(CBS News) Andy Rooney, the "60 Minutes" commentator known to generations for his wry, humorous and contentious television essays - a unique genre he is credited with inventing - died Friday night in a hospital in New York City of complications following minor surgery. He was 92, and had homes in New York City, Rensselaerville, N.Y. and Rowayton, Conn.

Rest in peace, Mr. Rooney.

    • I almost never agreed with Andy Rooney, but he always made excellent points pertinent to his topic of the week. He made great contributions to his profession, from the days when he wrote a daily piece for the troops during wartime.
A good long run, Andy. May you rest peacefully.

    • 92 is as good a run as anyone should get. We should all be so lucky to do what we love until 1 month before our death in reasonably good health.

    • I grew up watching 60 minutes. Initially, I was encouraged by my mother, however it wasn't long before I was looking forward to watching the show, every Sunday.
Andy Rooney was one of my favorites on the show! May you rest in peace, Andy.. You will be dearly missed......

    • He lived a full life, and while it is sad to see him go his journey is now complete on this Earth. I hope he finds a place where there is no longer anything to complain about... Rest In Peace.

    • A stand-out commentator - different from others during his heyday and different from what we have now. I enjoyed all his 60 min. broadcasts. Condolences to his family. Rest in Peace, Andy. You'll be missed.

    • I'll miss him and his wit. He said what a lot of us thought and was one of the real American journalist who reported news and not fabricated fallicies.

    • Very Sad news, the end of a living American Icon... I know I will miss Andy, I sometimes just watched the end of 60 Minutes to see what was on his mind...

Rest in Peace Andy Rooney and best wishes to his family and friends....

    • He outlived my potential... I'm somehow not saddened by this....

Nope far more saddened by recent innocent children blown to pieces as a part of someones drone offensive...

Far more saddened by brain-washed young people who still go off to war to "defend their country" just to come back; crippled (emotionally or physically), or in those nice flag draped coffins...
