    • currently re-reading Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell, it sends shivers to the spine when one describes what the Spanish people can do on their own.

      Great book. I re-read it last year before a trip to Spain and, as before, was astonished at his descriptions of the boredom and filth of war.
      Lice and betrayals about sums it up.
      What I found just as astonishing was that in spite of the cynical and self-serving betrayals within his own leftist coalition, Orwell kept faith with the promise of socialism.
      At that time no doubt the choice was pretty stark and narrow between fascism and socialism, but still, I think he was a better man than I.

    • God, I love Spain!---especially Barcelona, the city that fought long and hard against Franco and the fascists.
      One wonders if the reputed autonomy of the regions of Spain might be enough to allow the various states to chart their own course. There is little love for the central government in most of the regions of Spain.
