WASHINGTON (AP) — An influential medical group's change of heart is boosting President Barack Obama's plan to use Medicare to promote higher quality, less expensive care.

The American Medical Group Association represents premier organizations like the Mayo Clinic, the models for the proposed "accountable care organizations" in Obama's health care overhaul law. The networks of doctors and hospitals will collaborate to keep patients healthier.

Just a few months ago, the group said the administration's initial plan was too complex to work.

But in a letter to Medicare chief Don Berwick released Friday, the group said significant revisions changed the final blueprint for the better, and now it warrants serious consideration.

    • My only concern is what strings may be attached to this promotion or may it be self-promotion. Considering what big Pharma and the Prez did, I am leary.

    • On the surface this looks great. I do wonder what the revisions were that brought this group around. Mayo clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins are all part of this group I believe, and are all dedicated to wellness and outcome based care.

What I meant actually KB is if that particular group made demands as to taking away some of the fluff from the private insurance companies -- just because of the quality of those clinics involved. That group really are outcome centered.

It sure isn't the republicans KB. Obama has a good job's bill that he is taking to the people. If he can get infrastructure through congress, it will put the middle class back to work. We have many roads, bridges that need repaired, replaced. The construction companies will have to buy materials from companies that will put people to work, to keep up with the supply. The republicans voted down the bill, now being broken into pieces. So far they have voted down two parts of the bill. Bernie thinks the infrastructure part of the bill may be up for vote next week. I have little hope the republicans will vote for it. Obama is fighting for the middle class. The republicans are against anything that would help him.

It's called the "I Need to Get Re-elected to Keep These Right Wing Fruitcake Fanatics Out of Office" party. It has a lot of members, especially most of us who have lived through the Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush I and Bush II administrations. Some of us older Progressives remember what true hell is like.

I remember a time when our elected officials would seek Diplomacy, not a No answer... Of course there is much infrastructure work to be done, and I ask... Are Craftsmen and Women willing to work for less??? The GOP looks to do away with a billion dollars of the Davis-Bacon Act... Meaning folks that do this work will have to work for less than the going wage for Craftsmen and Women.......

Obama tried Diplomacy for two years, making some upset with him. I think he finally decided it wouldn't work with republicans. I think that day is over, especially with this president.
As slow as the republicans are at getting bills out they hopefully are voted out before they can cut the Davis-Bacon Act. If not the president has a veto pen. They have pushed him to the point he will use it.

I hope, for your sake, you never have to live through as many crappy Republican administrations as I have and that you can tell your granchildren how you lived throught the most progressive era in American history. At least I'm hoping our legacy to your generation will be a more forward looking country. The next year will tell.

Don't know how progressive it is but it continues to amaze me that the public has such a short attention span and will always blame democrats for just about everything and vote in republicans to make their lots even worse.

      Thank you for your input.
We need Far more people from countries that do have Universal Healthcare to post their opinions to fight against the Lies that the TeaPublicans and FOX news spout about people having to wait months to see a doctor and having to wait for approval before getting emergency care. There are Way too many people in this country that believed their LIES and that is why the original form of Obama’s Healthcare proposal was defeated.
Always like hearing from others around the world about their experiences.

Exactly, Scott-Pert! Living in Canada, we don't have to even think of not seeing a doctor or going to ER for needed treatment. Even with all the System's problems, it's wonderful.

Maybe someday we can be so lucky. What Obama got has some good points like pre-existing conditions but who knows if he's re-elected and has a good congress he may try again. I can at least hope.

I hope so too. Here, we take it for granted; the "newest" additions to our "Plan" in Canada is that new dads (birth dads and adoptive dads) also get a full year of parental leave, with their employment intact, as do moms.
And in "my" Province (BC) they've just instituted a "stop smoking" plan whereby the Medical Plan pays for 3 months treatment (nicotine gum, patches, or prescription) to enable smokers to quit; this is conjunction to an online or telephone type of quit smoking group. it's going to save us all billions of dollars in the long term. (I don't know if they have this in the other provinces, each one has varied rules and regs).

And that type of info from someone who is actually a citizen was missing in the last Healthcare debates. All anyone ever heard was horror story LIES from the TeaPublicans about people waiting Months to see a doctor for Serious illnesses such as Cancer and LIES about the quality of care being Horrible. All I ever heard was; "They all come to the US to see a doctor because it takes Months to get an appointment there and the doctors here are way better." and "The US has the best Healthcare system in the world and if we change it all the doctors will leave to practice in another country." Yes, those of us who advocate change know their LIES but there are Way too many not so intelligent people here who believe the propaganda and with the cuts in education it is only getting worse.

    • Change of heart I see. While the Repuke party in congress wants to kill us all there are doctors who still care about patients and quality care for all.
TO FoosMaster good question to the doctors. there is always one who thinks more about his bottom line than the care of hid patients.
KB1 mountain bike0. Fell of my bike and was luck to only get cuts but that was enough. Head was to thick to crack or dent.

Great news and recognition of the best health care plan out there. I wonder how Faux and "friends" will handle the news or whether they will even bother to mention it? I assume they would not attack the group directly, but I guess they are desperate enough to keep their hands on power that they might! ;-)

    • All the doctors that I have known, which being a 2 time cancer survivor I have known Many, have ALL but one supported Universal Healthcare. The exception was the Brain surgeon that makes many millions each year. I do not begrudge him for his salary, I think he deserves it, but I do think he is just wrong and thinking only of himself. *(Great surgeon, bad personality)
