Actually, the winner in this contest does matter an awful lot. Rick Santorum's surge is not going to be momentary and it will decide the tone of the campaign for the next six months. It is going to be anti-gay, anti-muslim, anti-minority, and anti-progressive. Who could have seen that coming? Romney will have to go further to the right and any hope at moderation was just sacrificed on an altar of theological Republicanism. Without President Obama active in a primary there is no competing message and hate has just become the new normal.

Mike, did you miss the point? It was that, because it was a dead heat, it would not have mattered if the top two had been reversed.
Even though Obama was not active, 25,000 Democrats still turned out.
