"WASHINGTON -- Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum doubled down on his recent comments opposing allowing gay soldiers to serve in the U.S. military, invoking the image of soldiers showering together to explain his support for reinstating the discriminatory "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

"The problem is that sexual activity with people who you are in close quarters with who happen to be of the same sex is different than being open about your sexuality," Santorum said on "Fox News Sunday."

Fox host Chris Wallace pushed back, asking Santorum if he was suggesting gay soldiers would "go after" their colleagues.

They're in close quarters, they live with people, they obviously shower with people," Santorum said, saying the presence of gay soldiers could have an adverse "effect on retention and recruitment."

(To read the entire article, please click on the link above since there is a video associated with this story showing Santorum giving his reasons why gays are "different" than having "colored" people serving in OUR Armed Services.)

The word "douche" comes to mind when I hear him speak total nonsense like this.

    • Funny, what Santorum says is what I have been hearing from people in the military. My prerequisite for going into combat is will the guy next to me kill the bad guy and take care of the team.

You are aware there USED to be a prerequisite of a level of intelligence to join the military, but since there aren't enough people to fill the ranks necessary in today's military, certain branches had to drop the minimum requirement of needing an IQ of 70 to be eligible for service.

Which explains why there are so many "skinheads" and those that have mercenary personalities permitted to enter the armed forces.

So, they must be the ones that you are carrying on "like-minded" conversations with, is my supposition.

Joe the Plumber has tried his hand at a variety of professions since his launch to fame during the 2008 presidential election.

He’s written a book, traveled to Israel as a war correspondent, delivered motivational speeches and appeared in commercials reminding consumers about the conversion from analog TV to digital.

Now, the former plumber, Samuel “Joe” Wurzelbacher, is running for Congress.

Wurzelbacher filed paperwork last week with the Federal Election Commission, stating his intention to run as a Republican candidate in Ohio’s 9th Congressional District.

Oh great! All we need is ANOTHER idiot like Santorum in a position to make laws that will affecr our way of life!

I am seriously beginning to believe I've gone completely insane since there is absolutely no way that what has been going on in this country and passing off as politiics and those that are popular with many as their choices for Office can actually be reality.

      No way!

You did not make my day Buckeye. Wurzelbacher wants to represent Ohio in Congress. I hope the people in Ohio remember the damage electing a Republican Governor did to our state. As bad as Santorum. Maybe worst.

That's two idiots McCain left us with. Palin and Joe the Plumber. That old fart must have been delusional, and he thought he could beat Obama.

He'd make a good addition to the retardation of republicans! I use the word retarded for what it is originally intended. To describe what I believe is the epitome of the Republican Party.

"Retardation is the act or result of delaying; the extent to which anything is retarded or delayed; that which retards or delays."

EXACTLY how I see the Platform of the Party of NO. Their agenda is to turn back time to a period of regression in societal issues, attitudes of past bigotries, racisms and homophobic tendencies.

      Or...the opposite to PROGRESSION.

      Republicanism = Devolution.

As is the case with your comment posted by thinking Joe the Plumber would be an asset to humanity is ludicrous!

    • It took President Obama 21/2 years to repeal DADT. Now Santorum wants to put it back into effect. He is an idiot. It is against Army regulations to have sexual activity in a barracks, shower, weather your gay or heterosexual. This nut will never be POTUS.

I agree. Waste of money. Anyone that donates to him is throwing it away. He won't be running against Obama. He does have a mental problem about DADT. The GOP is taking us backward.

The trouble is that statements like that fom Santorum only confirm the Google definition of his name to be even more accurate. He acts like it's open season on men in the showers from roving gangs with raging hormones unable to control themselves.

What Rick seems to forget even with gays serving openly in the military that rape is still a crime no matter who it is. So anybody doing something in showers that others find unwarrented is still severly punished.

It's not like it never happened before with heterosexuals either, since women in the military have been raped by men, or is it made more of a pressing problem now that Santorum thinks men are at risk from it too?

"Private Jessica Bleckley complained that Staff Sergeant Nathanael Beach of the 143rd Battalion's Charlie Company had sexually assaulted her. Her protest unleashed a volley of other allegations, mostly involving Staff Sergeant Delmar Simpson, a 12-year Army veteran. According to Army documents, he told a trainee, "If anyone finds out about me having sex with you, I'll kill you." In the wake of such threats, the Army decided to jail Simpson two months ago, pending a court-martial.

Simpson now faces an array of charges, including nine counts of rape involving three women and several counts of forcible sodomy and assault. One female private alleged she was abused by Captain Derrick Robertson,

Simpson's commander in the 143rd's Alpha Company. Robertson, who has been charged with rape and assault, has admitted to a relationship with a recruit, though he denies raping her. And Beach is charged with adultery, threatening a female soldier and fraternization. All three men are married. If court-martialed and convicted, Simpson and Robertson could spend the rest of their life in prison."
