Santorum: Climate Scientists Admit Solutions Won't Do Anything to Solve the Problem

thedirtman
Transcript of Rick Santorum's climate change talk in Belmont, NH:

Voter: I was wondering how you’ve integrated your financial policies with the findings of current climate change science.

Rick Santorum: The question is on how do I get my policies with climate change science.
I get asked this question a lot, and you look at the data and you can see some change in the climate.
But then again, pick a point in history where you haven’t seen a change in the climate.
The climate does change.
The question is, what is causing the climate to change.
And I think most scientists, in fact, I assume all scientists would agree there are a variety of factors that cause the climate change.
I don’t think any scientist in the world would suggest there isn’t a variety of factors, and I think the vast majority of scientists would say there’s probably a hundred factors that cause the climate to change.
And so why have we decided that this one particular factor, carbon dioxide, is in fact that tip of the tail that wags the entire dog.
Why from a scientific point of view do we make the assertion that this is in fact what is the case when there is a whole lot of other factors out there that could be affecting it?
So, that’s the question.
Some people have very strong feelings that it is that.
There are a lot of other people who don’t.
Here’s the question.
Let’s even assume, for purposes of argument, not that I agree with it, but for purposes of argument, that they are right.
Then what would be a rational response?
Well, if you have a problem and you want to craft something, what should that thing that you’re crafting do?
Solve the problem.
Do any of the proposed solutions put forward by Al Gore and his friends do anything to solve the problem?
Even the scientists who support the theory will admit to you that it doesn’t do anything to solve the problem.
So query, why support the solution, other than you may have some other agenda that may be in place here.
Right?
And let’s go back to what that agenda is.
There’s a common theme that you should be hearing here.
They don’t trust you to allocate resources in a way that they believe is best, and so they want to have a system that forces you to do what they think you should do in running your business and your lives.

Rick Santorum may want to pay a visit to the EPA website, where he will learn that scientists and policy makers have identified a number major greenhouse gases being emitted into the atmosphere by human activities, including methane, nitrous oxide, and flourinated gases.

    • Santorum is another anti-science freak. Who was in this crowd that after his babbling answer applauded? Are these Rep voters so devoid of individual thought that they don't even know when statements make sense? He pratically strangled his brain with his tongue! He can't even eloquently spew the right wing talking points. But with crowds like this, he knows he doen't have to. They just hear "climate change..bad and we must clap." I proudly have a "Got Science?" bumper sticker on my car. :)

Many of these people profess to like science, but ultimately it comes down to thinking that politics trumps science. Science seeks the truth, while politics seeks to be convincing. The need to appear 'convincing' is part of their quest for power.

Of course, the compromise of truth for power means the compromise of knowledge. Anyway you look at it, placing power before knowledge eventually requires an increasing amount of stupidity on the part of your followers. I think we've gone too far with advancing stupidity, and it's time to get back to plain truth.

    • Notice how pRick only cites "Al Gore and his friends" for sollutions on climate change. Not the tens of thousands of scientists who all agree that global warming is caused by carbon dioxide and have urged us to curtail fossil fuel use for the past 50 years?
And all the other rethuglican candidates (excluding Huntsman but including Paul) believe that manmade global warming is a hoax and conspiracy by greedy scientists.
We can NOT let any of these imbeciles become our next President!
That would be the end of the world. ;)

    • Talk about convoluting an argument...I think his brain cells only fire up about two or three times a day...the rest of the time they muddle and grumble and turn out babel that only a few people seem to be able to comprehend...or is it they don't comprehend, they just don't want to look stupid (more than they are) so they just smile, nod and go along...WAFI and the last word is idiot...

So does that mean that every time an idea is proved incorrect or an experiment fails, it is no use looking for the idea that does work? How many light bulbs did Edison design before he came up with a design that worked? Santorum is completely ignorant of scientific methods and practices.

I might go one step farther and say that S******m is rabidly opposed to scientific methods and practices, particularly where they contradict his predetermined faith. But to get back to what I said before, a solution is something that solves a problem.

    • JanforGore:

      Hello JanforGore,

I think there is lying going on too. Santorum tried to create deception through confusion with this:

"Even the scientists who support the theory will admit to you that it doesn’t do anything to solve the problem."

What is 'it' that Santorum is referring to here? As an Ivy League graduate student of science, I do not remember Al Gore ever said anything like this. Have you? I think Santorum is making whatever stuff up just to be vicious.

Yes, and what scientists? The ones I have seen who know about this have laid out specific solutions regarding it as has Al Gore. But of course, those solutions impinge on his receipt of campaign cash so of course he like all of them is going to BS people. Just once I would like to see a mob of people shouting him down when he spews this garbage. I will be looking to see if he shows up in Nj anywhere near where I am. I'll ask him if CO2 traps heat just to hear what he says.

    • So, now that they are having a really Hard time denying climate change they are changing their tune to "We can't do anything about it so we should just give up and Eliminate all regulations." The Kochs should be proud of him for towing the line.

    • Santorum should be a grand case study in the War On Intelligent Thought. Santorum describes climate change as a case of hopelessness against a background of muddy confusion. According to Santorum, climate scientists, who are Al Gore's friends, are forced into admitting that our best solutions do nothing at all. In fact, this must be a conspiracy of evil doers that will force you to act against your will.

Anything seem wrong with this scenario?

Well, let's say you are really hungry, and it's late and you have nothing to eat. An acquaintance has some week old pizza that is for the taking. You know the pizza may make you sick, but there is no one there to remind you. You eat the pizza and fall sick.

How do you really know the pizza made you sick? The question is, what is causing the stomach to be sick. Scientists admit there are many things that can make you sick. How do you know this is that tip of the tail that wags the entire dog? Even if you did not eat the pizza you would still be hungry. Didn't that pizza acquaintance really have an evil agenda that would force you to do things against your will?

We knew that carbon dioxide would increase atmospheric heat retention in the 19th Century, well before we put it there. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svante_Arrhenius) This is not news at all. Timing and the sequence of events might be an indication that something about the CO2 emissions is wrong. First, the planet is okay, then there are CO2 emissions, then the planet is not okay. Another indication: the type and magnitude of the illness that follows is precisely what is expected. You think there could be global warming, and voila, global warming. The experts told you that week CO2 would make you sick and it did. So how do you know?

As a matter of fact, every indication came to fruition exactly as feared. That is how one might know.
