This is a societal problem; we all share the blame somewhat.

Incredulous:
Good point.
Especially, since being a parent is the most underpaid and most important job in the world. But, what the hell does the FDA know about raising children?
Bringing a child into this world is a very serious responsibility, and it can also be the most rewarding.
Children need to be loved, not abused. Abusing them with pills they don't need is as horrible as abusing them with physical or emotional (verbal) abuse.

It's not just foster children... How many impoverished children on medicaid can have their parents convinced they have an "Illness".... A Whole Lot....
I remember when Ritalin got popular, there were even plenty of middle class kids, parents who had plenty of education being convinced their kids were "Ill" and "needed" those drugs...
It's all about the money, and parents don't realize how much in money and paid-vacations, a Dr. can get for prescribing the newest (or preferred by some some company) stuff ... Problem or not...
(You ever been skipped over in the Dr.'s Office by a pharmaceutical rep? Ever overhear one of their conversations?)
I guarantee you their are 10 times as many children with at least one parent, that are on dangerous psych drugs... The vast majority of which don't need the first pill, but their Dr. that sees 400+ other patients doesn't have time.
And the whole counseling or therapy branch of child psychology, actual therapists... That shit is a racket...
The average shrink was bringing in around $100 and hour, while the office they're working out of made around $200 an hour (this was in the early to mid (90's), and most of that charged to medicaid, or some insurance.....
I knew a psychiatrist the worked with children who eventually quit because the system itself was so corrupt.....

Those dollar figures are still fairly accurate. The initial visit is about $250 with each subsequent visit ranging from $195-$225.

I prefer that that horrid "doctor" being forced to take all the medication that he thought would be acceptable to a child on a daily basis and let's see how he makes out.

Good story, this has been going on far too long. "The two-year investigation in Florida, Massachusetts, Michigan, Oregon and Texas found that foster children were prescribed psychotropic drugs at rates 2.7 to 4.5 times higher than other children in Medicaid in 2008. Psychotropic drugs include those used to treat ADHD, anxiety, depression and psychosis. In total, the five states spent more than $375 million in Medicaid funds for psychotropic drugs for both foster and non-foster children. "
Ke'onte Cook, a 12-year-old from Texas who testified at the Senate hearing, was on up to five drugs at a time while in foster care, including for bipolar disorder. The drugs made him irritable and exhausted, he said, caused a loss of appetite and "put me in a lights-out mode 15 minutes after I'd taken them." Cook was adopted two years ago, and is now off all of the medications he was on while in foster care.
"I think putting me on all of these stupid meds was the most idiotic thing I experienced in foster care, and the worst thing someone could do to foster kids," Cook said. "I was upset about my situation, not bipolar or ADHD."
