“A number of us are concerned that the president is visiting Solyndra,” California investor and Obama fundraiser Steve Westly wrote to Obama senior adviser Valerie Jarrett in May 2010. “Many of us believe the company’s cost structure will make it difficult for them to survive long term. . . . I just want to help protect the president from anything that could result in negative or unfair press.”
The memo was among several copies of e-mails released Monday morning by Democrats on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which is investigating a government loan to the now-bankrupt company.
Obama’s Energy Department had provided Solyndra with a $535 million government-backed loan in 2009 and wanted to highlight the investment to show taxpayers how their stimulus dollars had been put to work. Westly said that if Obama proceeded with the visit, he should be careful about touting the company’s future.
“If it’s too late to change/postpone the meeting, the president should be careful about unrealistic/optimistic forecasts that could haunt him in the next 18 months if Solyndra hits the wall, files for bankruptcy, etc.”

If $535 million of tax payer money is lost by the Democrats, it is a lot of money. If billions of tax payer money is lost (as in disappeared) in the Iraq war by the conservatives, it is not a lot of money.

Yes, it is a lot of money. And that's why the neocons were voted out. But what we replaced them with decided to keep the Iraq war going and spend even more money.

This is also at JohnA.
So, when Obama spends millions and it successfully bails out an industry that is "too big to fail" then it is thanks to the tax payers because it was their/our money but not thanks to Obama because he made the decision of where to spend that money...
Yet when Obama spends millions and it fails to help start a green energy company it's not the tax payers fault because it was their/our money, but it is Obama's fault because he made the decision of where to spend that money...
That reasoning is not real reasoning. He is either responsible for both or he is not.

it is difficult to give a man who makes so many bad decisions any credit. now while that particular bailout may have helped, had the industry been left to rely on itself and its own inovations to sink or swim they very well could have survived, then again maybe not. businesses fail all the time. bad management is what caused them to suffer. by whose opinion were they too big to fail? this is america, conduct business properly and fairly and make a go. your continued success should not fall on the tax payer. in my opinion it was a bailout of the unions and not the industry itself.

"it is difficult to give a man who makes so many bad decisions any credit."
So, are you saying that it is difficult to give Obama credit for the resulting screwup that was Solyndra?
As far as the auto industries go, yes bad management is what caused them to suffer, and had there not been a bailout then they might have survived or they might have tanked. Had they tanked, the unemployment problems would just be that much worse and it is very likely that a large portion of the tea baggers, as well as other extreme conservatives, would have managed to blame Obama for not giving the auto industry the support it required in it's time of need.
Regarding the bailout being a bailout of the unions rather than the industry, without the industry there are on unions but you can have industry without unions (though industries tend to screw over their employees without unions to protect worker rights). It feels like your claiming that money is sent to a states department of transportation to put up speed limit signs and not to maintain roads. If the roads fall into such disrepair that they are not drivable, then there is no purpose for having a speed limit.

no i dont blame solyndra on obama, it was just bad timing and judgment on his part. i think unions have passed their prime and that obama is in their pockets. i tire of big industry either just getting by or tanking while at the same time using tax payer subsidized bailouts to pay their leaders huge sums. i tire of corruption in its many forms and i tire of liberals who always tend to blame conservatives while almost always giving their own corrupt leadership a pass. i dont think one single political party corners the market on corruption and mismanagement.

Great comment. He did save the car industry. Of coarse all money the government spends is tax money, but only the president and congress decides where to spend. Our government runs on tax money. ALL presidents do this, but yes this is Obama.

actually the advent of the modern electric vehicles production began way before obama. he just signed into law changes the auto industry had already started due to consumer interest and demand. the way business should be run. an interesting note... William Taft (president from 1909-1913): Baker Electric — Taft was the first president to own and drive cars during his presidency. One of the most interesting cars he owned was, ironically enough, "green" — a Baker Electric. This electric vehicle was especially popular with women in the era, as it did not require any cranking and was virtually maintenance-free.

Come on, we all know what was going on with that; it's a money laundering scam, Dumbo gives money to a bunch of contributors, they in turn donate those tax dollars back to him and the DNC. It's the Chicago way. He's pulling the same crap again in MO with another solar company, he'll have a big dollar fund raiser out there and get our money donated back to him to fund his re-election attempt. Until he's removed from office, either by the ballot or in hand cuffs, he's gonna screw us all as much as he can.

To start with calling the president of our country Dumbo is disrespectful, even if you don't like him. You have to have some intelligence to know all presidents plus those running, such as the the republicans running. all have fund raisers for election. Did you forget the SCOTUS made corp. the same as people for donations. Put a republican in office will really get you screwed. So your comment is BS.
