    • If an elite class wishes to exist, it must know how much it can take. It can take mostly everything, but not absolutely everything. It must know how to keep the people ignorant and happy enough for their propaganda to be swallow-able. This current generation of elites upset this balance. They took too much. They took away the illusion of a happy and satisfying life from the people. The elite were too greedy and power hungry. Collectively, the elite are the bully who punched the arm of the little guy one too many times. Now it's the little guy's turn.

    • God, I hope so.
Events do move minds and prompt behavior.
I must publicly and embarrassingly confess here that as recently as a year ago I somehow had bought the PR image of Michael Bloomberg as the one rational exception to the Rethuglican panoply of evil.
He'd built a non-partisan business media empire that, as far as one could see, was dependable for accuracy, and, as Mayor of New York, seemed concerned about reducing car traffic in Manhattan, among other things.
I guess in the end it really doesn't, and can't, work that way.
Massive concentration of wealth creates its own unique gravity field.
Reality, (and the more ephemeral concept like human rights) is far more easily distorted by perceived personal interest than light is bent by gravity.

Given the control of the massive amount of resources on the side of stasis, I'm still not optimistic, but at the very least we the lines are drawn more clearly now.

It will be an absorbing struggle: money vs. numbers.
Let's do all we can to equalize the equation.

    • This was incredible writing. I have actually been holding back, not daring to think that this actually could be the time in history when we would finally achieve that more perfect union our forefathers envisioned. That we could actually bring about with our voices and hands a better world. I am daring now. Bloomberg does not realize what his actions have done. How he has inspired more to see the facade that is now cracking. Thanks for posting this.

    • As usual Chris Hedges is on the mark. He never fails to hit the nail on the head: "The second stage, the one we have entered now, is the unsuccessful attempt by the power elite to quell the unrest and discontent through physical acts of repression." I want to believe that, it pained me to see the way the city garbage workers (thugs) dismantled the park and disrespectfully tossed all of our fellow human beings possessions into a trash heap. My sense of goodness is being hammered. Peaceful protestors, standing up for us all and we have to witness them being hammered like this. Chris is right in so much of what he says, his voice helps me, it lifts OWS up and gives me and others hope. This OWS is the change I believe in. This is action, this is real, not those mini paid for tv spin spots we get from the political lackeys. The real heros of OWS they give me real HOPE! Thanks for posting this!

"But the longer you held on, the more the crowd in the club turned in your favor. No one, even you, thought you could win. But then, every once in a while, the ringer would get overconfident. He would get careless. He would become a victim of his own hubris. And you would find deep within yourself some new burst of energy, some untapped strength and, with the fury of the dispossessed, bring him down." Chris Hedges on OWS

They are nothing without US . They are nothing now , masquerading as people of importance . A man can believe he is King , but , unless everyone ELSE goes along too , he is no King . Just a delusional person .
