A simple story of humanity

jmarkred
A friend of mine who has just been laid off helped another poor guy who is in even worse shape, even as I whined about how bad we have it.

We need to help each other any way we can.

    • What a wonderful video/story! We all need to realize as j points out here, that we are all in the same boat together. And if we don't stand together, we will sink separately. When my husband and I go to our regular watering hole, we hear the stories from the wait staff (many of them young, single mothers) how they struggle to make ends meet and despite not having much ourselves, make sure to tip them a little extra which they pretty much live on. We know that we could be in their place any day.

    • It sad that this has to be such a popular "feel-good" video...

It should be so common place as to not be notable...

Not complaining over you posting it, but we've regressed to the point helping someone out is a notable thing. Humanity left the building years ago in most places it seems. Going for so long telling ourselves of how bad we've got it, when most of us here don't have to go very far to see how much more worse it could be. Some of us here have in considerably worse, I'm sure of it.

I mean even when I was homeless I was relived every evening when the fast food chains closed and I new they'd be throwing out all those orders they screwed up at the end of the night.... Kept a positive attitude, helped out the "new to homelessness" crowd... I mean a person could starve or freeze to death if they didn't know the ropes or have a decent head on their shoulders...

I've seen allot of people have it pretty good in comparison go moping about life being hard....

Your life don't suck, live on discarded fast food, and in ditches and drainage pipes for a little while....

I absolutely agree with you - this type of thing should be so common that it's not something to post as "notable". I want to live in that world. It made me feel happy to make the video and post it, and I feel that some people thought about their lives and their commitment to making a difference, even in small ways. It made some think of their circumstances and how they were more fortunate than others, even when they thought they had it bad.

Thank you for your insightful comment.

I agree. We should be more grateful and always count our blessings, because things could always be worse.
It is good to know that you have overcome some challenging circumstances. Keep the positive attitude, and thanks for sharing your story!

    • How very true.
We can't wait for the government to help.
There are SO many things you and I can do on a daily basis that costs as much as a lottery ticket.
Share a meal. Plant a tree.

    • I make it a habit to always give to the homeless or any person that appears to be down on their luck. It breaks my heart to see people hungry and in need of shelter. I have held up traffic to give to people standing on the side of intersections with signs. Many people characterize them as drunks/addicts or people who want to live on the streets. I don't believe that no one in their right mind wants to live on the street. I could care less, I don't want to take a chance of not helping a person that is really in need of help. I also raised my kids to be giving, and I was raised to be giving, regardless of our/my circumstances.

Money is the cause of so much evil...it's best to keep only the bare minimum you need then get rid of what's left as fast as you can!

I would suggest that it's the attachment to the money (or the material goods and services it can buy) that is the root of much of what we see as evil. But I'm just refining semantics. Thank you for your post - it is much appreciated.

    • Wonderful video, jmarkred. Thank you for sharing this inspiring story with us.

Please know I enjoy the fact that you share so many sides of your self, including your "cynical" self, too.

Oh, the cynic will be back, he's just taking a short sabbatical. By the way, I think if you scratch the surface of the outward persona of most cynics, you'll find a deeper part of their character that wants to cry, shout, rail against the injustices of the world, but tries to maintain that veneer of sarcastic or ironic distance.

(Or I could be wrong about all of this).

    • Thank you JMark, you've put a whole lot into perspective for me today.
I have always believed in doing "simple acts of kindness" and until recently, have done them silently and anonymously. You have reminded me to "get up and start again." I'm now living in a very low-rent building because of a recent injury; I am damned lucky that I have a warm place with a roof. But this has happened for a reason.
All around me, I see castaway people, destitution - originally, most were unwanted babies - and they never had a chance in this life.
There are a zillion things I can do here, right under my nose - you've pointed the way with this message - I very much appreciate the "wake-up call."

    • I was approached by a man not too long ago who told me he was hungry and hadn't eaten for a few days and that he tried the pantry but it was empty. I walked with him to a pizza parlor about a block away and he got some pizza and a drink and I gave him enough to buy some other food there to last him for the day. He said he also had no place to stay so I directed him to a local church that I knew was a shelter. He started crying and thanked me. I just hope he got whatever else he needed. So you are so right. Even though we may be unemployed, which I am now too, I know I could have it a whole lot worse than so many do. We have to pay it forward. Thanks for your story.

Thank you for sharing your story, JanforGore. I think there are a lot more stories out there of simple, human kindness. It makes me feel good that people can act on their better impulses in the midst of all the troubling news in the world.

That's the kind of hope I felt yesterday when this happened, and I realized that help doesn't have to be a grand gesture - it can come in small ones. I'm glad it bightened your day.

I like this story and it is how I keep some sanity when the problems seem to be too overwhelming.

I am very sad about man's inhumanity to his fellow man that seems to be pervasive, but all we can do is make a difference in our own little worlds. If enough people decide to dedicate themselves to committing random acts of kindness a few times a day, we might be able to save this place from the sadists that seem to currently run the show.

That's exactly it - it's overwhelming for us to take on the world's problems, but the random acts of kindness that we can do on a daily basis will make a difference on both individual and collective levels if we just do them.

I believe that wholeheartedly, doing unto others as you would yourself! I just invented that!! Selfless action leads the way to personal freedom is a little fancier, but to the point.

We must remain vigilant against their socialist agenda! Harsh measures will have to be instituted. I think we should abolish the food stamp program. Hungry people do not have the energy to criticize the government.
