People should go peacefully to these branches get in line, and if they want to make a collective statement - do it after everyone has left the building. Making a scene before going in will always get this type of result. I'm not saying that it's right, but it's not impossible to close your accounts.
I personally made a huge stink in a B of A branch over 16 years ago after they allowed some inside scammer to pass bad checks through my account at a location I never frequented, with a check amount that the scammer knew would get through their undisclosed policy of not verifying information when people were only getting up to $100 back from deposits. The proof was on the back of the check in B of A's printing that the scammer used, it showed that no ID was ever required for the transaction. Then they had the nerve to push for everyone to put their thumb-prints on checks when cashing them shortly after that, even though had the banks simply been forced to do their jobs correctly in the first place - there would have been no need for that.
Find a local credit union and give them your business. Mine allows for online bill pay just like the major banks, and I can log into my account anytime I want. I can call them and know that I'm talking to someone who is paying taxes here in the USA just like me. AND there's no $5 monthly charge.

Got a checking account? Transfer your savings into your checking account and write yourself a nice check, leaving only a dollar remaining in the account ( you can withdraw it at an atm window). Then using your check, open a checking account in a smaller bank or the credit union of your choice. I don't know how it works if they're holding your mortgage or if they've extended you a loan, but barring those "shackles", ain't nobody gonna hold MY money hostage if I can help it.

This is nuts! How can a bank tell people they can't take their own money out and close their accounts? Is there a law that allows banks to keep current customers from moving their money to another bank? How is that possible?

I'm fairly certain these people can close their accounts. It's just that the suits at BoA were probably peeing in their pants and were afraid to let all the angry people inside. STILL, they had no right to stop them from doing so.

Wells Fargo nearly put me into bankruptcy in 2000 by wrongly bouncing my checks for a month and a half and of course nailing me for overdraft fees. I was involved in a new business at the time, a newborn baby girl and moving hundreds of miles - and recuperating from the financial hit Wells Fargo caused so I had no time to sue them. Of course, my various credit cards refused to make consideration and refund the late and / or over the limit fees as a result of Wells Fargos criminally negligent conduct and admission of fault. Bankster scum - all of them!
We should get back ALL the ill-gotten gains, in legal terms, the American People need to be made "whole"! Stick that up your arse corrupt Supreme Court Justices!

Deleted it though, got tired of the shit... I swear some of us aren't doing this for ourselves....

BofA also played games with deposits crediting the account on the following day while debiting the account on the preceding day from accounts to give the false appearance of being overdrawn - and for this they of course charged overdraft fees. It happened to me, perhaps more than once even though I was watching my account like a hawk!
It's criminal and the term "banksters" hardly does them justice! If you or I pulled some crap like that we'd be prosecuted and in jail - banks are corporations yet do not go to jail - pretty twisted - thank you corrupt Supreme Court Justices who voted that criminal trick into reality

Holy s**t I had no idea, what a scam! That explains a lot of what happened to me. When they took Fleet Bank over I explained to them that checks from my publisher, though out of state, had been allowed to be the cleared the same day by Fleet, since it was my only source of income and it had been going on for years - the best BOFA would do is clear $100 on the same day and hold the rest for the full 5 working days. They also took the biggest check I wrote or the biggest withdrawal or purchase out of my account first even if it was out of sequence as far as posting to my account and even though I always use the debit option not credit to keep track of my balance it always seemed like I had more in my account than I did. So I assume they held debit purchases somehow to use against me, but I'm not sure how they did it. I took my account to a local bank several years ago and now that bank is slowly getting worse along the same lines as BOFA. They are also gobbling up smaller local banks. At this point I'm not sure what my next move will be. I guess I'll try to find a better player.

It really is time to switch to credit unions. It will take some getting used to - but for most of my life I just took out the cash I needed for the week and let the rest ride. It also keeps your purchases private. And when you see your weekly budget in hand in cash, you're less likely to spend it indiscriminately. When convenience becomes con-venience the hell with it. I'm going to try going back to cash and checks ONLY as much as possible.
I picked up a $65 Kenneth Cole dress shirt for $4.97 and a $120 Woolrich sweater for $6.99 - both never been worn - at Goodwill. That's a savings of over $100. I've always had eclectic tastes so I'm a big fan of second hand and vintage stores. From apparel to appliances, so much great stuff is tossed away it's shocking. Food co-ops also stick it to the man. As long as this consumerist society continues to push trash I'll increasingly become a picker...

I'm no authority on this, but are not bank accounts transferable?
Why not open an account in a different bank and just transfer your assets?
It seems to me that what is being done here is illegal seizing of personal assets, which in my mind is cause for a legal class action suit - which might help bring about B of A's long overdue demise.

what happened is this. some people went to the bank. said i want to close my account. THEN they started protesting. the police were called, and they were arrested for disturbing the peace. there is a woman in the video who was one of the protestors, but also a customer, and she was arrested as well in the sweep. it is UNSURE if she was protesting or not, as she claims not to have been, and simply an innocent bystander caught up in it all. but to frame the situation as if people were arrested for trying to close their accounts is misleading, and when it is shown to be false we will be discredited in all we say in the past and future. it is a popular technique used by counter protesters to cast doubt on the true stories we share
