Fat Ass Michael Moore: Pepper Sprayed Occupiers like Tiananmen Square Students

Showing either a lack of perspective, and ignorance of history, or else an epic capacity to prevaricate, film maker Michael Moore compared the pepper spraying of occupier protesters at UC Davis to the massacre of students in Tiananmen Square.

The incident, which took place Friday, involved campus police administering pepper spray to a group of seated, occupier protestors who had refused instructions to disperse. The incident has created a considerable amount of controversy, with apologies, threats of investigations, and demands for resignations all around. While some of the occupier protestors reported experiencing pain and fear as the pepper spray hit, no one actually died.

Tiananmen Square, on the other hand, involved a large group of peaceful, student protestors who had occupied the iconic plaza from April 1989 to June 3, when the Chinese Army moved in with tanks and bayonets and killed everyone they could catch, which by all accounts numbered in the thousands. Many more were arrested and sent to reeducation camps.

Unlike the Occupy Wall Street protestors, the students at Tiananmen Square behaved in a peaceful, civilized manner. There were no rapes or robberies taking place around the Goddess of Freedom. Nor did the Chinese students turn Tiananmen Square into a public bathroom.

So what was Michael Moore talking about, comparing a rough, but non fatal response to the defiance of a handful of occupiers to the massacre of thousands of human beings? It was, most likely, a lame attempt to infuse life into a sputtering movement by creating martyrs.

The only problem is that the handful of student malcontent who got their eyes burned make very poor martyrs indeed. They didn't actually die, which is something that usually has to happen to become a martyr. Nor was their agenda of any cosmic significance. They were protesting high tuition at California public universities and cut backs in higher education spending by the state. In other words, they were protesting that the cost of their attending school was too high.

Stipulating that higher education in the United States is too costly, that situation as a cause does not stir the blood quite like an attempt to overthrow a communist tyranny. It smacks of entitlement addled youth who, as usual, are directing their ire at the wrong target. They should be protesting university administrators, whose mismanagement has contributed so much to the higher education bubble.
