Nobody has proposed changing the national motto, but the House is set Tuesday to vote on a bill that assure that the phrase “In God We Trust” stays put.
The measure, which is sponsored by Rep. Randy Forbes (R-Va.), would encourage public buildings, schools and government facilities to display the phrase. It declares that “In God We Trust” and sentiments behind it have been an “integral” part of the United States, and “in times of national challenge or tragedy, the people of the United States have turned to God as their source for sustenance, protection, wisdom, strength, and direction.”
The bill “sends a message that 'In God We Trust' is not only written in the halls of our federal buildings, but it is a bedrock upon which our nation is built,” Forbes said in a statement when the measure passed the House Judiciary Committee on a voice vote in March.

Why don't we go back to the original motto? Ben Franklin's "E Pluribus Unum" was something that everyone could identify with whether Buddhist, Muslim, Christian, or atheist.

Yeah, um, the house of reps doesn't want to 'trust in god' when he says "MAKE SOME JOBS FOR MY PEOPLE!" Instead the house of reps just wants to make ultra, ultra, ultra sure that the phrase, "In God we Trust" isn't going anywhere even though it wasn't going anywhere. I've noticed that repubs like to sell Jesus and patriotism like the people who used to sell doves. WALK SOME WALK...... man

I use a great deal of strong and harsh rhetoric. I have called Republicans Republicturds, Taliban, and right wing religious slime. I have advocated that they be rounded up, given a fair trial, and then executed for treason. I say these things because I sincerely believe that they want to destroy our plutocratic democratic society (I am truly sorry that we are mainly governed by the rich. This is why I use the term "plutocratic" See posts by V). In the past several months since these bastards took over this country, they have done everything in their power to destroy women's rights, gay rights, worker rights, voting rights. They are working very hard on this so-called super committee, something none of us voted to have by the way, to destroy Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Sadly, there are Democrats on this committee like John Kerry who have placed these vital programs "On the table". I am not at all surprised by this because, as I stated above, we are governend BY THE 1% who really don't give a damn about the rest of us. In the end, these Republicans HAVE NOT CREATED ONE SINGLE JOB SINCE TAKING POWER! Instead, they are occupied with other issues, including trying to shove religion down all our throats and essentially making this country a theocracy.
I live in Brooklyn's 9th district which used to be held by the flawed but progressive Anthony Weiner. Now thanks to the votes of members of the orthodox Jewish community there (I am Jewish by the way), we now have a right wing turd, Bob Turner in his place, whose last bit of legislation was to dictate what our public schools should teach regarding sex and, of course, nothing about creating jobs. How did this turd win this once progressive seat? Taking advantage of the money now available in elections from corporations thanks to the tainted Supreme Court's ruling on Citizens United (remember corporations are people too), Turner came out with ads proclaiming that his Democratic rival, an orthodox Jew in his own right, voted in favor of New York's Same Sex Marriage Law. The ad in part proclaims that no religious Jew should vote for a person who "violates the Torah". The Democatic candidate did not deny his support for the bill. In fact, the disgusting ad, part of which I have posted here, uses his words against him. Weprin, the Democrat said in part, that he voted for the bill because he is a representative of ALL the people and NOT JUST HIS OWN GROUP. Another fundamentalist religionist, Jimmy Carter was the same way. Similar to Weprin, he respected his own religion but refused to use his beliefs to dertimne how he voted, saying that he strongly supports the notion of separation of church from state. In the end, the homophobic bigotry of these orthodox morons won, and Turner is now the new representative.
Religion has ABSOLUTELY NO PLACE IN OUR SECULAR GOVERMENT. There should not be any mention of god on our money or anywhere. There should not be clergy people anywhere near the congress. The very nature of religion is antethetical to democracy. I for one do not want anyone who can't separate church from state to run for public office or to dictate how I should live my life or what I should think. I don't care what fundamentalist religious views the candidate hold, whether Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, or Buddhist. If they can't separate their religion from their politics, they have no business holding public office. Relgious belief should not be a requirment for public office. Personally I would love to see a Black Atheist Lesbian as president of the USA, but that is only my opinion.
The bottom line of this in god we trust vote reveals the crass hypocrisy of this entire party who cares more for the unborn than they do for the already born.

You are dead on the mark with all your points here. Religions have no place in government and I would challenge any of the right wing to prove that ANY religious texts, and I have studied a number of them, are in any way applicable to a democracy. The only place I see a tie is in the churches that were formed around the various theologies. The church, unlike a religion, is an instrument of control and thus a form of political entity. The founders of this country knew as much, in putting emphasis on the separation of church and state.

Even Ronald Raygun called those who block raisng the debt ceiling traitors. Anyhoiw, traitors get executed. If you think that my opinion makes me a Nazi, that is your opinion. I respect ti, but don't agree with it. Oh by the way, during the early days of the AIDS epidemic, thousands of people died of the disease and Ragun did nothing. Absolutely right!!! All I hear from the Republic-turds is violent rhetoric. I've heard it for years. But if a liberal uses the same kind of rhetoric, they accuse him or her of being violent. For what these right wing pieces of shit want to do to people in this country and to this world, I think they deserve nothing less than a bullet to the brain (they really have no brains). If this sounds far fetched, if things keep going the way they are, I predict we will have a second American Civil War. Check out how these turds are f--king with voting rights. Check out what they are doing with abortion rights, or how in Mississippi they are trying to make a fertalized egg a person. What a bunch of assholes. Everytime I see these pieces of slime on my TV, I am filled with rage. But it is ok to F--k you or your family or other famlies out of their health care and out of their homes. I believe the class war has been going on for years, the last 30 years especially. Again, a Civil war is in the wings. Sad but true. People get upset when I write that the Republic-turds are traitors. Anyone or group who wants to eliminate my civil rights as these turds want to do, take an oath to a lobbyest, that sounds like treason to me. But that is just my opinion. By the way, I do not own any fire arms, but I am afraid those days are coming to an end, and I should learn to use them now to prepare for the fascist religious hordes invading my home in the next civil war.

Yep! If you don't see that, well be careful what you write. I understand my use of rhetoric. I can also see how you would see my use of "rounding up" etc. as a connotation for a Nazi practice. Why did I mention my ethnic group? Because in my initial post, I was critical of orthodox Jews who voted for a right wing homophobic Republic-turd in my district. I did not want anyone thinking that I was anti-Semitic. I thank you for your sentiment and fully understand where you are coming from. I don't think you are stupid or insensitive in anyway. I am not insulted that you think I am using Nazi rhetoric. And I am not trying to insult you. This forum is free speech. If I post something that rubs a person the wrong way, of course they are going to respond. But then, I am going to respond as well. I am not angry about your post because I can't get angry about something that is not true about myself.
I admit that I use violent and harsh words for the turds in the house. I want you to know that I also dispise these Democrats on the so-called super turd commitee that have put Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid on the table. I heard that about 40 Republicans told the super-turd committee to put revenues on the table. If they do that, can cuts to these social contracts be far behind? If the Democrats aggree to these cuts, the turds have won. It has been their life long obsession and goal to destroy these programs. As far as I understand, no one votes for Democrats to go to Washington to vote to cut Social Security.
I can understand why a person would want to see these pieces of crap rounded up, tried, and shot. What's the difference between a rich corporate controlled Republican and a rich corporate controlled Democrat? One sticks it into you behind while the other sticks it into your mouth, AND they don't even give you the pleasure of a reach around. The f--king 1% rule this country, whether Republic-turd or Democrat. Do they really give a shit if someone does not have health care or Social Security? Do they give a shit that thousands were thrown out of their homes and put into the streets? Who did our current president surround himself with? The likes of Tim Geitner? That's like the old saying putting the fox in charge of the hen house. Well people are not as stupid as these pieces of shit politicians think that they are. I predict that there is going to be a major uprising if these rich sonsofbitches are not 1.forced to pay their fair share and 2. punished for destroying our economy in the first place. Can you name any of these banks or companies and the CEOs in charge who were punished for playing with people's lives and their money? Taking the mortgages of unsuspecting homeowners and playing casino games with them? Making tons of money on the destruction of people's retirement accounts? These motherf--kers simply want to bring back the good old days of the Gilded age when there wasn't even such a thing as the middle class.
I would like to see these people hung up in a butcher shop like on Boardwalk Empire and see their f--king throats cut. I want to take every CEO and every politician who supports them and put them on an island someplace and then drop a nuclear bomb on it. I want to see these slime in the street, in the cold, in a harsh damp jail cell. But this is all fantasy. The reality is thanks to our do-nothing plutocratic leaders, none of these pieces of shit were ever punished for their crime. They got the golden parachutes and the rest of us got the golden showers.

How cute..... Seems they've been trusting in their God.... And no matter what most people say their "God" usually tends to be; money, sex, control, or power.....
Idk, certainly believe humans aren't the highest on the intellectual food chain within the universe.... The idea of an omnipotent creator, or maybe just a alien genetic engineer don't seem that far fetched..... Still it is outrageous....
Now we see where house priorities are, serving their lured, to their "God" which is no more a god than a golden calf....

As an atheist I find any mention of "god" as a violation of the separation of church and state but, I know where this nonsense came from when the overwhelming majority were either religious or certainly to afraid to speak up as I do. Different time and place in our history - so I understand.
Now, to the idiocy of this issue: REALLY? WTF?
Don't we (The Country) have better things to do than worry our little heads about how people like me might bring a lawsuit to remove this imaginary friend saying on our money? Yee of so little faith. I guess if it isn't on our money it means that Americans couldn't possibly believe in their imaginary friend.

I do not trust in any god. It is an exclusionary motto that was born out of the anus of cold war propaganda. The original motto was infinitely better. It is all-inclusive by definition and I've been saying it very frequently lately:
E Pluribus Unum!
One out of many.
We are one.
We are all in this together.I guess the elite don't like this motto because sentiments like that make it harder for them to keep us controlled by purposely dividing us among ourselves.
It is also ironic that the phrase "under god" was inserted (in the 1950's) into our pledge of allegiance right before the word "indivisible" since religion is probably the most divisive concept invented by the human species.

I wish we could get Bernie Sanders (a socialist) or Van Jones to run. It has been a long time or almost never that this country has really tried a progressive agenda. I wish I could see it in my life time, but this country is either too right or simply middle of the road (and that middle is to the right as well) in which case, we are never going to see anything get any better. 1. We have to repeal Citizens United. 2. We have to change our republic to a social democracy. 3. We have to demand more progressive candidates and activily support them.4. If we elect a liberal who turns out to be middle or right in his or her agenda, we should impeach him or her for misrepresenting themselves in order to get our votes.

Listen, my friend, look what the Repturds are trying to do in Mississippi, trying to make a fertalized egg a person. We can always solve our problems with these right wing slime by simply never being born. Once we are, however, they want to take away our Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, abortion rights, gay rights, worker rights, environmental rights, and every civil right they can come up with. Simply never be born, and these idiots will back you to the hilt.

Two things are clear with the GOP:
1) Women and children are first, to be thrown under the limo
2) They have nothing to offer in the way of ANY ideas to improve and protect American life. - 7 months ago

Uh, I don't.
I am going to assume that the "we" in the "in God we trust" is meant to be United States citizens. So if I do not trust in God, does that mean that I am not part of the "we," and therefor not part of United States citizens?

I prefer a mystic interpretation , we have all a spark of god in us , therefore , we are all god , therefore , it is US , we shall be trusting in . WE the people .Together .

This is how the Republican Taliban deals with the job's crisis, by not dealing with it. I don't believe in a supreme being, and I certainly do not believe in theirs. Please I beg of you all, vote these turds out of office before they finish the job Bush started.

They only did this because they knew that "In congress we trust" would create an outrage.

I'm just thankful they have "In God We Trust" Instead of In Jesus, or Allah, or Buddha, Krishna, etc, etc. Many cultures believe in a supreme being of some sort. The term God is not a name, but a general description. I just feel sorry for the atheists. This is just going to piss them off.
Kind of silly when you think about it. The reference to a deity, which they don't believe in, makes them angry. Almost seems ironic, in that since they don't believe in the deity anyways it shouldn't make them mad, or from another perspective if that deity wanted to annoy them it would probably do it in such an ironic way.

Then why not FSM or the Tooth Fairy?
Seriously, as an atheist, I find the whole thing offensive and reprehensible, especially in light of the basic tenant of separation of church and state in our Constitution. I will no longer cite the Pledge of Allegiance until the recently added "under god" is removed.

If you are an atheist, what do you care? I am an atheist, I could give a shit less. To tell the truth, the whole don't murder don't steal thing is kind of appealing.

It's not like they invented it, but they did invent shit like you getting out to death for working on sunday or having to marry your rapist and women can't talk in the presence of men and a bunch of other ridiculous shit.
I'm an atheist too. I don't know that it pisses me off, it's too minor to be pissed off about, but it is wrong and unconstitutional.
Freedom of religion, except the national motto says fuck you if you aren't Christian.
