Murrieta police responded shortly before 8 p.m. to a shooting call at Spelly’s Bar and Grille off Murrieta Hot Springs Road. A white male was found dead of multiple gunshot wounds inside.
The killing was the second to rock the city in as many days. The hunt is still on for a man accused of stabbing 18-year-old Saskia Burke to death in her Murrieta home early Tuesday morning before assaulting her father and boyfriend.
The bar shooter, an off-duty Riverside County sheriff’s deputy, surrendered himself to police without a struggle at the front door, Lt. Tony Conrad said.
The suspect was detained and transferred to Murrieta police headquarters for questioning. The city police department is taking the lead in the shooting investigation with support from the county sheriff’s department.
A sheriff’s spokesman said the department had no comment on the incident and referred requests for information to Murrieta police.
Police shut down the pub’s parking lot and moved about 30 witnesses who were inside at the time of the shooting to a nearby Starbucks for questioning.
Witness from inside
Chris Hull, a 39-year-old Temecula resident, said he was inside the bar and saw the shooting happen.
Hull said he witnessed a man walking up while Hull and a group of friends were playing darts. The man reportedly identified himself as an off-duty cop and started a discussion with the group about darts.
“We were playing darts, and he says 'I’m better at darts than you are,”' Hull said.
“My buddy says, ‘Aw, you suck at darts.’ (The man) says, ‘That’s why I’m a cop, I can do whatever I want to do.’”
Hull said his friend, identified only as Danny, asked the man, “Really, you can do anything?” The man then pulled out his gun, Hull said, and after the group repeatedly asked him to put it away he “pops three rounds into my friend Sam.”
Hull identified his friend as Sam Venettes. He didn't answer a request for Vanette's age or hometown, but said he was a "hardworking guy" who "works three jobs."
Police have not released any information on the name of the victim.
"I just watched the most horrific scene I've seen in my entire life," Hull told Patch.
"This is the worst day of my life."
The shooting was unrelated to the Tuesday stabbing death and ongoing manhunt for the suspect, Conrad said.

We shouldn't give police officers guns whenever they're off duty. You don't know what they gonna do.

This is the kind of shit that happens when police departments are forced to hire just about anybody due to rich politicians slashing budgets because they don't want to raise taxes. My sister-in-law is a cop in Atlanta and she's told me that you no longer even need a college degree to be a police officer there, because the department can't pay new officers enough to attract college grads.

No if the fool didn't have a gun two things might have happened. 1. He would have kept his dumbass mouth shut. Or 2 he would have got a well deserved but whipping. Guns (esp. handguns)serve one purpose only to give someone the power of life and death. The more available they are the more they will fall into the hands of stupid people.

This is another example of what PD's are hiring all over the country. They are psychopathic, societal dregs paid to instill fear and intimidate the populace.

WTF?
Come on- what kind of a police officer simply shoots someone dead over who's better at darts? There must be more to this one... yes?
While I absolutely loath corrupt, power starved cops (like those spraying innocent citizens with pepper spray during legal OWS protests) I must say I have a very hard time believing this is the 'complete story' here.
I'm guessing somebody tried to make a grab for his gun and this troglodyte pulled the trigger while 'defending himself'. All you police officers out there - don't you typically need to be in the process of 'performing your duty' before you can just pull your gun from its holster? Is showing your piece off in a bar even legal?

I think there are multiple answers to that question. One being...you get what you pay for. Another being...about 40% of the population is mentally unstable.

Being selective seems vital to me . I have always thought it had to do with the wars we are in . All those soldiers that WOULD have gotten out by now , may have been better choices for cops , but they are not even in the continent . It just seems to me the quality of cops has taken a nosedive since these pointless wars were started , like it unbalanced the entire culture , not just the economy ... What do you think about it ?

Thinkin you may be onto something. A lot of first responders, especially in smaller, more rural communities, are also in the National Guard or Reserves. A lot of them got called up, leaving too many communities with too few trained (and mentally stable) first responders. So, yeah, more vacancies for the second stringers for cop land.
Add economy that is pushing people to extreme behaviors and cops that see too much domestic trouble in the course of work. Lots of them might be seeing too much at home too.
Throw in decades of hate radio telling a part of the population that they are being put upon simply because others want equal rights. Lots of insecure authoritarians running around in various uniforms, rent-a-cop to real cops. Add a dash of Homeland Security militarization of local law enforcement agencies, thanks neo-con chicken hawks that was simply swell ::dripping with sarcasm:: and things are just gonna explode all over.
One might even wonder about roid rage with some insecure cops. More toxins in our daily life thanks to less safety enforcement and more unsafe imports brought in by greedy multi-nationals; hey things affect people differently and some are more easily poisoned by environmental toxins.
Mix in a container called 'tis the season' and sprinkle will societal failure to provide resources for good mental health.
I swear, TPTB want an unstable and volatile populace killing each other off and keeping the masses so paranoid they don't notice all the real heavy duty economic violence being done to us all.

I think you're spot on correct with this one, just one more thing I thought of, I recently heard a story off NPR, that many join the military as a much easier route to becoming a cop in their off-duty time, bearing in mind that many of our mercenaries who return from active duty are often not exactly "stable" but easily qualify for being hired as police due to their military background, hence, more and more of the police force is becoming paramilitary, and many of those are simply not stable.

Good post...I think the most important thing you touched on was the "...societal failure to provide rseources for good mental health." Since states began closing mental institutions back in the sixties because they were seen as inhumane and too great an expense for state budgets, mental care in this country has continued to deteriorate until we have a nearly non-existant public mental health system in this country...
Most Americans get there mental health information from show biz quacks like Dr Phil and Dr Drew...while the real mental problems are everywhere: in our work places; on the streets in various forms including the homeless; in our schools (students, teachers, employees) ; in colleges, churches etc. MDs are pushing more and more mind altering drugs to a growing population of people who sufer everything from mild depression to various phycoses and the plethora of personality disorders...
Many of the mentally ill in this country have nowhere to turn when they find themselves in crisis because there are no facilities for them...and some of them end up in positions of power and authority which they are ill-equipped to handle...
