Romney tells gay veteran he’ll repeal same-sex marriage

GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney had an interesting exchange with a gay veteran at a New Hampshire diner Monday morning.

According to The Boston Globe, 63-year-old Vietnam vet Bob Garon asked the former Massachusetts if he would support a repeal of the state allowing same sex marriage.

“I believe marriage is between a man and a woman,” Romney replied. “That’s my view.”

Garon was upset by Romney’s answer, explaining to the GOP candidate the troubles married gay veterans face.

“If two men get married, apparently a veteran’s spouse would not be entitled to any burial benefits or medical benefits or anything that the serviceman has devoted his time and effort to his country,” he told Romney. “And you just don’t support equality in terms of same-sex marriage?”

After Romney said “we apparently disagree,” Garon further showed his displeasure.

“It’s good to know how you feel,” he said. “That you do not believe that everyone is entitled to their constitutional rights.”

Romney instantly replied back to Garon’s opinion.

“No, actually, I think at the time the Constitution was written it was pretty clear that marriage is between a man and a woman,” he said. “And I don’t believe the Supreme Court has changed that.”

What has changed however is Romney’s position on another issue. While running for the Senate in 1994, he told a gay newspaper that same sex marriage was a “state issue as you know – the authorization of marriage on a same-sex basis falls under state jurisdiction.”

Garon told The Boston Globe afterwards that Romney’s chances at winning were doomed.

“The guy ain’t going to make it,” he said of Romney. “He is not going to make it. You can’t trust him. I just saw it in his eyes. I judge a man by his eyes.”

    • He doesn't seem to understand how the three branches of government work...bet he went to the same schools as Rick Perry...well maybe not, but his education had similar results...

      Anyway, today Mitt is bashing gays while tomorrow he will be promoting a gay military and officiating at gay marriages if he thinks there's any votes in it...

    • He won't do it. MItt Romeny has reached out to the gay community before when campaigning.

      Then Giuliani added a more potent charge among GOP voters. He said Romney "didn't even support Ronald Reagan."

      Romney has taken great pains to rebut Giuilani's charges during debate confrontations. But if Romney seems sensitive about his past campaign rhetoric, it's probably because there's reason to be.

      While Romney never said he was "to the left of Teddy Kennedy on gay rights," Romney did reach out to gay and lesbian voters during his failed 1994 bid for Kennedy's Senate seat. More to the point, Romney said he could outperform Kennedy on gay and lesbian issues."

      Yup, the company I am employed with just hired an Iraqi Vet... He was well liked and even fit the mold... Well kinda, he is half white and half mexican, and even a republican...

      But what Freaked them out most??? He is Muslim... They instantly Hated him and probably thought he was a Traitor... He was one of those folks that thought for himself, and was well aware of the Reverse Discrimination at this place of employment... I am sure he thanked goodness our boss was not his company leader, if that were the case he would have lost his life in Iraq... Very Decent Fella, and I don't speak with many at work, He did not come to work today, I am sure he saw as many of us have and I especially for the last 5 years!!!
