At least in Montana, corporations are not people -- Supreme Court upholds progressive ban on direct corporate donations

However, the State Supreme Court this week upheld Montana's progressive 1912 law. At least in Montana, corporations are not people yet. They can still form PACs, but there are reporting rules about where they raise the money and how they spend it, which is what these right-wing groups were trying to circumvent. No word if this is going to get appealed to federal courts.

And when our guv went to D.C. complaining about the use of all but one of our National Guard's helicopters in Iraq, leaving the 4th largest state (area wise) in the union at risk during fire season, he got our birds (and pilots) back.
When he started raising a fuss about gop/bush national ID as being an unfunded mandate that just might be violating a whole can of worms, bush and the gop backed off.
We be small in numbers, but we have some pretty damned good people who think clearly and will not buy all the foolishness so many pols sell so well to so many.

Sadly, the Guv's term is up this year. =( He has been a real inspiration and really turned things around from the SERIOUS mess left from 3 GOP terms that just about bankrupted the state and saw a lot of stupid things done.
Schweitzer has led some great people bringing Montana right along. And he always stayed a few jumps ahead of GOP folly. Think he had an impact on government in several western states. A real leader.

Loves to cook and garden? That'd be me too. But we have a short growing season here.
If serious about looking to MT, look to the western part, more liberals there. Lots of earth mother types if you look carefully for friends. Missoula area pretty blue. Helena is heaven in my book. Whitehall, between Butte and Bozeman is a lovely little town and a bit of a 'banana belt' The winds there keep it a bit warmer than much of the state in winter so a bit more growing time. Lovely valley along Jefferson River. And Rumsfeld bought a place just south of there. Be a great place to annoy him.
Butte is a great town. Too tough to give up no matter what happens. Lots of tech stuff going on there. Boom or bust, the people in Butte always fine a way...
Bozeman area is nice too. If you ski, lots of ways to go there.
Billings is growing and not as far right as it used to be.
Great Falls, hmmmm, OK to visit but I would never want to live there.
Or, you could look up David Letterman's place LOL.

Wow...sounds like you love it out there. I am convinced, think I'll start looking into it further. As fo the gardening have you read Elliot Coleman's "Four Season Harvest"? It is a few years old now, but he grows something every season on his farm in Maine...might be useful info. Thanks for your thoughts.

He's as cute as a bug's ear and has a great dog too. Yeah, he really got ahead of the GOP dolts in the legislature. Love how he mentioned the rise in liquor sales in Helena when the legislature was in session! ROFL. He really nailed them for their drinking, and especially on their drinking on lobbyists' dimes!

Thanks for the book recommendation. We are sorta an ag research lab at our house, always trying new things and tweaking the old ones. Gonna try some modified hoop sheltered gardening come spring. Husband wants to see if we can improve on the micro-climate we have created in our little corner of the earth and expand the season for eggplant and okra, two veggies I love and and converted him to!
Love it here? Yes re the west, not so much about the eastern part of the state. Sadly a lot of angry white guys from other states are migrating to the western part of the state, so the things I loved about that area are probably a bit tarnished.
I do miss cultural diversity where we are now (eastern part) and as we age, the winters are harder to take.

I liked it when Republicans whined about Schweitzer bringing his dog to work at the state Capitol.
If he had been a Republican, they would've loved it.

Kalispell and the Bitterroot Valley are pretty areas, but very right wing. Like scary, creepy right wing, not normal right wing. Some people are trying to turn Kalispell into the new Hayden Lake.
Whitefish is nice, but ritzy. It's turning into the Jackson Hole of Montana.

Changes already noticed even without pole shifts Ground here never froze all winter last year. Bird migration changing and bugs I never saw here are now here in numbers
Used to be semi-tropical here. All those dinosaur bones they pull out of the strata here abouts speak of a lusher time. There are fossil remains of fig trees and giant sequoias in my area too.
An old buddy used to wear Hawaiian print shirts under his parka, chanting 'pole shift, any day now'. That sort of faith will be rewarded!
