I've been to quite a few places. And nowhere that I've been, that I haven't noticed racism, either subtle or extremely blatant. It doesn't matter if it's this country, Mexico, Canada, Japan, wherever, it's out there, and it isn't going to change anytime soon. Same with discrimination against gays, religions, skins colors, regional differences, whatever, people seem programmed to hate, to blame other people for their problems, and I am pretty sure it isn't going to end in my or my kids lifetimes.

I have friends in Mexico, Canada, Jamaica, Scotland, Ireland, well...the British Isles...Panama, Cuba (yes...don't tell the U.S. government, okay?), Trinidad and Texas...it is an independent nation, correct?...well, at least THEY think they are!...and I've ALWAYS realized that they all are just like me...peel away the governmental, religious and economic layers and I have not seen any racism, intolerance or bigotry exhibited by the REAL people of any place I've been!
Of course, I don't "do" the tourist traps...I go out to where the ordinary, average human beings work and live and I have been welcomed into their homes and treated like an honored guest...everywhere I've visited.
Maybe it's just the way I am and the way I come across to others but I have felt kindness and love of the NORMAL people in each country I have been blessed to have met.
Some of these friendships have lasted for decades now. I now know their grandchildren and have gone through their loss of parents and grandparents as I have and if there's one thing in common I've witnessed is we're ALL human beings with the same needs, wants and desires.....a roof over our heads, food in the pantry, clothes to cover our bodies, education for our children and just enjoying life to the fullest.
I am not the exception to the rule....I am just like them...and they are just like me!

Huey Long...a man among men!
"We do not propose to say that there shall be no rich men. We do not ask to divide the wealth. We only propose that, when one man gets more than he and his children and children's children can spend or use in their lifetimes, that then we shall say that such person has his share. That means that a few million dollars is the limit to what any one man can own."

I worked for a company that had mixed races and we had no problems. There are some that believe it is forgotten and no longer exists. it is true that racism is not the problem it was in the past, but there is still an undercurrent of racism in our culture.

When parody picture after picture of Mr. and Mrs. Obama are posted and emailed throughout the intertubes (as this one that has been circulated about by Rethuglican idjits)....I would hazard to say that racism is not as "undercurrent" as one might believe.
As a matter of fact, racist, homophobic, misogynistic and the anti socialistic behaviors that's being exhibited by the rightwingers now is so blatant that I can't imagine how it could have been worse 30, 40, 50 or even 60 years ago! What with all these Red States that have instigated voter suppression rights, achieving employment, terribly underfunded and segregated inner-city schools and unscrupulous mortgage loan practices it certainly appears to me that I'm reliving the 1950s and 1960s all over again!
I now know what the Republicans mean when they say they want to take "their" country back....and from whom and to where! Anyone who isn't white and prior to the civil rights movement.
And this is my opinion, but of course.
You and I are old enough to remember the days when segregation was prevalent in this country. It was driven below the surface (just barely)...but has since reared its ugly head again from the day Mr. Obama raised his hand to take the Oath of Office.
And it's been getting uglier and uglier every day!

I have not received this one yet, but some as bad. One of my republican friends sends me pictures, not a citizen, brought our country down. This person claims to be religious. Some times she sends religious material, that I respect her beliefs. I fineally blocked her e-mails. When she called me she swore she wasn't racist, just felt the president wasn't good for our country. I had to tell her she was racist and I didn't think much of her religion. her god if he believed in sending this vile stuff thru the internet. No more friendship.
When I see right wingers, congress, teaparty being interviewed and ask if they believe the President is a citizen. They go thru so many around and about the question. It has to be pryed out of them to say, yes he is a citizen. I always since an undercurrent of hostility, Non belief. Perhaps undercurrent was the wrong word to use, yet I see, hear, read statements that I know are not words of truth. I see a congress that would never help our president, just to get rid of him, yet are not happy with their own candidates running for the office. I see some of his own party not stand by him. Yes, there is still racism, hate in our country.
I remember when segregation was prevalent in this country. It was bad and for a while I thought would end altogether in another generation. Then when Barack Obama became president I saw it's ugly head raise again.
I was so proud to have lived when the first black man became president as I would have been if the first women had become president. I have learned since that many do not have my pride. The worst part is he is working at helping the middle class, not the top money earners.

Cheers for YOU for calling her out on her well-hidden racism.
Without a doubt, there's racism aplenty in our society. It's taught at the knees of mom and dad - "different is BAD."
Investigating it further, it's usually based on fear and ignorance - of the unknown mostly, but fear, plain and simple. What follows that fear is the need to BE superior, and the only way to accomplish that is to subjugate "the other" - the "different."
We must "breed it out" of our society or we'll be taken down by the bogeyman instead of "real" destructive occurrences and issues - issues we can tackle and to which we can make changes.

I think it does the vast majority of us a disservice who feel the same way you do by those who focus only on the few that cause and perpetuate hate and division upon so many.
The analogy of one rotten apple spoiling the whole basket is so true.
All we need to do is learn to toss that apple away when it turns bad and the rest of us can live in peace and harmony!
You're such a kindhearted person that I can understand why it grieves you so. It does me, also.
But we MUST remember...there's more of us good apples than those bad ones!
And I agree with you...like you did with that incorrigible bad apple that enjoyed spreading bad "vibes"...toss 'em into the "garbage pile" of lost souls!
We don't need their kind anywhere near us or in our lives with their habits of spreading that vile bile like smelly manure!
May the New Year ahead be a cheerful and prosperous one!

I've been there, M'Lady.....about four years ago a person with whom I've known for over thirty years - I was friends with his parents and when he became an adult we were always doing things together like fishing, playing games like dominos/cards/darts/pool/video/discgolf etc., etc., etc., spent time with each other's family...the whole shebang. But when he and his wife were having financial difficulties that were of his making, I noticed how he was applying AND getting a slew of credit cards and was having the time of his life buying two of everything - laptops, expensive toys and jewelry - and eating out more often than Donald Trump, which prompted me to ask how he was going to pay for all that "stuff" and his reply was he had decided to file for bankruptcy and they most likely wouldn't come for the things he purchased. I told him in no uncertain terms that what he was doing was outright theft and I could not go on associating with a thief.
Our friendship of 36 years came abruptly to an end.
He was correct, though. He got to keep EVERYTHING. Which made me think that this greedy system is set up for the likes of them. Of course, what he did pales in comparison to what bigger fish in this "sea of debt and deceit" do with monies of the working class by way of stealing their tax dollars or pension funds...but still...theft is theft, no matter who is doing it or for what purpose.
And don't fret over typos, etc., why, I'm the King of 'em! And most of us make 'em.
Nobody's 'PREFECT'...no matter what they believe.

Not sound racist, but both are racist, but as stated earlier, for different reasons. I think the most telling as far as whites go is the crime rate statics and the HUGE disproportional rate of blacks in our nations prisons. Put simply, living in an urban part of town, if I want to stay safe, my butt is home when the sun goes down. Unfortunately for all blacks, one bad apple spoils the whole bunch.

I think that white people tend to be racist in a different kind of way than black people.
For white people, the racism seems to be that of annoyance towards "outsiders" who are seen as lazy.
For black people, the racism seems to be that of antagonism for all things even slightly critical of the urban culture, even moreso if it is specific to people with dark skin. It's fueled, it seems, from a perception that they aren't fully part of society, and therefore do not participate in its benefits. They also seem to feel like there is a larger conspiracy of white people trying to keep them in their place, and that they are scapegoated for the society's ills.
Neither side is right, and neither side is entirely wrong: The scapegoating is very common among a LOT of the Republicans I know.
Racism is a sliding scale from enjoying stereotypical humor all the way out to being militantly anti-whomever.
I feel Gen-X and Y are largely on the mild side of the sliding scale and the racism tends to get thicker and thicker as you observe older and older generations.
It's probably, more than anything, a function of how sophisticated the tools for communication are and the perceived size of your "tribe" which results from the utility of those tools, if that makes any sense.
My two pennies.

I have an idea! Instead of creating laws that dictate who can marry whom, why don't we outlaw slums and piss-poor schools?
Talk about "morality" laws....
Let me put any so-called "race" of people housed in inner-city ghettos and see how long they remain law-abiding citizens!
It's the nature of the human beast....those who are in positions of power and money lord over those that have neither.
It was the same story for the Irish when they first came to these shores. Or Germans. Or Swedes. It certainly didn't have anything to do with the color of those immigrants, now did it?
Greed is the culprit. Pure, unadulterated greed!
Oh...and power.
Just ask many Native Americans...who just so happen to STILL be living in "concentration camps" throughout the U.S of A. today!
All I got....for now.

But by turning away and not acknowledging their existence be considered a form of enabling?
Should we not counteract their insipid inanity with condemnation of their promoting of hatred?
Ignoring them doesn't cause them to become invisible. Rather, it emboldens their antisocial behavior.
If you were to ask me.
I'd prefer to not trouble trouble until trouble troubles me....and what they profess is troubling to me.
If you may recall the age-old statement..,
"First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist. Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me."And trust me, they're coming for SOMEONE! And they believe it's their inalienable right to use Second Amendment "remedies", too!
Perhaps that is why the Stalins and Hitlers came into power by not having enough thinking and caring "voices" speaking out loudly to prevent insanity to propagate!

I cannot disagree with the logic. It has been shown to be true too many times in the past.
However, for myself, personally, I found I cannot focus on the many wrongs within our society and our system.
I was drowning in despair! I finally came up for air...withdrew from Current and other news sources for a couple of months, and when I finally settled back in, except for acknowledging the many wrongs, and posting a few on a website I have, I decided to concentrate more on environmental issues...(hence the studies/degree I am working toward in Environmental Science) at least I FEEL as though I can make an immediate impact on small things.
As for the other....I do not want to lose my balance anymore....

Blacks, or whites 'is' US. I work in an industry, which is a mix of races. I do not feel racial tension in the plant. The racial tension today is coming from politicians and media. Not the people I work with. Ordinary Americans doing their jobs, regardless of skin, or ethnicity. It's not till we get home and turn on the television that race factors in.

Bill,
I don't mean to be an art critic here, but what has been placed on this symbol is wrong.from Wikipedia:
Yin yang are not opposing forces (dualities), but complementary opposites that interact within a greater whole, as part of a dynamic system. Everything has both yin and yang aspects as light cannot exist without darkness and vice-versa, but either of these aspects may manifest more strongly in particular objects, and may ebb or flow over time. The concept of yin and yang is often symbolized by various forms of the Taijitu symbol, for which it is probably best known in western cultures. There is a perception (especially in the West) that yin and yang correspond to evil and good. However, Taoist philosophy generally discounts good/bad distinctions and other dichotomous moral judgments, in preference to the idea of balance.
