The NYPD announced today that it will "pursue legal action" against demonstrators who injure any of its members, reports the New York Post.
Ed Mullins, president of the NYPD's Sergeant's Benevolent Association, stated that his group will sue any of the Occupy Wall Street protesters who cause harm to any one of its 5,000 members.
"In light of the growing violence attendant to the 'Occupy' movements across the country, particularly as evidenced by the recent events in Oakland, I am compelled to place these so-called 'occupiers' on notice that physical assaults on police officers will not be tolerated," he said
"Assault on a police officer is not only punishable as a felony in the State of New York, but will also be met with swift and certain legal action by the SBA, which will seek monetary damages against any individual who causes injury to a New York City Sergeant," Mullins added in the Post exclusive.

Isn't think kind of stating the obvious? Of course they would pursue criminal and civil charges. Clearly the statement was just released for political posturing purposes.

It is clear, that if unjust harm comes to American citizens peacefully protesting, then just harm may come to the perpetrators if the system fails to provide swift justice.
The police need to get their morals in order.

This announcement is done to show anguish and fear of the protestors. That way he can plead he was frightened into beating the shit out of peaceful 'Occupiers" when he's on trial.

I admire the OWS and their tolerance as I did during the civil rights marches. The dogs attacked them, the hoses knocked them down, the cops looked like they enjoyed beating unarmed peaceful marchers.I plan to send a donation to the young man that was hurt.I couldn't stand that hurt and pain without some repercussions. The police in Philly were exceptionally nice to the OWS.The chief said the police were there to protect them. The mayor visited them like 2am.Some of the residents were complaining but they really aren't harming anyone. Why can't all of the police in the citieswithOWS presence take the same attitude or do they get off beating up on unarmed folk?

Staying peaceful is critical to the success of the movement. Has anyone noticed that the police have the same technology i.e. cameras etc. but you don't see video of the protesters being violent - just "unsubstantiated" accusations on the part of law enforcement.

Maybe he's talking Carpal Tunnel Syndrome cause by swinging those batons, the blow-back of the pepper spray, premature ejaculation of the tear gas canisters or bouncing ricochet of the rubber bullets.
It might even be jock itch from the body armor.
Maybe it's for when his wife refuses sex because he's beating innocent citizens. - 1 month ago

Looks like they've came up with another ploy to scare everybody I guess. But in truth, what kind of injuries do these armored officers have? If bottles or rocks are being thrown you might have bruises or lacerations below the head. They've all got helmets w/face guards & usually neck guards from the back. Unless they come up with some new ordinances about injuries sustained in this kind of encounter I can't see where it's a big deal. Nobody is going to end up with a injury like Mr. Olsen, now are they? After all, the officers are the only ones with guns. Unless we get a martial arts person that breaks somebody's leg. I'd suggest those folks ease off.
This is another very good reason to keep these encampments peaceful.
