For the main part, I think people are seeing that the way we have been is just a ride & it is time to get off the ride!

"Biglari Holdings Announces Postponement of Special Meeting"
http://www.biglariholdings.com/news.htmPeople with no money is bad for any businesses!!!!
The rich should see that! I am buying less, I go get food out once a month &
here in my town many people are like me, broke till the first of the month, food stamps out. It is bad to see not a lot of sales near the end of the month!!! - 8 months ago

To me it only illustrates the dysfunction of humanity for us to think that we must suck every drop of oil out of the ground before thinking we need to worry about it. Misplaced value propped up by convenience and comfort... willing accomplices to the amnesia we now have as a species as to what is truly important. I have to place these words of wisdom here. I am sad to see how much they have been forgotten, but also happy to know that there are still those in this world who understand their message:
• Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children. We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children.
~ Ancient American Indian Proverb• What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.
~ Crowfoot, Blackfoot warrior and orator• Certain things catch your eye, But pursue only those that capture your heart.
~ old indian saying• When all the trees have been cut down, when all the animals have been hunted, when all the waters are polluted, when all the air is unsafe to breathe, only then will you discover you cannot eat money.
~ Cree Prophecy• Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.
• We are a part of the earth and it is part of us
~ Chief Seattle• I have seen that in any great undertaking it is not enough for a man to depend simply upon himself.
~ Isna-la-wica Teton Sioux• I am tired of talk that comes to nothing. It makes my heart sick when I remember all the good words and all the broken promises. There has been too much talking by men who had no right to talk.
• It does not require many words to speak the truth.

It is the raw & naked greed of people who claim to be Americans yet will do all they can to crush democracy if it interferes in any way with their collection of money and therefore power! Shame! Shame! Shame!

Dear jan , i have yet to find any equal to the wisdom of the first nations . My heart loved them the moment i heard them . I find it difficult to believe people have to be convinced to love the Earth . Media invades our lives to tell us what to think/feel constantly , i guess we are used to it . But the Earth , she IS all around , we eat her for breakfast , lunch and dinner , we breathe her and bathe in her , she is our Great Mother !

I think his 'blackness' makes an additional foil, but Clinton was defamed and impeached! I think it is about power. If they can discourage or place so many road blocks in the way that people give up and don't vote, their Elmer Gantry religious zealots vote and they are in power again!

This was a good video and I like Laura Flanders and the woman she was interviewing had merit to her points. I just didn't understand who she was referring to as the "whackos who are sabotaging the movement." I'm not seeing that because the movement does seem to be growing in support.

It's crazy, an economy that bases its' stability on unbridled consumption and growth, rather than mediated production and sustainability, how can it continue in a world of finites?
I hear people say, all the time, that they work too hard, and perhaps the fact that we have been beguiled into believing that infinite growth is a good thing, explains why we work too hard...well, back when working too hard was still an option for the middle class.

She's absolutely right. We need a paradigm shift....no more of this tweeking of an unsustainable economic policy. We have finite resources and too much debt, yet the powers that be continue to operate in this infinite growth universe. The sooner we shift away from today's economic isms and transition towards a sustainable economic policy, the less painful the transition will be.
But listen very carefully to her words about peak oil. That shit is real, and the failure to adapt to it is going to cause some serious chaos.

Vic_Romano:
The finite amount of oil available has been understood for some time by people who take time to think about it. Yet the oil companies run around like there is no shortage at all. If you want to risk your life big time, try to find out what the Saudis think about how much oil is left in their country. That's their biggest secret, because when the oil runs out, so does their lifestyle of the rich and famous. And they will run like thieves in the night to get away from whats left of that country when they have nothing to trade for food and water. Instant poverty. Sad just thinking about it.

I'm not sure I buy that. The Saudis did fine as nomads and wanderers, long before they began selling oil to industrialized nations, and when/if they run out of oil, I suspect they will return to the lifestyle they once abandoned...it is what people do....called survival, and people who have learned to live in deserts are very good at it.

Just recently they started having to use pumps to get oil in SA. Up till recently it has been free flowing. That also increased the cost per barrel.

David_H:
It's not about "running dry." It's about demand for oil exceeding supply, and the world's inability to meet that demand as "easy" access to oil dries up. There will come a point where our demand for oil will basically run into Malthus' postulates--that's what peak oil is all about.
Look at the oil fields of California and West Texas for example. They only produce a fraction of what they once produced. If Saudi Arabia has plenty of oil, then why have they launched a massive campaign to drill for it offshore? And speaking of offshore drilling, why are we risking our oceans to drill for oil in depths in excess of one mile underwater now?
And don't even get me started on this Canadian oil sands meeting our demands.....I'll just defer to JanforGore on how ecologically devastating that's going to be.
And to affirm what llip was stating, the Saudis fight tooth and nail to keep their oil reserves a secret. They know that by admitting that they're running out, that it would cause a major panic abroad as well as power vacuum in the OPEC nations.
There are plenty of sources available on the subject of peak oil, and I highly recommend them. Check out "The End of Suburbia" as a good jumping off point.

I don't think they know how much is left, they just recently had to start using pumps, it was free flowing, that happened a lot sooner than they had expected.

Incredulous:
But can that many people who have no idea what they are doing survive in that hostile an environment. They did not have nearly as many people as they do today. And they will run out of oil, it's just a matter of when. 100 years ago they thought the forests of the northwest looked like they would never end either.
