Iranian plot was an inside job - Pepe Escobar (13.10.2011.)

Vierotchka
A US government informant acting as a member of the Zetas, a drug cartel in Mexico, helped thwart an Iranian plot to assassinate the Saudi Arabian ambassador to the United States on American soil. Now Obama's top national security aides are seeking new international sanctions against Iran. Pepe Escobar, correspondent for the Asia Times, tells us who's to gain from the situation.

    • The US Council on Foreign relations and AIPAC have been looking for the proper excuse to force the US into a war with Iran. This is their so called smoking gun. Its the fear card being played masterfully.

sticking with pure reality, knowing that anything is possible, and we will most likely never know the full truth.

yes this could possibly be israel's hand at work.but most likely isnt.
the united states benefits by looking like the guys who uncovered a plot in advance.
the saudis get political currency by having a move made on them, wich buys them a move to make back.
and iran benefits by stealing jihadi thunder from al-queda, whom they have been in a pissing match with for a little bit now in the theater of regional public opinion.as the jihadi audiance praise the effort as much as wether or not it was successfull.

yes israel could have done it.but these three governments,us,the kingdom, and iran are the only ones who directly benefit.
      israel does not

    • Here's a interesting few lines from a BBC article about this:

"I am not saying that this did not happen but we need to exercise caution at this point," says Professor Scott Lucas, an expert in US-Iranian affairs at Birmingham University.

"We have almost no information about the person named in the complaint. Nor do we have any information about alleged involvement of higher-ups beyond that which was put out by the US authorities."
      Amateur or reckless?

Observers focus on two main questions.

US Attorney General Eric Holder says the alleged conspiracy was "conceived, sponsored and directed from Iran"

Firstly, why would the Quds Force use Mr Arbabsiar as its principal agent for what would have been one of the boldest operations in its history?

Reports say that he has a criminal record in Texas for evading arrest and theft.

"I would be surprised if the Quds Force used such an unreliable asset in its operations given his track record," Prof Lucas.

Secondly, why would the Quds Force believe that a Mexican drug cartel would be prepared to carry out a bomb attack in Washington?

Mexican drug cartels are multi-billion dollar businesses interested in self-preservation. Carrying out a major attack in Washington DC for the relatively small sum of $1.5m would risk bringing the US military on to the cartels' own ground in Mexico.

It may be that the Quds Force is more amateur or reckless in the planning of its operations than previously thought.

But many will want an answer to a simple question: why would this special branch of the Revolutionary Guards seek such a dramatic change in the way that it operates?"
