11-11-11 is not a variant of Herman Cain’s much-touted 9-9-9 tax plan, but rather the date of this year’s Veterans Day. This is especially relevant, as the U.S. has now entered its second decade of war in Afghanistan, the longest war in the nation’s history. U.S. veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are appearing more and more on the front lines—the front lines of the Occupy Wall Street protests, that is.
Iraq War veteran Scott Olsen, 24, lies bleeding in Oakland, Calif., after being struck by a projectile apparently fired by police. (AP / Jay Finneburgh)
Video from the Occupy Oakland march on Tuesday, Oct. 25, looks and sounds like a war zone. The sound of gunfire is nearly constant in the video. Tear-gas projectiles were being fired into the crowd when the cry of “Medic!” rang out. Civilians raced toward a fallen protester lying on his back on the pavement, mere steps from a throng of black-clad police in full riot gear, pointing guns as the civilians attempted to administer first aid.
The fallen protester was Scott Olsen, a 24-year-old former U.S. Marine who had served two tours of duty in Iraq. The publicly available video shows Olsen standing calmly alongside a Navy veteran holding an upraised Veterans for Peace flag. Olsen was wearing a desert camouflage jacket and sun hat, and his Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) T-shirt. He was hit in the head by a police projectile, most likely a tear-gas canister, suffering a fractured skull. As the small group of people gathered around him to help, a police officer lobbed a flashbang grenade directly into the huddle, and it exploded.
Four or five people lifted Olsen and raced with him away from the police line. At the hospital, he was put into an induced coma to relieve brain swelling. He is now conscious but unable to speak. He communicates using a notepad.
I interviewed one of Olsen’s friends, Aaron Hinde, also an Iraq War veteran. He was at Occupy San Francisco when he started getting a series of frenzied tweets about a vet down in Oakland. Hinde raced to the hospital to see his friend. He later told me a little about him: “Scott came to San Francisco about three months ago from Wisconsin, where he actually participated in the holding of the State Capitol over there. Scott’s probably one of the warmest, kindest guys I know. He’s just one of those people who always has a smile on his face and never has anything negative to say. ... And he believed in the Occupy movement, because it’s very obvious what’s happening in this country, especially to us veterans. We’ve had our eyes opened by serving and going to war overseas. So, there’s a small contingency of us out here, and we’re all very motivated and dedicated."
A group calling itself Veterans of the 99 Percent has formed, and with the New York City Chapter of IVAW set Nov. 2 as the day to march to Liberty Plaza to formally join and support the movement. Their announcement read: “‘Veterans of the 99 Percent’ hope to draw attention to the ways veterans have been impacted by the economic and social issues raised by Occupy Wall Street. They hope to help make veterans’ and service members’ participation in this movement more visible and deliberate.”
When I stopped by Occupy Louisville in Kentucky last weekend, the first two people I met there were veterans. One of them, Gary James Johnson, told me: “I served in Iraq for about a year and a half. I joined the military because I thought it was my obligation to help protect this country. ... And right here, right now, this is another way I can help.”
Pundits predict the cold weather will crush the Occupy movement. Ask any veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq about surviving outdoors in extreme weather. And consider the sign at Liberty Plaza, held by yet another veteran: “2nd time I’ve fought for my country. 1st time I’ve known my enemy.”
From Kennymotown:
Get this straight you 1%ers, you can run but you can not hide! We the people have so many grievances I can not name them all, but I can most whole hardily assure you the game is over. Your Corporatist Republicans, and Democrats who currently sit in OUR House and Senate will not be able to hold things together for YOU! A whole Year has been wasted in Government because of the Republican Leadership wants Obama and the COUNTRY to fail. What the HELL is wrong with that backward thinking? You actually HATE America and Americans that bad? As you can see the Veterans who have been fighting your Capitalist Pigs agenda have even woke up, they are joining our movement faster than you can change your address! Wake up before you find your head in a basket.....

Great post Kenny. I agree wholeheartedly. The pigs are a nazi
wolf pack. They've shown their true colors many times. When
they start attacking ex servicemen, they're realy playing with fire.
I've never met a cop I could trust to be a law abiding citizen, and
I'm absolutely certain I never will. When I reestablish my Western
homes in New Mexico & Colorado I plan to own, bear, and target
practice with a Henry every day. ( with ear protection, of course )
The pigs have always considered me a target for their Felonies.

They will either meet our demands or prepare for a war of attrition... We are the cogs of war that will end their economic windfall.
And when we pull the carpet out from under them, because we grow the food, make the goods, hold the keys to the stores, and control the ports where goods come in, then we will devalue their money and cut them off from our new society.

It really needs to be identified more clearly who the 1% really are. Many physicians fall into the top 1% income-wise but our we against them? And what about massively popular figures (musicians, actors, and public figures such as Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, etcetera) who take home millions? To me, saying "1%" isn't definite enough. Who are we really fighting against? I love that Americans are actually taking action, and I support the main cause of getting business out of government and giving it back to the people, but simply saying "the top 1%" doesn't get that message across effectively.

if it don't apply don't reply.....you are right many earned their money with talent hard work and doctors? not any I have ever met were millionaires. the 1% are those who only got their money by skimming off the transactions and labor of others. they produce nothing, make nothing, and hate this country while they dress themselves in the flag. Wal Mart tops the list of wealthy who earn it on low wages around the world, with cheap goods and cornering resources. All the oil companies execs, who rape the planet and tell us they do it for us, when they have stopped every attempt to convert to clean energy. They had to be forced to clean up gasoline as far as it goes. The big banking houses. JP Morgan Chase tops the list. Military contractors. Halliburton. And these same scions of society tell the rest of us to go screw ourselves when we ask them to pay a little forward. They think they have already. As they take more and more and more. Something in our Pilgrim roots is rising up against this rapaciousness. Wal Mart could triple all its workers wages world wide and give them all health care gratis and still be the riches corporation in the world.

Your welcome, I've drawn in some interesting comments and observers with this one. I and millions more are really getting tired of the games being played by people in elected positions when they should be devoting all of their time to constructive legislation that would really help people struggling. I don't know what will really wake these people up, who run the show. Hell maybe thats what they are waiting for, the've got us by the balls with all the anti-patriot legislation currently in place and this twisted political system is not working. I totally blame the right wing hate machine for wasting 3 years of real progress that should have taken place. I am a rabble rouser that really cares about this country and many of my fellow Veterans are just like me. I'm being monitored very closely and the spyware takes pictures of every comment and article I post. I hope the monitors feel for their fellow citizens, or many of us rabble rouser will be incarcerated. Its very easy too see the Elite are getting nervous, and we have that faze to get through. Big brother is watching and we all need to know that, hell it's been going on for so long now I don't think the internet will be on for too much longer. Occupy Oakland is calling for no work and no school on November 2 as part of the general strike. We are asking that all workers go on strike, call in sick, take a vacation day or simply walk off the job with their co-workers. We are also asking that all students walk out of school and join workers and community members in downtown Oakland. All banks and large corporations must close down for the day or demonstrators will march on them.
We're staying tuned to a number of information streams, and are expecting some excellent citizen journalism
1:26 PM PT: PROTESTERS SHUT DOWN BANK OF AMERICA.
The building is completely barricaded by protesters now.2:00 PM PT: Many banks shut down in anticipation of the marchers. At this point, most of the major banks in downtown Oakland have been shut down.

Hello Kenny.
The following is a quote from a response you made further down this thread."... and I'm not going to take it much longer!"
I have been observing this site for quite some time now.(and many many others)
Your statement has piqued my curiosity and as a result i was forced to make an acct. in order to glean info. What exactly do you mean and what will happen when you can not take it anymore?
Please be realistic and concise.Do not worry. I am not a secret operative with the government. Just a person who reads forums to try and grasp the pulse of the nation. The internet is a great tool which allows instant nation wide feedback.
All forums are either uber-conservative or uber-liberal as this one is.That is not a bad thing.I am preparing a thesis on internet forums and the quasi societies they form and how these affect a persons' grasp on reality and would appreciate any feedback.
This is a two party nation and that very fact will,in the end,be its downfall because of all of the constant and now vicious partisan rhetoric.
thank you very much for your participation.

Sorry to take so long to get back too you, I work graveyard and have been sleeping. Nice to see you join the site, I can't really say where this is all going but as you can tell a lot of people are pissed off at the current state of affairs. I would have to say the Government is ours and we need some very big changes, hell the government is now doing what your doing monitoring social networks like current and facebook etc, etc. I'm a pretty level headed person and if I'm fuming, I can't imagine there isn't several million more kennymotowns out there. The article is a wake up call to our overlords, Veterans are pissed and the Elite should realize they are fucking with the wrong people! It's called for the people by the people, and our government should be back in the hands of the people.
Now if those running the show can't figure that out, then we shall see if our government represents the people or the Corporations. Good luck finding answers for your thesis, the sub levels of society are very interesting at this point in time. If I were you, I would gather as much info about the social networks before the internet is shut down. - 7 months ago

Republicans in congress are trying to keep the democrats from destroying the country. They want the country to succeed but, and rightly so, do not want Obama to succeed. Big difference. If Obama fails the country will not. Their measures are met with derision from the white house and Reid. Obamas policies are not the answer for this country. Socialism is not the answer for this country. The hatred of this country comes from the people trying to destroy our freedom, confiscate the product of our labor and destroy capitalism. Those are the enemies of this country, they are the purveyors of slavery, slavery to the state. There is not better remedy than the free and open exchange of goods and services, THAT is capitalism. Control is not.

In theory ALL economic systems should work. Unfortunately, once people get injected into any economic system, it loses it's ideological purity. The capitalism/free market system that is in effect today has NOTHING to do with the concept of a free market as envisioned by Adam Smith. It is, in effect, a corporate oligarchy i.e. a system controlled by a tiny percentage of people whose primary goal is to enrich themselves and to hell with everyone else. So I'm not arguing that true capitalism is necessarily a bad thing, but what is recognized today as "capitalism" because it's "capitalism" in name only.
That said even the purest form of capitalism is unrealistic because it relies on infinite growth which isn't possible on a planet with finite resources and a exploding population. If you happen to have some ideas on how to prevent people from corrupting our economic system, I'm certain everyone here would like to hear it. Similarly if you have any ideas how to grow infinitely on a planet with finite resources, we'd like to hear that too.

Much like a republic which only works with people of personal responsibility . Government, and systems, are made up of people and since there are no perfect people there are no perfect systems. People are the wild card. Regardless of how much the government controls the economic environment it will still not be perfect. We have laws against fraud and other criminal behavior. Prosecute the violators of them. Let the free exchange of money and good go forward. Jesse LaGreca states it very well about how the violence from the police must stop
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/11/02/1032465/-UPDATE:-Port-of-Oakland-SHUT-D...
Some of the 1% actually do believe the myth that "they got to be successful on their own and deserve ALL the privileges from it" but OccupyOakland is showing an example of why that is only a delusion with a general strike that proves no one gets rich on their own and depends on many people to work together for anyone to become successful because all have contributed to bear the fruits of their labor.
When a lot of people go on stike, where does the success go? It evaporates since the privileges of the 1% depend on the labor of the 99%
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/11/01/1032342/-Join-us-tomorrow-in-Oakland,-o...?
"The most important aspect of Occupy Wall Street is that everyday people are taking direct action to say that our economic and political system has failed. And it has.
Workers are striking. Community activists are confronting corporate meetings. And people in Oakland responded to police brutality on our streets by coming out in twice the numbers and voting for a general strike.
And that's why it's so important, if you are in the Bay Area, to find a way to come to Occupy Oakland tomorrow. For the 9am rally, or the Noon rally, or the 5pm rally and barbeque. Or come join us at 4pm or 5pm and march to the Port of Oakland in solidarity with dock workers on the West Coast.
The point is simple. This can't wait. Occupy is happening because people are fed up.
When we take action together to demand economic justice, the world listens. The powerful have to reconsider their plans"

1% depend on the infrastructure we all pay for. Plus they use it much, much more proportionately. Doesn't that mean they should pay much much more taxes, proportionately?
I don't think a top tax rate of 99% would be unfair for the top .01%

Awesome post, have you guys seen some of these military people saying "I'm too busy defending your freedom to occupy wall street." Its sad that some vets are not getting the message. We all support the troops cause we want all of our forces home and the complete destruction of the military industrial complex. We are the 99 %.

In the 60's and 70's when we protested the war in Vietnam we faced the same blue shirt storm troopers. Then Kent State happened and 5 died for no good reason. This time the players are different but the blue shirt storm troopers are much more armed with so called non lethal weapons and even more willing to use them. These storm troopers are trained by ex military hired by companies that pay big money to protect the rich bitches in America.
I support #OWS and will until we get our country back. Fight every Repuke in office no mater which office they hold. Make your vote count and as far as someone telling you that my vote don't count remind them no shake them up by telling them to look around you and see the mess they made and blamed it on the Democrats. Tell someone that their head will not explode if they don't just watch fixed noise that there is other means to get information, true information not information that is made up for money and the rich. Are you rich? Will you be rich? When will you be rich? These are the questions to ask a brain washed, brain dead Republican follower, and when you get an answer if you get one then hit them with this especially if they say not yet to will you ever be rich and when you will be rich
How come you're not rich already? Then laugh at them and walk away.

My thoughts are the following---this country and it's people have come to the breaking point. We are tired of the hopelessness, the lack of jobs or being under-employed (like my husband is), the lack of healthcare or being under-insured(again, like my husband and I and many others are), our crumbling infrastructure, these pointless, stupid and costly wars, all the ridiculous and stupid things our government and yes, our president included, do or not do-----(like not having a jobs bill but can continue funding these wars and giving tax breaks to the 1%) Both parties are guilty of being corporate whores and not giving a damn about the American people. There really is no mystery why this Occupy Movement is taking place with people from all walks of life. As for violence? Well, it seems to me the people are protesting peacefully...we are not bringing guns like the tea party. But what I do see is the protesters having violence being done to them by the cops for no good reason. One thing I want to get through to the protesters....THE COPS ARE NOT ON YOUR SIDE AND NEVER WILL BE! They work for the government and Wall Street. Ever since Homeland Security has been put in place, they have become even more brutal and they see everything as a threat...especially this because the people are rising up and that is the last thing our government wants. I hope everyone in Oakland will be OK and unharmed during the general strike they are having today. My thoughts are with them. This Occupy Movement is the only way the Vets and all people will be heard and seen. I'm not for violence either, but it seems to me that the powers that be are pushing us in that direction. As with any Revolution or overthrowing of a government, sadly violence is part of it. I will end with this---This country as I knew it is gone and lost forever. That is the saddest thing of all.

The wars have taken a toll on a generation of people.
Because America did not choose to use the draft most people in this country have not been affected!
Our returning veterans have every right to have their voices heard as well as OWS protesters. We the people have been pushed to the brink and are now standing up and saying NO MORE!
I do not know if real change can happen across this nation with or with out violence.
I would love it if the powers that be would do the right thing for all the people but it is not happening.
The system is set up in such a way that the 1% always gets what they want, even if that means people die! What are we to do?

Very well said! We must all try to make sure this revolution stays non-violent, but sometimes I think these Elite only understand violence. So whats next? Who knows, but Violence keeps on getting perpetrated on us. I ain't going to stand around waiting for peace to fix everything like the Jews in Germany. That is not a stretch for anyone to imagine. Warsaw ghetto only needed a Ghandi to fix it all, we are dealing with Fascists can't people see this!

When the most lucrative business in town is war, war profiteers make the most money and have the most influence in a pay to play government, thus the policy of war continues ad nauseum.
