    • Van Susteren Explains Why Anti-Fox Clip With Occupy Wall St. Protester Got Cut

The New York Observer‘s Drew Grant (formerly of Mediaite) is reporting on a YouTube clip that shows an Occupy Wall Street protester peppering Fox News’ Griff Jenkins with criticism of the network, in an interview that was never aired. Why the clip didn’t air is the subject of some speculation, but according to Greta Van Susteren, the simplest explanation is the right one.

Jenkins does, at one point, responds to criticism of the network by saying, “Alright, fair enough. You have a voice, an important reason to criticize myself, my company and anyone else.”

The video, according to Grant, features Jesse LaGreca, a “vocal member of the Occupy Wall Street protests,” and was shot by Kyle Christopher from OccupyWallSt.org‘s media team. The Observer also has a transcript:

The implication here is that Fox News cut the interview, for Greta Van Susteren‘s On The Record, because it contained some sharp criticism of the network. The criticism to which Jenkins replied “Fair enough,” though, is one that Fox chief Roger Ailes also acknowledged in a recent Newsweek profile: that Glenn Beck’s inflammatory rhetoric was a problem (Ailes called it a “branding issue”). Such a (heavily qualified) acknowledgement by Jenkins isn’t all that earth-shattering, in that context.

Perhaps more problematic was the protester’s invocation of a DOJ investigation of News Corp, but not just because it’s a touchy subject. Dropping a mention of something like that, which is difficult to properly contextualize in an unrelated interview, is reasonable grounds to cut it. Similarly, it may be lots of fun to chant “F*ck Fox News!” but that’s also a way to not get on the TV.

Greta Van Susteren tells Mediaite that the choice had more to do with the volume, and relevance, of the footage taken. “Griff Jenkins spent about 3 hours with the protesters,” she told me via email. “The resulting hour of footage was edited down to a 2 minute package about the economic issues that prompted the Occupy Wall Street protests.”

All in all, I’d say this encounter went pretty well for Griff Jenkins, a whole lot better than the first time I met him. At the 2008 Democratic convention in Denver, Jenkins got into a shoving match with another journalist while trying to score an interview with activist Ward Churchill, then was later attacked, along with his crew, by “Recreate ’68” protesters:

    • Let me make one thing clear--I was a liberal before a lot of you were born. This staged and frankly laughable video only gets the message shot down, not propogated. Nice try. @Lisayou, it's people like you who know everything, but will fall for anything.

    • I don't think this is a real Fox News correspondent or a spontaneous interview...the man speaking looks like he's about to burst out laughing. The message needs to be heard, but this is akin to Bigfoot sightings...total bullshit. Isn't the cap and microphone prominently onscreen a little telling? Why are so many people falling for this?

The segment was shot on Wednesday for Greta van Susteren‘s show, (though it looks like the same producer from this O’Reilly segment questioning Michael Moore‘s anti-capitalist agenda) though the decision was made to leave it on the cutting room floor. The reason should be obvious pretty quickly.

The speaker giving Fox News the buisness is Jesse LaGreca, a vocal member of the Occupy Wall Street protests. This video comes courtesy of Kyle Christopher from OccupyWallSt.org‘s media team.

Regardless of whether it is real or not, the words that were spoken were real and the message was true. If we only depend on Fox news to get our message out there then we are doomed.

    • who was that unmasked man!? I loved him. It occurs to me as I sit here, cut off, in the back of beyond, watching this unfold, having heated debates with my 21 daughter about anarcho-communism vs. teabagger anarchy, that I raised her right! I raised a free thinker, who loves her body, is not bigoted, gender biased and willing to learn. Yeah for the old white woman!

    • Oh by the way good post!

As the occupation of Wall Street enters its third week, the New York Observer points out that the notoriously right-wing Fox News has been doing its best to dismiss the protests. Fox has had its producers try to “prank” demonstrators, and the network has aired edited video interview footage to try to mock protesters.

Yet the Observer notes that there was one interview with a protester that Fox failed to air. Last week, a producer from Greta van Susteren’s show interviewed a demonstrator named Jesse LaGreca. LaGreca offered an eloquent defense of the protests and growing economic inequality in the United States, and scolded the Fox staffer for his network’s role as a far-right “propaganda machine.” LaGreca noted Fox’s parent corporation was under investigation by the Department of Justice and that the network was “wasting time” on subjects such as President Obama’s birth certificate and Solyndra.

The Fox producer promised LaGreca he would “put any message you want out there, to give you fair coverage,” yet when the show was aired Wednesday, the footage was nowhere to be found. Watch LaGreca’s interview with Fox:

As the Observer writes, “no news organization is under obligation to air every interview they’ve filmed.” But it raises eyebrows to watch a network that totes itself as “Fair and Balanced” not air an interview with a protester who intelligently defended his cause and criticized the network’s coverage while it continues to take constant potshots at the demonstrators.
