Rep. Jan Schakowsky: House Republicans stole your Christmas

Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) blasted House Republicans on Tuesday as they planned to kill the Senate compromise bill to extend the payroll tax cut and unemployment insurance.

If the payroll tax cut and employment insurance is not extended, 160 million Americans will see their taxes go up by $1000 in 2012 and 2.5 million jobless workers will lose unemployment benefits.

“Don’t blame Congress for not working together,” she said on the House floor. “Blame the House Republicans — who can’t even work with each other.”

“The one and only reason this House of Representatives is not voting for the bi-partisan Senate bill to provide relief to middle class taxpayers, seniors and disabled on Medicare and jobless Americans is because it would pass That’s right. The Republican scam was to bring up the bill, supported by 90% of the Senate, and kill it.”

“On the way to this slaughter, a funny thing happened,” Schakowsky continued. “Sensible Republicans basically said, ‘You want me to vote to abandon millions of struggling middle class Americans without the help they need this holiday season? No way!’”

Republican House Speaker John Boehner said Monday that his members agreed the payroll tax cut should be extended for a full year. Democrats had originally pushed for a one-year extension and a surtax on millionaires, but agreed to compromise on a short-term extension.

The House voted 229 to 193 along partisan lines to reject the compromise bill on Tuesday. The Senate is currently in recess and is not scheduled to return until January 23.

“The sanctimonious rhetoric you hear today from the Republicans is nothing but talk, baby-talk,” Schakowsky said. “If they don’t get their way exactly, they won’t play.”

“And so, Happy Chanukah to middle class Americans lighting the first candle tonight who won’t get their $1000 tax break. Happy New Year to our seniors and persons with disabilities who may lose their doctors.”

“Merry Christmas to the jobless Americans, desperate for work, looking for work, who barely survive on unemployment checks. The House Republicans are the Grinches who stole your Christmas.”

    • Last week the HOuse voted to extend the payroll tax cut another through all of 2012. On Tuesday, Boehner told Harry Reid that the House would negotiate with the Senate over the payroll tax but Reid says no negotiations until the Senates 2 month extension is law. The difference is the unemployment benefit changes.
      The House wanted the longer payroll cut extension but the Senate is balking. Now this wackjob Schakowsky (why is it the loons in politics seem to come from Illinois) is saying it is the Republican fault while ignoring the role and refusal to talk that is coming from Reids office. She is a liar. The Senate and the Dems share this equally. The problem is, the concept of compromise and an agreement per the Democrats means doing everything the way they want. Comopromise is one side abandoning their platform completely and adopting the Democrat wishes. THAT is compromise to Dems. No wonder D.C. has problems. The Democrat Party really needs to learn that compromise means both sides gives up not the other side has to do things your way.

By not being able to buy a bunch of garbage (mostly from China) to push on unsuspecting relatives as a cheap replacement for actual love and concern, that somehow "ruined" Christmas...?

      I'm jobless because the corporations have outlawed my trade, with policies even Obama approves of. Seems "medicinal cannabis cultivater" is illegal, which is good, people shouldn't have to pay taxes on natural medicine, and even the "legal" operations have been filled with mostly overly wealthy opportunistic pigs.... And therefore an "elitist" thing...

      Obama has kept me out of a job, how was I supposed to know after years of study, and even public school telling me "you live in a 'free' country" it was all a crock of horseshit? And I shouldn't have to go back to school, incur massive personal debt, and be a slave to the system....

      No Obama stole Christmas, and he might as well be a republican, guess she is right.....

      Wondering how much more oil he's going to allow to be spilled into the gulf (love that fresh spill the other day), how much bloodshed home and abroad due to failed policies and fraudulent "wars", wonder how many new coal slurry ponds will degrade further to be a s more serious environmental threat under his watch, wonder how long he'll stand idly by as the natural gas industry hydro-fracks our aquifers unusable, while allowing oil piped from tar-sands to ensure the aquifers don't stand a chance, wonder if he'll ever stand up against Monsanto, if he'll ever call out the SCOTUS for approving the patenting of life forms which is legally UNACCEPTABLE, Wonder if he will sign NDAA or if he really thinks he'll maintain control if he does?

      Nope, Obama ruined Christmas.

      All the GOP has done since Obama won the White House is block any attempt to govern... under the pretense that they all signed Grover Norquist's pledge "NOT TO RAISE TAXES". In typical GOP obfuscation- what they left out of that treasonous pledge reveals their true allegiance. That pledge was only to the mega wealthy in the 1%.

      I don't know about you but I'm counting on all Progressives here to do their duty next election by reelecting President Obama. Any realistic alternative is unthinkable.

      What get's me are all UNDECIDED throughout the country. How can anyone still be on the fence! These bipeds must not get enough attention so they string the entire country along while they ponder which Kool-aid they might like best. It boggles the mind how anyone can see the greed and corruption in Washington and not know who's responsible for it by now.

      You know, when I wrote that post above it was seriously an epiphany -- I've understood for a long time that they hate Obama but I never really got that the reason the reptards and the teatards were so mean to us was because we had the balls to vote in a black DEMOCRAT instead of continuing to let them shit all over us and OUR country. Eight years of the BUSH DEPRESSION damned near broke this country and enriched the 1% 300 times over -- I honestly think they figured they were so close to their goal of complete oligarchy that there was no way they couldn't win.       Unfortunately, history shows us the only solution when it gets this broken is REVOLUTION by the people. But the 1% know this all to well so you can be sure they're extremely busy preparing a multifaceted response to such a revolt. Look at how each city eventually handled it's OCCUPY movements.
