War has a heavy cost, a heavy cost that we don’t think about in our daily busy lives. That cost is your children or your grandchildren dying before their time, being severely injured or mentally scarred for life.
War is your brothers and sisters being taught to kill other people — and to hate people who are just like themselves and who don’t want to kill anyone either.
War is your children seeing their friends killed before their very eyes or seeing their limbs blown off their bodies.
War is genocide; it is hundreds of thousands of human beings dying years before their time.
War is millions of people separated forever from their loved ones.
War is the destruction of homes which people worked for.
War is the end of careers that meant as much to others as your career means to you.
You cannot put a cost on a human life, but the financial cost on war is now running into the trillions of dollars. As illustrated by Cost Of War Dot Com.
War is the imposition of heavy taxes on you, other Americans, and on people in other countries — taxes that remain long after the war is over.
War is the suppression of free speech and the jailing of people who criticize the government.
War is the imposition of slavery when young men and women serve in the military.
War is goading the public to hate foreign people and races.
It is time to end the war and bring the troops home.
If you like the majority of Americans want to end the bombing and occupation of the Middle East.

You would think that after entire milennia of one war right after another, that people would have learned by now. The problem with nations is that they are able to maintain wars overseas because the core of the nation is not directly exposed to its horrors – all they see is the tax and debt. This leaves the politicians to spin it however they want. Anyway, war is a foolish and pointless endeavor, and has no place in a society that claims to be enlightened.

I think that was the original plan but now they are considering what will it look like if we pull out and mass killings startup before the election. It would be nice if politicians would do something that was right "Right Now" instead of scheduling it for political advantage. But alas the citizens are too riddled with ADHD to remember anything futher out from an election than thirty days.

War in the middle East has been going on for more than 10 years:when the Ottoman Empire collapsed the British used the Arab tribes to fight the Turks. It was T.E.Lawrence,a British officer who carried this out.War has been continuous for almost 100 years. This has been about the inquisitional control of the Region's oil resources, and this is why the United States, Britain and their allies will continue to prosecute war well into the future. Afghanistan is the corridor
for the planned pipeline linking Caspian sea oil ,Iraq's oil to the seaport of the Arabian sea. There also a plan between Iran and Pakistan for pipelines. The Russian Federation are also in the mix as their oil interests are under threat by this rivalry for oil revenue. All the elements for Armageddon are there. The situation is much more complex and serious than this short piece has presented. - 8 months ago

The original plan was to establish permanent military bases in the area as a staging ground for the invasion of practically every country in the middle east. Some of you will likely recall the "Plan For a New American Century." Luckily, it mostly fell through.
But the DoD's interest clearly supersede that of the people, and apparently even elected representatives as strong as the President.
Empire and Republic are incompatible because the needs of an empire demand constant war, which is only acceptable in self-defense (or defense of others) in a Republic.
No doubt this is partially why we have a "Department of Defense" instead of what it used to be called, the Department of War. Even though we haven't had a war of defense since WWII and haven't been in danger on the mainland since the Civil War.

You make no mention of the true meaning and cause of war:war is about acquiring resources. In the case of the modern mechanised age it has been invariably about oil resources.Japan's attack on Pearl Harbour was to knock out the American fleet to enable the Japanese to get control of the oil,tin rubber and materials needed for Japan's modernisation.Japan has no natural resources, apart from a small amount of coal.
The bottom line is:governments need to tell the truth a share equitably the resources of this world.Unless the truth is told we can never even begin to address the real issues. The same,of course applies to the situation in the Middle East, where in the case of Iraq's oil the government nationalised the oil production. The Western powers were apposed to this and therefore needed a pretext to invade a regain control. - 8 months ago

chris2pi:
It would be stupidly simplistic to think that war is *just* about acquiring resources. That's only one small part of a very large picture.
Otherwise, why aren't we going to war with Saudi Arabia.
War is a mixture of political interests, hatred, economic policies, ideological conflicts, racial and cultural tensions, arms races and a simple quest for domination.
Resources can be a part of that, but entire wars have been fought where there was no physical gain to be had at all.

Just a further thought to your reply:can you tell me one war that has not been about economic hegemony? One needs to bare in mind that all human endeavour is about some sort of material gain.Social Darwinism has promulgated the thesis of survival of the fittest.Ultimately that can be translated to a struggle between Nation States for dominance. I cannot see the logic of your position.Trillions have been spent on these wars only because the returns in terms of resources and control of markets are the ultimate aim of the imperial powers, whose agenda is economic and social control of the populace. This is what imperialism is all about. Moreover,if you care to nominate any war or conflict that is not about the above,I will identify and clarify for you just how it fits in with this paradigm.

Russia's war with Afghanistan bled their economy and lead to the downfall of the USSR. On top of that, we helped the Afghans fight Russia. Doesn't something seem wrong with this whole picture? If I was Russia, I'd secretly be helping the Afghans, what is probably happening.

Osama Bin Laden openly claimed that his goal was to draw the U.S. into the same intractable conflict that defeated the Soviets.
Although it would be an absurd exaggeration to say that's what caused the downfall of the USSR.

When one understands the geopolitical elements:the close location to the Caucus Mountains;Caspian Sea oil resources;and the rivalry vis-a-vis Anglo-American oil concessions this whole Scenario becomes crystal clear.

The Soviet Union's decline was due to the emphasis placed on keeping pace with the Western powers in terms of the arms race and the space race. The 'Cold War' drained the economy, therefore little was left to funnel into essential goods and services for the Soviet people. Therefore, the powers that be shifted gear from a "command economy" to a more marked based economy.

Wars are the second greatest evil that human societies can perpetrate. The first is dictatorship, the enslavement of their own citizens, which is the cause of wars.

Funny then that so many Democratic-Republics across history are so warlike. Chief examples being us, the Athenians and the Romans.
War is caused by hatred, scarcity and intractable economic and political differences. It's also caused by greed, opportunism and scientific/military advancements.
This is why war has existed for as long as humans have had recorded culture, and it's not going to stop anytime soon.
