Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney insisted on Wednesday that President George W. Bush would never have invaded Iraq if he had known that were no weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in the country.
“If we knew at the time of our entry into Iraq that there were no weapons of mass destruction, if somehow we had been given that information, why, obviously we would not have gone in,” the candidate told MSNBC’s Chuck Todd.
“You don’t think we would have gone in at all?” Todd asked.
“Well, of course not,” Romney declared. “The president went in based upon intelligence they had weapons of mass destruction. Had he known that was not the case, the U.N. would not have put forward resolutions authorizing this type of action. The president would not have been pursuing that course, but we did not know that. Based upon what we knew at the time, we were very much under the impression as a nation — as our president was under the impression — that they had weapons of mass destruction, that Saddam Hussein was intent on potentially using those weapons. And so, he took action based upon what he knew.”
“But to go back and say, ‘Knowing what we know now, would we have gone in?’ Well, knowing what we know now, they did not have weapons of mass destruction. There would have been no effort on the part of our president or others to take military action,” the former Massachusetts governor added.
There is evidence to suggest that Bush was told that Iraq had no WMD before he gave the order to launch a military action that would eventually last longer than World War II and cost more than the Vietnam War.

Let's see what the other side of the aisle, those always correct, wonderfully tolerant Dems/liberals, say about this:
"There's no question that Saddam Hussein is a threat... Yes, he has chemical and biological weapons. He's had those for a long time. But the United States right now is on a very much different defensive posture than we were before September 11th of 2001... He is, as far as we know, actively pursuing nuclear capabilities, though he doesn't have nuclear warheads yet. If he were to acquire nuclear weapons, I think our friends in the region would face greatly increased risks as would we." -- Wesley Clark on September 26, 2002"What is at stake is how to answer the potential threat Iraq represents with the risk of proliferation of WMD. Baghdad's regime did use such weapons in the past. Today, a number of evidences may lead to think that, over the past four years, in the absence of international inspectors, this country has continued armament programs." -- Jacques Chirac, October 16, 2002
"The community of nations may see more and more of the very kind of threat Iraq poses now: a rogue state with weapons of mass destruction, ready to use them or provide them to terrorists. If we fail to respond today, Saddam and all those who would follow in his footsteps will be emboldened tomorrow." -- Bill Clinton in 1998
"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including Al Qaeda members, though there is apparently no evidence of his involvement in the terrible events of September 11, 2001. It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons. Should he succeed in that endeavor, he could alter the political and security landscape of the Middle East, which as we know all too well affects American security." -- Hillary Clinton, October 10, 2002
"I am absolutely convinced that there are weapons...I saw evidence back in 1998 when we would see the inspectors being barred from gaining entry into a warehouse for three hours with trucks rolling up and then moving those trucks out." -- Clinton's Secretary of Defense William Cohen in April of 2003
"Iraq is not the only nation in the world to possess weapons of mass destruction, but it is the only nation with a leader who has used them against his own people." -- Tom Daschle in 1998
And one by the climate huckster:
"Iraq does pose a serious threat to the stability of the Persian Gulf and we should organize an international coalition to eliminate his access to weapons of mass destruction. Iraq's search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to completely deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power." -- Al Gore, 2002
Just to name a few
Both sides of the aisle and many foreign government/intel services were convinced Saddam had all this wmd. Don't forget the Kurds who were actually on the receiving end of some. Bush didn't make this up, neither did Chaney. Actually, what Romney says on this subject about whether Bush would have gone to Iraq had he known there were no wmd is irrelevant. He is entitled to his opinion just as the many wrong people here are. Just don't lay this solely at the feet of Bush saying he + Chaney thought of this and everyone else knew better. It is plain that the world was convinced but only one person did anything. Right or wrong, up to each one of us to decide. At least he went to Congress for authorization, not like our current administration did in Lybia.

Bush knew that there was no good intel that hinted at, or suggested the possibility of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. He had Cheney create a one man intelligence gathering cell, which consisted of Dick Cheney in a broom closet, that somehow found "definite" intel that the entire CIA with it's vast resources and manpower could not find.
Then again, as intelligent as Bush appeared, perhaps I am giving him too much credit. I still am of the opinion that Cheney was the real president for those eight years and Bush was a puppet operated by Dick Cheney.

If your comment is a snark, good one! If it;s not try to remember that US forces were in the country for 9 years and never found a single WMD. Second, if he had them then got rid of them, that means he was in compliance with the UN resolutions and there was no reason to invade. Third, sources close to Hussein stated that all the WMDs were destroyed, per the UN demands, after the first Gulf War. However, Hussien didn't state it publicly mainly as a deterrent to Iran who, they had fought a bloody war against in the 80's(supported by US money and Intel and bioweapons)

Trying to understand where Romney's coming from is like nailing Jello to a tree. The man is shapeless, formless seemingly without a definite point of view. That said, his comment is pure BS. I remember surfing the web to check W's claim about Husseins reported WMD and found people crying foul everywhere. The neocons wanted war (as long as they and their kids didn't have to fight it), facts be damned. And after 9 years, 4500 dead US Soldiers, and 100,000 dead Iraqi civilians we've withdrawn from a country that is arguably in worse condition than prior to the US attack.

What a tool. The war was planned before the 2000 election they stole to get Bush in to implement it. PNAC even wrote to President Clinton to get him to invade Iraq and he wouldn't do it. How convenient for them that 9.11 happened not even a year after that stolen election to give them the opportunity they were waiting for.

Irrelevant? Romney said the UN approved of the invasion of Iraq. It did not. It is highly relevant that Mitt for Brains doesn't even know enough recent history to be the leader of the free world..One empty headed rethuglicant ( Bush ) was quite enough, the world doesn't need another one. How do you know a rethuglicant is lying? Their mouth is open.

RIGHT and there is a million dollar check in my mail box. What a joke. Let me see, all those military contracts had nothing to do with it. How many millions per day were paid to these folks for the last 8 – 9 years? By the way, that is 3,285 days – do the math.
Let’s not forget the real reason we went to Iraq – OIL. Also remember the oil company hooks that now exist in Iraq is what they really wanted.
It only cost about 5000 lives and 35,000 wounded but the wealthy got wealthier. The GOP, at least they are consistent and deliver to their friends. Is this a very sick country or what? - 5 months ago

he would have been born dead ) And too little credit for Bush's evil shoot
first and ask questions later bad attitude. The unvarnished truth is unknown
to Corporatist puppets like Romney, but we're both honest enough to sense
it. Bush wouldn't have invaded Iraq if: 1. It wasn't an OPEC nation competing
with Saudi Arabia, whom Bush acted as an agent for, and whose oil profits
doubled as a direct result of that invasion. 2. If the U.S.military didn't loot $16
Billion on Gold Bullion from the Iraqi Central Bank Gold depository in Bagdad
circa Sept/Oct.2006 as reported in Rolling Stone magazine. 3. That he & Cheny
stood to become Billionaires when the new Oil & gas pipelines are completed t
hey've planned to build since 2003 to replace the failing Alaskan Oil pipeline.
Only Iraq, Afghanistan and one other country has the stategic real estate
needed to supply fossil fuels to oil/natural gas tankers which are ocean
going to the USA. 4. If Bush didn't want to make the USA dependent on
foreign oil to all our detriment to keep his oil dynasty family lubed. 5. If Bush
Sr didn't install Sadam Hussein in Iraq, who turned on him, threatened him,
causing Bush Jr to initiate a blood fued to kill Sadam Husein's & family over it.The USA could have been made energy independent with a well funded green
movement twice over from 2003-2011 if that butt monkey had invested public
money instead of burning it. Germany is already largely green energy inde
pendent, and has outlawed gas engine cars on German highways & streets
by 2020. By 2020 at this rate the USA will still be spinning it's wheels going
nowhere but down. These are sensible motivations, not attibuting spiritual i
integrity to a torturer and Mass Murderer war criminal who obviously has none..

Without meaning to contradict you, Japan did attack the U.S.fleet stationed
at Pearl Harbor knowing they would loose the war they started. Yamamoto
said as much he was afraid all he'd done in stealth was to wake a sleeping
giant. The Japanese wanted to control Asia & the South Pacific as it's sphere
of influence. Kind of like the Monroe doctrine proclaims hands off S.America.
They took an aweful chance, and yes they failed to understand the American
resolve for Liberty. The Japanese were aculturated to believe their lives were
cheap, that if they died the deaths of the Samuri in service to their Emperor
Hirohito, they'd go to heaven. Though they were fanatical, mentaly unbalanced
w/the Bhuddist belief of mind over matter they twisted & distorted into believing
they were invincible, that turned out to be a delusion of grandeur to indoctinate
& propagandize their people to chant hatred of the enemy as in Orwells 1984..I watch the Military channel a lot, and have studied WW2 in color. American
GIs were astounded the Japanese would help their own wounded along
as Americans did during the Bataan death march after the Philipenes fell.
But in the end both sides realized too late the humanity they'd sacrificed.
The English as Bletchly Park cracked the Japanese code and had advance
knowledge of the Pearl Harbor sneak attack. They were forced to withhold
it to bring the USA into the war because the USA was so isolationist after
WW1. England was being gang raped and nearly beaten to death after
they shouldered the burden of fighting the Germans, Italians, Japanese.
Their empire was crumbling. Getting to sound more like current events
every day though. - 5 months ago
