Image

This spring, Iraqis inspired by neighboring Arab countries began protesting against their government in a square in Baghdad, one which shares its name with the better known counterpart in Cairo – Tahrir. But Iraqi journalists trying to cover these protests, were all but silenced by the government’s security forces. In today’s Iraq, journalists who speak out are routinely imprisoned, beaten, or just simply killed.
