****UPDATE****
Two updates on this story about 94 year old Mrs. Cooper who had a problem with registering to obtain a photo voter ID card...
1) AARP to help raise awareness about voter ID law
Posted: Oct 10, 2011 7:02 AM EDT Updated: Oct 10, 2011 7:03 AM EDThttp://www.wsmv.com/story/15654797/aarp-to-help-raise-awareness-about-voter-id-l...
2) CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -
Ninety-six-year-old Dorothy Cooper has been voting for about as long as she can remember. That's why she was eager to get a photo identification card when she heard it would be required for the next election.
But Cooper was denied the card on Monday at the state driver's license center, according to the Chattanooga Times Free Press. That's because the name on her birth certificate did not match her married name and she did not have her marriage certificate.
Asked about the problem, Hamilton County's administrator of elections recommended Cooper vote with an absentee ballot so she wouldn't have to stand in line with her walker again. Absentee ballots don't require photo ID.
But Cooper said she will miss going to the voting precinct next door to her apartment.

Harwell hits Cooper, Durbin on voter ID commentsNASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - State House Speaker Beth Harwell is hitting back at congressional Democrats who criticized a new Tennessee law requiring a photo ID to vote.
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois joined U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper in his Nashville district on Monday to raise concerns that the photo ID law could hamper ballot access.Harwell, a Nashville Republican, in a statement Tuesday said the two Democrats should focus on pressing federal issues and not "come to Tennessee to trample on states' rights."
The state estimates 126,000 registered voters don't have current driver's licenses with photos on them. But the Secretary of State's office stresses that expired driver's licenses will qualify, as well as a slew of other government issued IDs, ranging from federal Veteran Identification Cards to state handgun carry permits.http://www.wsmv.com/story/15455910/harwell-hits-cooper-durbin-on-voter-id-commen...

Buying votes and bullying the opposition to stay away is now a thing of the past. The GOP has become more sophisticated and it is easier to just pass laws making it illegal for people to vote. I cannot believe that voters have let them get away with this.

The time to stop this kind of legislation was Last election but Many on the left did nothing because of general apathy or because they are just Mad at government in general. There are also Many who would say “Throw ALL the bums out!”, but many of those will still vote to keep someone They like and the Tea Party and Republicans will Always vote to keep one of their own. Ignore that crowd’s call to “Throw ALL the Bums Out!” or you will just be throwing the ones They don’t like out.
We do have several good politicians on the Left such as Barnie Franks, Al Franken, etc… and we need Many more like them. The only way to get anything done in this country is to Get Out and Vote and look what happened in 2010 when apathy on the Left cost us dearly, a Good politician, Alan Grayson was thrown out. :-(
Sadly though it has too often become a choice between the “Lesser of Two Evils” in our elections but I would Much rather have the “Lesser” evil than to Allow the “Greater Evil” to gain power because of my apathy towards government in general.

What should you do when the people that you elect to protect and enforce your rights just totally sit down on the job? I saw this coming way back when Obama first got elected and Republicans took over the states. No fight from Democrats at all. Obama gets elected and sticks his head so far up Republican butts that one has to wonder if the believes that they elected him. Like I said before, with this, acorn, stimulus, tarp, tax cuts, deficit deals Democrats do not want to be elected which is why there is not a big to-do from them regarding this. Let's face it, progressives do not have representation in this administration and we have not had representation in government for decades. Why waste your time!

Let the Republicans win the HOR, Senate AND the White House and we'll have so much time on our hands since the unemployment ranks will fill to overflowing....WITHOUT the beneift of UI. Look what the Republcan governors are doing in their states...they are reducing the time that one would draw UI checks. EVEN though we pay into that "fund" while workers are employed.
And everyone can go on that "diet" they always talk about since food "stamps" (which is a misnomer because it's a debit card) will be either cut back or eliminated altogether. One might as well call what they will be going through a "diet" instead of not being able to eat because of an empty cupboard. We can always look on the bright side in another way since soup kitchens will become a lot more popular, too. We'll be gathering together and can chat with one another as we wait for our little bowls to be filled with bean soup. Nothing like banding together for the
same "cause".However, when someone asks me, "What's the difference" They are all the same!". I ask them to watch this video and then get back to me.
Funny....I NEVER hear back from them.
I wonder why?

"They are not a united party (Democrats)."
On that concept I TOTALLY agree with you. We Dems have been this way since the BIG "flip flop" both Parties underwent back in the 1880s, when the Mugwumps bolted from the United States Republican Party by supporting Democratic candidate Grover Cleveland in the United States presidential election of 1884. They switched parties because they rejected the financial corruption associated with Republican candidate James G. Blaine. - (See Mugwumps -Wikipedia)
And then the Southern Democrats (Dixiecrats) did their switcheroo after WWII, which culminated with them going completely over to the Republican Party when LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act on July 2nd, 1964.
Ever since, the Reublican Party has been taken over by a very strong "conservative" group that viewed Barry Goldwater as unworthy to call himself a Republican. Richard Nixon was the "NEW" Republican version. But since he left Office in shame, Republicans today won't even speak his name out loud! That's why Ronnie Raygun became their modern day Republican Hero.
Whenever the Republican Party gets into deep political trouble and puts the nation into financial ruin, they will pass the White House off onto a Democrat, i.e., Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Mr. Obama, then howl like crazy banshees blaming the Dems for all the maladies, knowing how stupid voters are and how short their memories can be, thereby regaining the "seat of power" for their next fiasco that always puts the country into dire straits. The Dems aren't incompetent. The Republicans just know how to lie. No one is better at it than them. And we believe them! Well, NOT me. That's why I call myself a Bleeding Heart Liberal Socialist Progressive Yellow Dog Democrat. I cover ALL my bases.
Lather, rinse, repeat.

I have watched election after election where Rethugs have total control and totally wreck our economy then turn it over to Democrats who put the pieces back together only to allow rethuggs to get access back through lies. I still remember with pain what the did to Jimmy Carter, which was when i realized I totally hate all rethug politicians and their lying eyes. It only take approx 4 presidential terms for a new generation of voters to come on the scene fresh with ideology taught to them by rethugs in schools, churches and media. They control the airways which allows them to control the minds. This is where the Tea party rethuglicans came from fresh out of Falwell university.

Along with all the other states that have a Republican governor that put these shameful voting registration laws on their state books, though.
Here in Ohio? It's WORSE! We have that SOB John Kasich as our governor. A Lehman Brothers rip-off artist that helped rape so many state union pension funds and made millions from the suffering of fellow Ohioans.
How he became governor is still a mystery....perchance since Diebold is headquartered here that could have had some bearing on it?!

So true, but how do you get people to give a damn about politics when they are hungry & homeless? I once sat on the board of an ASP (Aids Service Provider) and the issue was how to get low income people to take HIV tests to learn their status. The Government money was 75% testing 25% everything else. I had to convince them that people who live below the poverty line give less than a damn about HIV when their daily goal is to find something to eat and a place to live. Bring up the standard of living for people and then they will give a damn about maintaining that standard and vote.

You do realise you answered your own question eloquently, correct?
Survival is paramount ONLY on a "day to day" basis. They can't see that far ahead to understand that what they really need to do is make sound decisions that will affect their lives many years down that "road of life". Most poor people barely see all the way to the end of their own noses!
But this society has been built on the pillars of capitalism that sees human beings as commodities and NOTHING else.
A means by which to make a profit. After all, that's the ONLY purpose of a corporation. It's not to be the moral compass to any country. They fly the flag of profit...not a nation.
Why, that would run contrary to their goal to make money. As the character Gordon Gekko from the movie, "Wall Street" stated, "Greed is good!'

Yes! Apathy is at the crux of the problem. As Pogo said "We have met the enemy and he is us."
Rethugs are just doing what they do. They're amoral, like corporations or crocodiles in a swamp. When you expand the swamp, as we did in 2010, they grow larger, stronger, and expand their territory. The weak and hapless are going to get chewed up.
This expansion has nearly covered our country in the mire and the crocs and corporations are snapping their jaws and lashing their tails about, leaving citizens who can't avoid them bruised, battered and eaten. We must shrink the swamp to where we can keep an eye on the bastards, limiting their ability to prey on those who are unfortunate enough to find themselves wandering too close to their feeding grounds. - 8 months ago

Study: Restrictive Voting Laws Could Affect Five Million Americans - http://www.civilrights.org/archives/2011/10/1248-brennan.html
A new study from the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law finds that as many as five million voters will be adversely affected in the 2012 election by new restrictive state voting laws.
The study looks at 19 laws and two executive actions that were enacted during the last year in 14 states, all of which make it more difficult for citizens to vote. In addition, the report considers the effects of at least 42 bills that are still pending, and an estimated 68 more that were introduced but failed to pass. Such laws include: requirements for government-issued ID’s and proof of citizenship; restrictions on voter registration; reduction of early and absentee voting; and restrictions on the rights of citizens with felony convictions to vote.
"This is the most significant cutback in voting rights in decades. More voters may be affected than the margin of victory in two out of the past three presidential elections," said Michael Waldman, executive director of the Brennan Center.

You got me started on a quest...to compile a list of all the former presidents that didn't have a lot of "jingle" in their pockets when they assumed the Title. Well, what we would call "wealthy".
Old Abe was a successful attorney when he became president.
So far, the ONLY one that was from the ranks of the average income bracket during Modern Times was Harry Truman and when he passed away he didn't have much then, either!
List Of Presidents Of Average Wealth:
1) Harry S. Truman
2) Andrew Johnson
3) Abe Lincoln
4)(I'm working as fast as I can...!)
LOL
}8^)
Andrew Johnson
"According Edward Pessen, The Log Cabin Myth: The Social backgrounds of the Presidents, 82% of US presidents were born into families of privileged upper-middle class status or better. The rest were born raised in middle-class or lower-middle class families. Only one, Andrew Johnson, came from the upper lower class." - Answer(dot)com.Abe Lincoln
Lincoln's father was quite poor at times during Abraham's childhood and was no financial help to Abraham after he became an adult. Lincoln started with nothing as a lawyer, but by the time he ran for president, he was making a very good living and getting some big cases, from the railroads, for example, and collected large fees. - WikipediaHarry S. Truman
He wore glasses as a child and was bullied for it. His mother wanted him to play piano and only when the family could no longer afford them did he stop playing (probably to appease his mother). Due to his poor eyesight, he was prevented from joining in many of the boyhood activities. (Mom would say, "No rough stuff. You might break your glasses."). Because of this, Harry became what some might call a bookworm. In fact, his mother had taught him to read the Bible at age 5. He is said to have read all 3000 books in the Independence (Missouri) Library, including encyclopedias, before he was 15. He went to and graduated from the public school system. Harry practiced two hours a day, usually before school. He became quite accomplished. However, he gave up the lessons in high school, probably because they could no longer afford them, and went to work to help support the family. Although Independence was no place for a young boy who played the piano, it suited his father just fine. John Truman stood about 5'4", and it was known that he would not run from a fight. In fact, it is said, he would fight at the drop of a hat. He was tough.....One time Harry and his father were coming home from an errand when Harry fell off his pony. Although they were about a half mile from home, John told Harry, "A boy who is not able to stay on a pony at a walk should walk himself." Harry walked, crying all the way. Mrs. Truman was not too happy with her husband, but Harry never fell off the horse again. - http://d21c.com/willowbee/page1-childhood.htmlI'm dancing as fast as I can......but it appears I'm hitting a "brick wall". I'll give it another try later...so far, I'm up to three who started out poor.

Maybe because for the first 80 years for one to vote they had to be a man of wealth...a landholder or business proprietor. Everyone knew everyone else. Then after the Civil War things changed for the average white man. Things changed quickly after WWII, again, when blacks pushed for their right to vote. Of course, women fought for their right to vote and won that on August 26, 1920, so they only had to wait 144 years.

“I believe this new requirement is a common sense step that will increase public confidence in our elections,” Secretary of State Tre Hargett said. “Requiring photo IDs will decrease the chances that an eligible voter can be impersonated by someone else at the polls. As a voter, I want to know that my ballot counts just the same – no more, no less – as any other eligible voter. Photo IDs help ensure people aren’t casting more than one ballot – and that those who are ineligible to vote don’t cast ballots at all. For those reasons, photo IDs are one more tool we can use to help combat voter fraud.”
The Tennessee General Assembly approved the photo ID requirement during this year’s legislative session. Sen. Bill Ketron and Rep. Debra Maggart were the prime sponsors of the legislation.Or...maybe....perhaps....look back into ALL those records the Board of Elections possesses in her precinct? There is such a thing.
Or the U.S. Census that is taken every ten years...BUT...if anyone wishes to kniow what that old woman really needed to do to register to vote go to this site and see that all she had to do is sign an "Affidavit of Identity" form provided by the polling place officials and it does not need to be notarized!
http://www.tn.gov/sos/election/qualifcations.htmThis isn't the ONLY problem we will have. Soon, you'll be required to carry "papers" everywhere you go and if you are caught out without them...off to the hoosegow for you until someone can show up with proof that you are who you say you are!

Good thing some of those celebrities who've been married multiple times don't live in the state of Tennessee. Can you imagine having to hire a moving van to carry all your documents to procure a voter ID . . . where are they going to draw the line I wonder.
So the day is gone forever when we can just take a walk down the street without carrying identification with us . . . so sad.

I HATE to say this but Al Sharpton has sensationalized these kinds of stories before and blew them waaay out of proportion time and again. I lived in Tennessee for over 27 years and yes, they are bassackwards on a lot of things, but if you click on the link I posted above that old Lady has so many different ways to get a "Voter ID card" it's pitiful. A utility bill with her name, a SS check showing her name on it. and only about eight other ways to prove who she is.
Sometimes it only takes an IQ of 70 or above to figure these things out.
Al Sharpton's Skeleton Closet
"Al Sharpton is showbiz -- a former boy preacher, turned reckless demagogue, turning (he hopes) into an elder statesman of Black America. He has always loved the limelight and hung out with celebrities such as Mahalia Jackson, James Brown, Michael Jackson and Don King. Say what you want about him, he's certainly entertaining.
He grew up in a prosperous, suburban family (his dad was a landlord and businessman) and was a child prodigy as a preacher. By age 7, he was touring with gospel great Mahalia Jackson and Bishop F.D. Washington, the renowned Pentacostal minister of Brooklyn's Washington Temple Church of God in Christ as "the Wonder Boy Preacher."
Since then he has led numerous publicity grabbing protests following incidents of racial attacks and police brutality (such as the police assault of Haitian immigrant Abner Luoima) and formed a national action network (called "National Action Network") with 20 chapters around the country. In other words, like Pat Buchanan and Jesse Jackson, he is a political figure famous for incendiary talk and not much else."
http://www.realchange.org/sharpton.htmHe loves to be "front and center" too much for me to listen to. He has shown he has his own agendas too many times to count.

Consider the "source" of this story, OlBlue.
That should give one pause.
If there's one thing I know about Tenesseans is they treat "widers 'n orphins" with kindness and respect.
Most are very hospitable! They're world renowned for it! And I'll speak up for them as often as is necessary. Although they don't need anyone to take up for them. They'll "volunteer" it themselves!
Odds are she got confused and most likely didn't understand the requests that the DMV explained to her what she needed to provide proof of residency in her particular voting precinct.

This is a new form of voter suppression that is taking place in thirty four TB/GOP controlled States. It is a revision of the old poll tax that was outlawed back in the sixties. Don't shoot the messenger, here. Al Sharpton isn't the issue, please don't make the story about him, besides Rachel Maddow aired the story also, and she does an excellent job of investigative reporting.

Even Rachel can "drop the ball"...remember, the MSM can jump to conclusions rather quickly and then backpeddle when the WHOLE story is found out.
Google "Tennessee Voter Registration Requirements" and one will learn what it takes to obtain a "Voter ID" card. It's not that it's oppressive or insurmountably difficult. It's just the Rethuglicans know that MOST people are lazy and if one small obstacle is put in their pathway, they will likely give up and not pursue getting the "photo ID".
And do you know what....they're correct!
And if that is all it takes to prevent a person from voting, then perhaps they shouldn't vote!
Sacrifice? Not much, is it? That should build a fire under us working class and poor to get out and VOTE!
There IS no excuse that I can see. It's a small "price" to pay for the right to vote in my book! Think of what our ancestors had to undergo to earn the right to vote! Have we become that shiftless and lazy?
EDIT: If we REALLY care about this issue, then we could VOLUNTEER to get our brothers and sisters to the locations so they can fill out the necessary forms and provide the proper paperwork to get that "voter ID" card. And THEN make sure they have a ride to the polling precincts on election day to cast their ballot!!! And, like here in Ohio, many states have absentee ballots now! How easy does it have to be before people exercise their RIGHT to vote?
Correct?

I don't think that laziness is the issue in this situation. This is a ninety six year old lady that has been voting for over seventy years. She has only missed one presidential election in all of those years, and that was because she moved prior to an election.I read the "Tennessee voter registration requirements" and this lady had more than enough documentation to register.
I don't like to stereotype people by referring to them as shiftless/lazy, because White people use to refer to Blacks by those terms, and it is insulting/unproductive!
Yes, I am currently involved in helping people prepare for the 2012 election.
My family/I have always been extremely passionate about voting, and protecting our rights.
I know that we are on the same side of the issue, I just don't want us to get caught up in pointing fingers when there is so much at state. - 8 months ago

So, I would appreciate it if you cut me a little slack and not critique everything I post as if it's my gospel I ascribe to.

We have to be careful not to give the GOP and the corporate elite any legitimate opening to give evidence that the protests are "MOBS" as they are trying to do. Never damage property or hurt anyone. Make them be the bad guys, that will do more to fuel the protests than anything else. Just look at how much attention the protests got after that goon cop Baloney pepper sprayed those girls.

I agree about the non-violent approach, but since the Elite are the real rulers of this country I see nothing they will change. They are absolutely planning for martial law within the next couple years. Being a military minded individual such as I am, knowing the correct time and targets is a huge advantage. Nothing will change, mark my words, these protests are very cool indeed and if anything people are finally waking up that there are more of us than there are of them. I believe Thomas Jefferson said it best when he said a revolution is needed every 20 years years to keep Democracy strong.

The Justice Department has been ordered to investigate and correct all the violations. But how many can be corrected before the next election in the respective states? Do we need a constitutional amendment to correct this? Would it even pass considering the number of states that have to vote in the affirmative for it to pass? I consider this one of the most important questions facing our democracy. Voting is a right , not a priveledge, and should not be subject to these discriminatory roadblocks.

I agree it used to be mostly in southern states. But in the past year any state with a republican legislature has been pulling these underhanded tricks strickly for partisan advantage. Consider Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania ad infinitum. This is the greatest threat to free elections since Jim Crow laws. Thanks to the Justice Department, the ACLU, the NAACP and the League of Women Voters , at least someone is fighting this outrage.

If you check the list of states that have had their voting registration laws changed in the past year or two you'll see most are in the North. The Democratic voters in the South have been suppressed for a long time already so they're used to it by now.

I still can't get over the massive voter purge of 2000 in South Florida... Or how we didn't have protests over those election results..
IF Gore would've held his ground, yeah it may have gotten bad for a little while, but I'm certain it would have been way better than the last 11 years of HELL...

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?
My memory banks recall it going ALL THE WAY to the SCOTUS.
If you believe in a Big Guy in the Sky, that was the ONLY step Mr. Gore didn't attempt!
But we all know who God talks to...after all, the Rethuglicans remind us all the time!
Funny how different peoples' memories can recall events soooo differently.

Find out who the head of the Veterans organization is in the country and a congress person or senator you trust and voice your complaint. I think you'll get some help especially if it's an election year for them.My dad was a resident at a veterans nursing home. They sent me a bill I knew I had paid when I called and asked for proof, the top financial person told me"you won't be able to understand it"Maybe not but I knew how to contact the head of the veterans adm. in Trenton and actually spoke to him.He took care of my problem immediately. The superintendant at the nursing home called and wanted to meet with me about the situation.I received the red carpet treatment. He told me if I had any other problems please don't call Trenton. He made the smarty, financial guy, apologize they did an audit and found daddys bill was accurate and had a surplus of funds in his savings. No more problems with them.Wish you lots of luck.

Perhaps, pianorama.
But if she would vote for a Democrat or not, she is in the demographic the "radical right wing professional Republican politicians" ("RRWPRP") *believe* would most likely vote for a Democrat. That is precisely why they (the RRWPRP) create these - in my opinion - unconstitutional hoops for certain demographics of voters to jump through. They do it to suppress - again, just my opinion - the votes of people they *fear* may vote against them (the RRWPRP).
And since the courts are mostly owned by the same money who own the RRWPRP, they get away with it.
They've got away with it so far, that is. This may be another of the things about to change as a result of the "Occupy" movement. Although, it may not happen in the next 15 minutes. :-)
