Get It Done: Urging Climate Justice, Youth Delegate Anjali Appadurai Mic Checks U.N. Summit

A number of protests are being held today at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Durban to protest the failure of world leaders to agree to immediately agree to a deal of binding emissions cuts. Anjali Appadurai, a student at the College of the Atlantic in Maine, addressed the conference on behalf of youth delegates. Just after her speech, she led a mic check from the stage — a move inspired by the Occupy Wall Street protests. "It always seems impossible until it’s done," Appadurai said. "So, distinguished delegates and governments around the world, governments of the developed world: Deep [emissions] cuts now. Get it done.

    • Am I insane to believe that carbon dioxide emission has nothing to do with fracking polution? Am I crazy to believe humans and animals are carbon dioxide emitters, and plants are in need of co2? Do I believe that taxing carbon emission is the same as a global tax on life itself? You gonna tax my dog for breathing? But hey, lets close our clean burning coal plants, force rolling blackouts on a crushed economy, while china builds twenty more a year. That will definitely heal the planet. Why is GE exempt from these new carbon taxes? Silence

    • Do not say our youth are lazy or that they do not know the score. They know more than many think and have much courage and caring. Thank you Anjali for speaking for my son and all those of your generation who are being sacrificed by these corporate vampires. The people united will never be defeated.

    • ...I'll probably get slammed for this, but until all the major emmiters on the planet work out a way to organise cheaper wind/solar energy, then nothing will change...wind turbines cost a bomb, and thousands are needed to generate anywhere near the energy that coal does...and as far as solar is concerned, I'm sure it would be implemented down here to a greater extent, but it's too bloody expensive for the average joe blow...countries look at their bottom line, and it ain't looking good...

I'm not being an appeaser here. Just thorough. Those statements are correct. Wind turbine costs are all up front. All the work has to be done to build a wind farm before energy can be used.

But, it is equally true that energy from wind farms cost no more than fossil fuels. That's because once the wind farm is built there is relatively no cost to continue to gather and store energy. Next, the costs to the environment are much less. To be real, climate change from fossil fuels will cost people money to move farms and cities to more favorable locations, and those costs will be incalculable.

Solar energy costs are still higher than fossil fuels, but those costs will likely come down as better assembly processes are developed with mass production - in the way that computer chip prices came down with more computers. Solar energy development might even create a situation in which increased energy usage would actually decrease energy cost rates.

Thank you for bringing that question to light. You know, I sort of miss JJ.

...everything in your post I agree with, but I'm sure you'll agree with me that the global economic downturn is in gallop mode...that's a stark reality...massive unemployment , manufacturing going offshore to balance the books, and claw back revenue...we all need electricity to exist in a myriad of ways...that's a no brainer...and the technology and implementation of solar/wind needs to be economically viable...small steps into the future...and just another point...Govt' wastage is monumental, globally...unil we sort that out (groan)...money will continue to be swallowed up in economic mismanagement, instead of going towards what we all need into the future...namely, "a future"...have a great Xmas D-man...

We could decrease emissions by 40% globally just through sustainable agriculture. It doesn't require huge turbines alone to do this, just the will of people to do it if they really care. And just to add, renewable energy will be transitioned to faster when corporations that pollute are made accountable for it, as in the carbon tax passed in Australia. That will help to bring that energy to you which will in the longterm bring renewable energy into parity with fossil fuels (which I believe has already happened regarding solar) thus bringing down costs.

...when you get a chance, google, Alan Jones, and the situation down here regarding coal seam gas mining in our prime agricultural areas in Australia, eg, the Darling Downs and the Liverpool plains...one of the biggest food bowls in the world being raped by fraking, which, as you know requires deadly chemicals going into the soil, and leaking into aquifers...apparently, farmers by law, down here, only own what's on top of the ground, and not what's underneath...thereby giving State Govt's a licence to hand out permits to drill to every man and his dog...a farmer was arrested last month for blocking the access to a company onto his land to drill...it's all about greed, and revenue...foreign companies buying up prime agricultural land, only to turn it into something resembling a crater on the moon...

This is so spread out around the world now. People in South Africa are even fighting to keep fracking out of the Karoo, a place of such diversity that will be ruined should fracking be allowed in there. When did we cede our world to these evil people to be poisoned? There are no other words to describe them for what they knowingly do. Thanks for mentioning that, I'll check it out.

Hi eden49. I understand there are economic problems. Energy costs are part of those problems. I think it is like getting a root canal. Waiting longer isn't going to make the problem go away.

Hey, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, wish you the best. : )
