Mitt Romney's Mormon issue returns

A Texas pastor’s inflammatory remarks here — calling Mormonism a “cult” — thrust Mitt Romney’s faith into the center of a 2012 campaign overwhelmingly focused on the economy. It was a transparent attempt by Baptist minister Robert Jeffress, a Rick Perry supporter, to drive a wedge between Romney and evangelical voters.
The attack amounted to a test for Romney, forcing him to respond to a rhetorical assault on his faith that flouted the standard rules of American political debate.
Rather than answering Jeffress directly, Romney came to the summit on Saturday and rebuked another hardline social conservative: Bryan Fischer, a controversial official at the American Family Association who has disparaged Mormonism, as well as homosexuality, Islam and more.
“We should remember that decency and civility are values too,” Romney said Saturday. “One of the speakers who will follow me today has crossed that line, I think. Poisonous language doesn’t advance our cause.”
It was a careful response that allowed Romney to criticize a detractor of his faith without inviting a lengthy public conversation about Mormonism.
The response also hewed close to the role he’s tried to craft for himself in the GOP primary, as the grown-up who will talk to the extreme wings of his party, but not work overtime to appease them.
It’s unclear whether that will be enough to win over many social conservatives, who harbor deep distrust of Romney for his history of changing positions on abortion and gay rights.
But Romney supporters say there’s little point in trying to sway voters who may have ruled out the Republican for his Mormon religion – a group that may or may not be large enough to pose a serious political obstacle to the former Massachusetts governor.
“For social and religious conservatives who really care primarily about values, I think they’ll be very happy with Mitt Romney,” said evangelical public relations executive Mark DeMoss, a Romney supporter. “For those few who are bent on drawing theological boundaries, it’ll be different.”
DeMoss warned that Jeffress was going down a “dangerous path” by trying to stir up religious divisions.
“I would remind fellow evangelicals: Our track record is not spotless in public life. Mark Sanford in South Carolina, John Ensign in Nevada – those were evangelicals,” he said. “Electing an evangelical, I think, has historically proven not to be the answer to all the world’s problems.”
Romney’s attitude is different this time around than it was in his last presidential bid, when he campaigned as an orthodox social conservative and gave a speech at Texas A&M attempting to quiet concerns about his faith.
He’s struggled again to win over Christian conservatives. But fortunately for Romney, there’s not another candidate in the race who has become a Mike Huckabee-style focal point for disaffected evangelicals.
Nor is there a candidate who will make provocative comments about Mormonism, as Huckabee did when he asked The New York Times: “Don’t Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?”

the term "christian" was originally used as a mockery for those who worshiped christ when christ himself, as well as the muslims and jews, specifically believed that there was only "one" god. mormons are an american creation like the seventh day adventist. they are both some of the finest examples of human beings i have met. the mormon church may be far from perfect, but what church is? mitt did the right thing with health care and he even signed gay rights legislation. obama has caved on both issues. i want the military industrial complex and fatherland security 2 dismantled. obama has not shown the balls to do it. maybe we can get mitt to listen to ex byu professor steve jones (mormon), who discovered military grade thermite in ny from 911, and go after the real perpe{traitors} from the bush administration. obama will never do the right thing and i want to give mitt a chance since i have seen him do the right thing before.

who cares what some asshole in texas thinks. and mormonism isn't any more or less a cult than any other organized religion. branch davidians are again, extremists and should be compared to fundamentalist mormons and not the main stream mormons. i look at what he did in mass and i look at what obama has not done and i think i am going to give mitt a shot.

Well, they're right, the Mormon church *is* a weird and twisted cult. They put on a nice public face, but the reality is that they are a shady institution and a twisted religion cooked up by a con-man. Not unlike the Branch Davidians.
Of course, these right-wing Evangelical assholes are just as bad, if not worse. I personally don't care what religion someone is if it's not going to affect their policy decisions. But these morons would throw away a candidate just because their religious preference is different.
It's as if they literally don't believe this is a free country.

I am not a Romney fan but his religion has nothing to do with it. Why can't we stick to policy differences in an election?

It's funny how for non-Republicans they accept the whole Mormon thing it's policy they don't agree with and for Republicans they agree on all policy but his religion is the problem.
Like I told my mom the other day when they were saying "Mormonism is a cult" I was like "All religions are cults to me." lol

I wish that were true. If religion has nothing to do with it then I'd have a chance as an atheist, right?
Not a chance in hell. Overwhelmingly, "Christians" see Mormonism as a cult and not a true religion. So, if you want to read a book that will make anyone think differently about Mormons then read Under the Banner of Heaven by John Krakauer. If that doesn't make a person think about what this sect believes I don't know what would (besides the SouthPark episode).
Personally, I think it would be nice if no one had to have the religion test since we are supposed to have freedom of religion. Nothing could be further from the truth. If one isn't a Christian and have Jesus as your personal savior, you don't have a chance of being elected.
That's true freedom, right?

We had the same thing going on when JFK was elected. His opposition was convinced that he would become the tool of the Vatican. Oddly enough, I was not aware that he was Mormon before I did not favor him for the GOP nomination. I didn't like him in the last election for the position based on his policy history. That has not changed and it has nothing to do with his religion. Everyone has a problem with some, or none, religion regardless of what it may be.

Ok I get that one can be born into Mormonism but at some point in your young life if you have half a brain and any sense you would realize what it is and leave Mormonism by running away screaming hysterically, I mean come on its based on the 14yr old Joe Smith's claims Jesus, God and angels came to him and showed him gold tablets in a cave in NY that were left there by jews that came to America in 2200 B.C. and that is the source for his book of Mormon that the "religion" is based on, these tablets of course dont actually exist anywhere in reality.... How can you take any adult who believes this farcical horse manure seriously.

Having gone through that exact process, I cannot condemn Mormons. Regardless of their early history of how the church was formed and started, what it is today, and how they are is remarkable. In general they are a very peaceful, respectful, humble, educated, and conservative group of Christians. They honestly know more about the bible than most evangelicals and catholics. http://pewforum.org/other-beliefs-and-practices/u-s-religious-knowledge-survey.a...
I think for some it's not about how it got started, but more about the other aspects, such as community, the wisdom and teachings found within the texts, spiritual satisfaction, etc.
If you want to look at ridiculous origin stories, look no further than the bible.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree... - 8 months ago

I agree with your points except that whatever a sect is today still has everything to do with the way it's founded. So, their early history does matter today because it is the basis for everything they do and believe. I'm not saying Mormons are bad, they exhibit all you expressed in your comment but this doesn't make them any less dangerous in the overall scheme of things.Anyone who would believe that a guy looking into a hat is translating the word of an angel and ultimately god is problematic. No less than someone believing in a Zombie Jesus dying for "our sins" either.

That's crap. I've had to deal with Mormons my whole life and the last thing they are is wise, humble or educated.
The vast majority of them are stunningly ignorant, incredibly rude and shockingly xenophobic. There are plenty of Mormons who literally will not speak to you if you aren't Mormon. I wasn't even allowed to go to my own cousin's wedding, and then they were all shitty to us at the reception.
Then there are "public" Mormons, the ones who put on a good face so the rest of them don't look so bad. But the ugly truth is that they *are* a cult, not unlike Scientology, which extorts money and affects policy with all kinds of devious and despicable behavior.
For example, Mormons are forbidden from having alcohol or caffeine or shit like that. But recently, they issued a statement saying it's ok for their followers to drink Coca-Cola now, even though it has caffeine in it. Why? Well because they're invested in the company now, that's why. And that doesn't even scratch the surface of the weird shit that goes on in the Church.
If that's the price one has to pay for "community," it's really not worth it.

it is obvious that your perspective is stunningly ignorant as you could have participated in your cousins wedding had you wanted to sacrifice the same things they did in order to be married in the temple. if it really was a big deal for you all you had to do was follow their rules in order to participate. now in my book, just because you did not does not make you any less of a person. but it is their house their rule thing that most churches have. some are much tougher than others. and we as individuals also have our own standards. i know there are some deplorable mormons just as in other groups. but it has been my experience that there are a lot of good people who go to that church. i don't judge muslims from what others who wish to criticize them want to portray them. i find out for myself what they are like. they mean well but may be misguided as a church. mitt has not made those same mistakes. best example of mormon behavior was after katrina. check it out for yourself. when bush was letting them drown and telling people not to go in, they went in anyway and helped. they were the one of the first groups in there to help. and i am really disappointed that spike lee didn't mention that in his doc.

i think that people who can't seem to distinguish and individual from an organization is extremely ignorant to the point they could be dangerous. and after bush, we may never see someone so dangerous and mentally unbalance. got news for you, idoits who think people who believe in santa and the easter bunny, are not dangerous. people who label and marginalize others for their beliefs are the most dangerous of all. in fact the founding fathers would have thrown morons like you out for being too dangerous. talk issues or talks shit. only assholes do the latter.

ignorant simply means that you don't know. i agree with u that religions fights have caused problems all over the world. very ironic. as a country we were originally created to protect everyones right to practice their own beliefs.
if calling you a moron was a bit harsh. but not any harsher than your characterizing all people who are religious as dangerous. i am leery of the mormon church but look what mitt did in mass. provided universal health care and signing a gay marriage act. i cant stand orrin hatch, but i sure am glad harry reid did what he could to stand up to bush.
and to be honest, i could not possibly care less of whether or not u think i am a good christian cause i am actually a gnostic who is into buddism.
i appreciate the discourse. and i do apologize if my insult did anything more than get your goat a little.
not sure i can vote for obama again unless he addresses the financial fraud issue, and the war criminals who preceded him.
the real question is when faced with the information of who really was behind 911, will mitt do the right thing. i have already seen how obama does not have the courage to go there.
that may be the only thing that can save this county. and if we don't do the right thing, we too will go down like every corrupt empire before us.
