Iowa is over, for all intents and purposes, and it did not matter who won. With 100% of the votes counted, the top two candidates are separated by only eight votes, so both will take six delegates in Iowa. Here are the final results:

    • Actually, the winner in this contest does matter an awful lot. Rick Santorum's surge is not going to be momentary and it will decide the tone of the campaign for the next six months. It is going to be anti-gay, anti-muslim, anti-minority, and anti-progressive. Who could have seen that coming? Romney will have to go further to the right and any hope at moderation was just sacrificed on an altar of theological Republicanism. Without President Obama active in a primary there is no competing message and hate has just become the new normal.
