
Rep. Price puts the issue succinctly and concisely into words that anyone can plainly understand what the difference is between the Republicans and of those on the other side of the aisle from them.
What we have here is Rep. Price communicating why Republicans want to not only halt the progress FEMA is making but to stop any governmental progress that could help lift this country out of it's doldrums from the lack of jobs this plan would create.
It's to prevent any chance the plans Democrats AND President Obama wants to put into place to actually HELP the public sector through difficult times by providing jobs!
I call it the "Hurricane Irene Republican Job Killer Plan" and it should be sold to the American people as such.
Talk about a lot of hot air coming from the majority of Congress! If they had exhaled simultaneously, they might have driven that hurricane back out to sea!
Who are the job-killers now?
Boehner, where are the jobs you promised YOUR Republican majority in congress would create this past November?

Republicans will go as far as they are allowed to go and if they get away with it it will be the people who are suffering fault. Why people aren't storming Republican campaign offices, breaking windows etc like they did during the 2008 elections with Democrats? because America is deathly afraid of Republicans and that's the way they like it.

This is so true, RevKen. How many square feet does one need - these mammoth energy-guzzling homes are obscene. How many cars does one individual need? How much food is wasted each and every day? My grandparents and parents survived the Depression and frugality was bred into our bones. The heartless refusal to share with those in need, the endless striving to get the latest electronic gadget, the spoiled rotten attitude of so many kids growing up in homes where "things" have been substituted for love, discipline and quality time, is more than disheartening. It is saddening. It is shameful.

This is what continues to baffle me most about the people who continue to vote for these GOP thugs. It used to be the normal reaction of normal living, breathing people that when they would see an act of outright inhumanity it would be met with outrage and disgust and if they were a politician they would pay the price of getting voted out. But now these right wing zombies will suspend their decency and humanity to continue voting Republican. What has happened to so many people, when now the majority of this country seems to wallow in hatred of their fellow man?

I've referred folks to this before, a book by John Taylor Gatto, one of the most awarded schoolteachers in the city of New York, called "Weapons of Mass Instruction." I believe that many people have lost the ability to think for themselves, i.e., think critically, analytically and rationally. Not only that, but most peole's diets are so poor and they spend so much time watching TV and what passes for "news" that they are not informed as to the root causes of the main issues in politics, government, the economy and welfare of the people.
