Obama: Americans Have Been 'A Little Bit Lazy' Over The Past Few Decades

I think it’s important to remember that the United States is still the largest recipient of foreign investment in the world. And there are a lot of things that make foreign investors see the U.S. as a great opportunity -- our stability, our openness, our innovative free market culture.

But we’ve been a little bit lazy, I think, over the last couple of decades. We’ve kind of taken for granted -- well, people will want to come here and we aren’t out there hungry, selling America and trying to attract new business into America. And so one of things that my administration has done is set up something called SelectUSA that organizes all the government agencies to work with state and local governments where they’re seeking assistance from us, to go out there and make it easier for foreign investors to build a plant in the United States and put outstanding U.S. workers back to work in the United States of America.

President Barack Obama said America has "been a bit lazy" over the past few decades at attracting international business.

"But we’ve been a little bit lazy, I think, over the last couple of decades," he said at CEO summit at the APEC meeting in Hawai'i. "We’ve kind of taken for granted — well, people will want to come here and we aren’t out there hungry, selling America and trying to attract new business into America."

Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who was participating in a CEO summit at the conference, told reporters he would not use the term lazy — but said the trend Obama was pointing to is hardly new.

The White House says Obama was not criticizing the country — just isolating a problem that he intends to correct.

But Republicans are jumping on the remark — with Gail Gitcho, GOP front-runner Mitt Romney's communications director, saying it's the White House that's been lazy.

"President Obama continues to blame Americans for his own mishandling of the economy. Most recently, he has called us ‘lazy,’ and has previously said ‘we lost our ambition’ and we are ‘soft.’ The American people are not lazy, Mr. President – but this White House has been lazy and soft, unable to do anything to turn the economy around."

      Love how you "cherry-picked" the CIA story and almost put it exactly in the place of where this one was..... classic...

      Yeah well at least there was that one point in time where I could almost afford to feed myself (though practically nothing else) making almost $10,000 a year.....

      While inflation is INSANE... And further devaluing my less than meager wages....

      Right and pay no attention to whichever politician is taking my tax-dollar to fund a war... Pay no attention to that fact that I can't afford proper dental care, much less adequate medical treatment... And why?

      Oh because that piece of shit politician is taking kick-backs from multi-national corporation just to keep me at the "slave-class" levels....

      I mean great, yeah that's cool, forget I couldn't even afford a damn car to last me more than six months, couldn't afford a regular cab to work, and had to beg, borrow and almost steal to even survive...

      Fuck it, we've got more brown skinned people to bomb, more prisons to build for no-violent drug offenders, more "austerity" bills for the ruling "elite" written by lobbyists that work for the fucking corporations, not the government....

      Just to have some lazy, privileged, ass-hat, "community-organizer" tell me I'm "lazy"....

      Fuck that, and ANYONE who thinks that's okay, or people like me are just bitching...

      If you saw the medical histories, the dental histories, the work histories, and the people we've had the misfortune to be "employed" by you'd STFU, and have to admit.... I and MANY others are/were treated like a disposable slave class.....

      Just to here someone 35 or older, bitch about how lazy I am, when their net worth, health, all of it is MANY times better than the younger generations....

      Really appreciate that you matured before everything went to utter hell, and realize it's not the same world, and the younger generations in many cases have been completely and utterly fuct over....

      I was referring to the final paragraph of the article, the one in which the GOP candidates take Obama's statement completely out of context and spin it into talking points.

    • Damn..... It didn't take me more than 2 decades to find that most people operating businesses didn't want to pay well.... If a migrant, or illegal immigrant worker would offer to work for just a dollar or so less, I was out of a job... And I could only get back breaking work, little more than minimum wage, no benefits, and in fact work related injuries early on, not because I was all that stupid or lazy... (maybe a little ignorant and unaware, but not lazy, and certainly only treated a little better than a "slave"... While my employer reaped nice rewards from my efforts...)

      If I couldn't afford to go to college and lived in such poverty as to barely be able to have basic needs met (through no fault of my own), it was just "tough shit"....

      Lazy?..... Look at the economic history.... In the 70's factory jobs in northern parts of the country started off floor sweepers at $10 an hour.... FACT....

      Inflation wasn't near what it was when I entered the work force....

      Lazy? No Mr. President, you're a liar.... Once again, and oversimplifying if not completely misrepresenting the reality of the situation...
