House Republicans voted Thursday to set aside a resolution calling on Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry to apologize for leasing a hunting ranch called “Niggerhead.”
The resolution offered by Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-IL) also called on other Republican presidential candidates to condemn the word, and it asked Perry to name all of the lawmakers and financial supporters who had hunted with him at the ranch.
“If my motion for someone that might stand in front of me as a member of Congress and share with me their vision, potentially, of the United States fails today, it simply suggests that the Congress of the United States is painting over a profound problem that exists in this nation,” Jackson explained. “I personally would be offended that the Congress of the United States would not understand the gravity of this resolution by granting members an opportunity to vote on the specific arguments laid out by The Washington Post for which they have offered their story.”
“Mr. Speaker, nigger is offensive. Niggerhead is offensive. And for a governor of one of the great states of our nation to hunt at Niggerhead ranch, it’s offensive, and I think that I’m expressing the moral outrage of all Americans.”
“A resolution merely asserting the position of the House with regard to an external issue cannot be used as a question of privilege,” the acting Republican chair noted, before ruling that the resolution did not qualify as a question of privilege.
Jackson immediately appealed the ruling, but 230 Republicans (and a single Democrat) voted table to table that appeal.
Herman Cain is the only Republican presidential candidate so far to say that he finds the term “Niggerhead” offensive.

Seriously? What power did this man have over the name of an area where he rented a lodge?
Also, if the N-word is so offense, then why to black people still use it?
Stop using it if it's so offensive. Also, don't just attack one place with the N-word in it's name, ATTACK THEM ALL. Seriously...if it's so offensive, wouldn't you want to change them all (across the US), not just the one that a media-covered politician rented???Common-sense people. Please.
Let's all agree that the N-word is horrid, disrespectful, and distasteful.
And for those places that still have it in the name...let's get those changed.
If you're unwilling to change them all (as they should all equally be offensive), then you have no place knit-picking one in particular. - 8 months ago

Who would name their ranch that, and what are they hunting?
"Mr. Perry, please change the name of you'r ranch, as I find the current name unacceptable. Thank you, regards, the unrasict white guys."

This is a useless symbolic distraction. No party should engage in it.

The GOP is counting on Perry to deliver the white house in 2012. So they aren't about to call any more attention to this issue or anything else for that matter that could possibly cast a shadow on Perry. These aren't adults; they're overgrown adolescents.

I am against Mr. Perry being associated with a piece of property with this name, however, it is up to the American public to condemn him, not Congress.

Mr. Perry is not a member of Congress so they should leave him alone and get back to work fixing the economy and bringing jobs back to America. Just so you know that statement made me laugh also. The worst part about Congressional Democrats doing this is that it could get more votes for Mr. Perry.

It's not so much hypocracy on the Reps part as they will always play to their base and have a pretty good idea that the majority of that base have no problem with this word and probably use it frequently.
