Well, whoever this guy is, we are not a democracy.
Yes the politicians are bought but are bought because they have abdicated their mandate and are no longer politicians of a limited government but a government of increasing power and reach making the purchase extreamily attractive. I don't agree that we need a Constitutional amendment for this. We DO need to remove the corporate influence on the politicians but, just as important, we need to remove all other influence, unions, PACS, other forms of businesses (LLC), and wealthy individuals. - 7 months ago

I think corporate influence is a good start.
How is the government overreaching again?
Is it that punitive effective tax rate of 17% on the uber rich? Maybe it's those pesky regulations about putting labels on the side of food.

How do you propose to remove corporate, union, PAC, and other origins of monetary influence on politics short of a Constitutional amendment? I have thought on this for more than a year, and have come to the conclusion that a Constitutional amendment is the only method to removing money from politics. If you have another idea, I'm all ears.

Boy my spelling really sucks. My apologies.
A good start but the rest needs to happen concurrently or it will be seen as a strike against corporations and not against influence peddling in Washington. One without the other brings no validity to the table.
Compliance costs on business alone in this country currently are about 100 billion and regulatory costs about 38 billion. Government controls virtually every little bit of our lives. We are locking up farmers because people want to drink raw milk. Obama wants to fine us if we don't purchase health insurance. You can't marry, engage in business, build a barn without government approval. Laugh if you want but I don't see the government as the great protector, anyhow.... The more regulations, the greater the tax code, the more influence the government has over us the greater the target for lobbying for our own interests. A limited government, with most of the things you might be referring to remaining at the state level where the people can control the extent, does not provide the target rich environment for special interests. With all the power consolidated the goal is relatively easy to achieve. Anyhow, I still don't think an amendment is necessary and no, we are not a democracy. - 7 months ago

I'm astonished at how low that figure is. Thanks for the ammo. I can't believe that compliance costs for every piece of productivity in our economy is less than 1% of the economy's productivity!
You mean to tell me that putting labels on food and meeting codes and keeping people safe from everything a large organization (with only profits in mind) could possibly do to hurt the individual consumer costs less than 1%?
What's the problem with compliance costs, again?

We still have election laws. Prohibit the money, period. I got a kick out of McCain/Feingold which was supposed to remove the money influence from politics. Worked well didn't it? Why do we even think that a Constitutional Amendment will solve the problem? Many on the left embrace the concept of a "living, breathing Constitution that changes meaning with the times". What might "money influence" mean when times change? Even though we have a built in term limitation which is also known as elections I would rather see an Amendment limiting terms to two at the most or some other number as long as it is not high. It would be shorter and all encompassing. Finances need to be more transparent. I don't mean Obama transparency but real transparency. Given the amount of bucks involved and the stakes I don't know if we ever will get the money out of politics, given the proclivity of people to gravitate toward dollars. Put the Congress critters in office and watch them very closely. I'm open to suggestions but in spite of being more in favor of a term limiting amendment I would rather start at the bottom than begin by throwing nukes. Actually I think that the fact that this is a problem is a scathing indictment of our elected representatives.

The problem with prohibiting campaign contributions period is a paradox. You cannot pass a federal law to prohibit this problem of bought federal politicians if the politicians themselves are bought! If the law could be passed in the Congress, the law itself would be unnecessary. You have to circumvent the Congress to pass this law. The only vehicle in which to do it and make sure it isn't repealed in the future is an Article V Convention, where the states ratify the amendment, making it law of the land. Unless you have a better idea to get such a law actually passed.
I disagree with a singular focus on monetary transparency because today it is largely transparent, yet that doesn't change the effectiveness of advertising and bought campaigns. You do bring up a good point that the long term viability of such an amendment does depend on language, and that is why there are MANY legal scholars working on the draft language. How do you get Congress to shoot itself in the foot? If someone can figure that out, here's the bullet:
Congressional Reform Act of 20111. No Tenure/No Pension. A Congressperson collects a salary while in
office and receives no pay when they are out of office.
2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security.
All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social
Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social
Security system, and Congress participates with the American people.
It may not be used for any other purpose.
3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.
4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional
pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.
5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in
the same health care system as the American people.
6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.
7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective
1/1/12. The American people did not make this contract with
Congressmen--they made all these contracts for themselves. Serving in
Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned
citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home
and back to work.Feel free to add to this list. I'd like to see campaign finance reform - as in NO public or private funding. All candidates would get equal funding from one pot so that no one person or corp would have a greater influence over others. And, no congress person would be permitted to work for an entity for which they've passed legislation once they leave office (see Billy Tauzin and his new job as a pharma rep!)

I agree Lobbyists are a part of the problem, but once campaign finance is reformed (in the manner Swisher described), and loopholes/revolving doors are closed, Lobbyists would lose their hold on Congress.
Largely why I think lobbying should not be outlawed is because it's in the Constitution, as a method to approach our lawmakers and petition them to pass or not pass certain laws. That availability to the public should remain open, even though it has been morphed and defrauded in its current form.

Sure, you have to reverse the USSC decision on Citizens United. Nothing else will happen without doing that. However, why does he need to read off a piece of paper if it comes from the heart? And shouldn't we be taking these grievances to CONGRESS and making them do the jobs they were elected to do instead of using this to get face time?

Expressing honest opinions is called exercising that "democracy" some are so gung ho about when they can suddenly use it to their advantage to try to up the ratings for their upcoming TV show. When he takes off the Young Turks shirt he was using to advertise that and goes to DC to do it right then maybe I'll believe its sincere. Otherwise, if you don't like the opinions expressed here you can exercise your own option to show it and I will then exercise mine. Isn't "Democracy" wonderful? And I never stated I disagreed with getting corporate money out of politics. I have also been saying that as well as many others for a very long time and voting my conscience regarding that, but it does take much more than a piece of paper to make it a true success. And I will have to check more into reversing Citizens United through a constitutional amendment, which I believe would have to be ratified by those bought and sold politicians...which is the point of mentioning the viscious cycle we are dealing with.

I like this amendment better: it doesn't seek to just get the money out, but change the perception of our planet as well which influences it all to begin with, which is key.

We can sit here and talk about jobs, the economy, and the Wars .. etc. Keep on digging in the devils details just like our friends on the hill. This country was founded on solutions, too many people more interested in the disagreements. If we keep coming up with quick fixes, then we will end up right back where we started. Notice the common denominator in all of our problems is the Monetary Influence that these huge corporations have on the control of this country? Tearing down the entire system would include ripping up the Constitution. I am thinking that it would actually be harder to get a consensus on that, then it would be to lock out Big Money. -- from the cold cold plaza this morning.
