No, America is not "owned" by any 1%, of course. That is propaganda propagated by politicians roiling the American people to gain advantage in the elections, and foisted on the American public by the usual anti-capitalists.

Really? You mean that these "1%" own everyones' houses? Nobody in your state owns a house? Nobody owns a store? Nobody owns a gas station except these 1%ers? They also own every park in every city and the state parks, too?

Amazing! I never knew they owned so much!

There are many pro-capitalists in the 99%. Some are disappointed in the direction in which the loosely defined term has taken us, and still others would like some form of restoration of capitalism.

Speaking for myself now, I would like a return to the day when people actually could afford to buy the products that they make, not only in this country, but for the world. Corporations exert the major influence (virtual rule) over important provisions of capitalism, such as wage labor, especially since NAFTA and various free trade agreements have come to fruition. For a nation that valued investment in the quality of life this virtual rule by multi-national corporations is very much a breech in sovereignty. Placing America in direct labor competition with nations that have never been able to invest in clean drinking water, occupational safety, health care, and environmental safety caused an exodus of industry. Efforts to rebuild industry are sabotaged by fake claims of economic preclusion. Anyone can see that money doesn't cause the sun to rise and crops to grow in the field. Anyone can see that money doesn't cause trucks and trains to operate. That work is done by energy. Anyone can see that money does not cause the assembly line to move. That work is done by people.

Instead of the audacity of hope they got the austerity of nope. People are not going to accept this and they should not.

No, I have no mortgage. I have no debts. Not a single debt.

The only thing that can be considered some "debt" is a small mortgage I have on an INCOME property, but I am using THEIR money to increase MY income. So, if what you say is true - the 1% loaned me the money - then I must thank them because THEY helped ME make money!

There is something else to consider: If these alleged 1%ers are holding the mortgages, there are two questions:

      1. Shouldn't you and others be GRATEFUL that money is available for you to purchase things in advance, rather than waiting until you save up to buy them?

      2. Do you think that somehow you should be just GIVEN this money with no strings attached? That is, if one cannot meet his obligations, should he just be "forgiven" his debts? Is that what you think?

You claimed that “they” OWNED everything, and obviously “they” do not, of course.

The day of reckoning has been coming for a long time. Labor has asked for too much money and benefits.

The truth is that products are actually cheaper than before, if we look at it in absolute terms, not relative ones. Example: New houses are actually DOUBLE in size from those built in the 1950s. Cars are better. Food is cheaper.

That may seem difficult to believe, but all one has to do is look at the condition of the poor in general, ignoring the sensational stuff: Most public housing projects have air conditioning, and the people living in them have cars and televisions.

In my own life, my family is lower in economic RANK than that of my father’s when I grew up, yet we have MORE: Our house is bigger, we take more trips, our cars are better, and we have more variety of food.

If we look at the very short run, it can look bad. However, if we take a longer view, we can see things have gotten much, much better.

NAFTA has resulted in more job creation in America. And free trade helps everyone. There is no “rule” by multi-national corporations. That is a myth that has been going on in one form or another for over a century in America. Since the late 19th century, in fact with the myth of the supposed “Robber Barons” who were ostensibly impoverishing people when, in fact, most people’s lives were enriched by their entrepreneurial endeavors and creative wealth building.

We HAVE TO compete with the rest of the world in the open market. If we do not, the time of reckoning is just delayed. Under the great Ronald Reagan, we came out ahead in technology, a world leader in the global economy. If we shut our borders, restrict trade and give in to union THUGS, we will regress both economically and politically.

The products are not overpriced, of course. Take a look around you.

The mythical 1% actually pay more than the so-called silly "fair share," of course. They take in about 25% of the national income yet pay 37% of the taxes.

Hey! That is 50% HIGHER than they should be paying.

      Isn't learning fun?

    • Asian English can be confusing to us on this side of the Pacific. A China news agency is presenting their look at U.S. poor. It reminds me years ago when U.S. news would look at China poor. I'm thinking about the irony.
