Ron Paul Destroys ChickenHawk Newt Gingrich: "I went."

Dagum
Ron Paul calls out ChickenHawk and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich for not serving in the military and taking a deferment during the Vietnam War during Saturday night's debate in New Hampshire.

Republican Ron Paul was married with two children when his Air Force draft order came and he still served.

"People who don't serve when they could and they get 3 or 4 or even 5 deferments have no right to send our kids off to wars." "I'm trying to stop the wars but at least I went when they called me up." "The veterans problem is a big one. We have hundreds of thousands coming back from these wars that were undeclared, unnecessary, haven't been won and we have an epidemic of suicide among veterans."

Gingrich responded that he comes from a military family — an “Army brat” — and said he wasn’t eligible for the draft because he was married with a child. And then appeared to get a little choked up recalling his father’s service.

“I think I have a pretty good idea of what it’s like as a family to worry about your father getting killed,” Gingrich said. “And I personally resent the kind of comments and aspersions he routinely makes without accurate information and then just slurs people with."

“I need only one follow up. When I was drafted, I was married and had two kids,” Paul said. “And I went.”

    • Gingrich's cowardice and hypocrisy epitomizes the attitude of the 1%.
"WE start the wars fought by the 99% because ....WE CAN!"

    • Newt likened his being a teacher at a war college as service. STFU!
What an argument. I do like the way Paul went after him. I too feel that really, POTUS should all have served in the military if they are going to be Commander in Chief. Although, I'm also a bit conflicted on this issue, if someone served in government - truly served, not as an elected official I could see this counting.

But, to go to college, go to law school, be hired by some firm in NY, go on to make huge money until your early 30's, run for congress, spend a few years there, then run for president. Nope, I'm not going to sanction that even though, this is the way it's going to be happening more and more.

Remember, we haven't had an end to a "heroic war" since WWII. So, there are no Eisenhowers waiting in the wings to rescue our political system.

    • Ron paul won that exchange, but i find it ironic that a libertarian anti-war guy would be criticizing someone for not going to WAR in vietnam. But i reject the idea that a leader that hasn't been in war has no right to send troops into battle, because if the war is unjust it should not be happening in the first place regardless of who is running the nation and if it is just then it is necessary.

My perception was that RP was implying cowardice and shirking on Newt's part; NOT the morality or justness of the Viet Nam (or future conflicts)i.e, he wasn't referring to a policy stance, or a philosophy; but rather Newt's flawed character And therefore unfitness for Commander-in-Chief..

    • Well, you know..... if you take a step back..... forget about who you're for or not for..... and look at all the potential candidates as a group..... you have to ask yourself, "Is this the best we can do?"
And if it is, we've really got to rethink this process.

    • Paul was right about Newt, but that does not change Paul's despicable past, or his current association with racists, antisemites, homophobes and Christian extremists.

Just a fair question for you.
Who do you support and why?

And fuck no I am not a Paul supporter.
I am just wondering why your vitriol is blinding you to the fact that this is a country where people are free to support whomever they please without fear of repercussions.
      Supposedly.
Obama is no better than Paul.
      Nor any other "politician."
So please enlighten me if you will.
      You seem intelligent enough.
EVERYBODY here knows how you feel about Paul and yet you have gone over the top with your persistent and sometimes childish rants and attacks on other members.
You are really beating a dead horse.
      Getting old dude/dudette.

And please god be an adult just once and do not go off on another paul rant.
      We get it.
Just answer the question in a civil manner.
Or do not even bother responding.

I am no fan of Ron Paul but as a veteran, I have agreed with that thought ever since I came back. Nothing pisses me off more than Chicken Hawks.

    • Unlike the rest of GOP candidates and president Obama's slippery responses and actions, Ron Paul practices what he preaches. He is the only one who consistently speaks for American citizen's rights.

Does that really make a difference? He served as a Flight Surgeon and then as part of the National Guard. His duty is no less than anyone else in the military. The fact of WHERE he served is a non-issue and you disgrace a lot of vets who served within our borders, or abroad and not on the front line. The military is a big machine. You don't need to be a meat bag to fulfill your duty.

    • There are many things I agree with Mr. Paul about, this is one of them. There are a few things I disagree with Mr. Paul about and those, in my opinion, disqualify him to be our President.

I would like it if he stayed in The House of Representatives.

No. I agree with him on many of his social policies. I disagree with him on all of his economic policies because they will bankrupt this nation and damned near everyone in it.
