When I was very young my father was Superintendent of Chaco Canyon National Monument (ancient home of the Anasazi); I had the opportunity to return there a few years ago. I have also visited Stonehenge and after seeing a program about Chaco on PBS I seriously believe Chaco is the North American Stonehenge. I found these writings by googling Chaco;
The United States Forest Service began in 2005 to allow visitors up the mesa seven nights a year (once a month, from July through January) to watch the moonrise. Similar moonrises occur at Stonehenge and at Callanish in Scotland, the two other sites in the world where archaeo-astronomers have found substantial evidence that preliterate peoples used immense stone structures to mark the place in the sky where the moon stands still.
The Chacoan religious structures were the platform mounds, which was what might be expected across North America during that time period. I believe that expansive ceremonies were conducted on platform mounds and “pyramids,” much as in other major cultures of that era. I believe that these ceremonies focused on “sun god” beliefs as symbolized by the Scarlet Macaw. The kiva or earth goddess ceremonies occurred at a much later time period (C.E. 1275) when the matrilineal indigenous clan established dominance over the male dominated Sun/Scarlet Macaw clan(s).

How did I miss this beautiful post?
I camped out (illegally) at Chaco canyon back in the 90s. Profound dreams!
I'm thinking of honoring 12/21/12 (0.0.0.0.0) at the great Serpent Mount in Ohio. Built at the time of Ce Acatl Quetzalcoatl (cir. 1000 CE) it is an American Stonehenge. It charts the course of the equinoxes and solstices from the mouth and the tail of this monumental snake.
Thanks for reminding me. - 5 months ago
