Oh look, it’s been 10 minutes since the last Republican assault on gay rights. That means some legislator should be filling the void right about…now.
Today’s pointless bit of gay-bashing comes from Oklahoma Representative Mike Reynolds (R-Oklahoma City). Not content with moving on after the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, Rep. Reynolds is looking to bar the LGBT community from honorably serving in the Oklahoma National Guard. Also not content with allowing them to serve in secrecy, which was a key component of DADT that was regularly and illegally ignored, the new bill would allow recruiters and officials to actually ask what a service persons’ sexual orientation is. Because the GOP believes in small, unobtrusive government except when they can use it to enforce their arbitrary morality.
It should be noted that after the repeal of DADT over a year ago, the military has not fallen apart or erupted into open revolt. Incidences of anti-gay behavior have been few and most soldiers barely blinked, much to the chagrin of the hatemongers at the GOP. On the other hand, over 193 million dollars (at least) were wasted pursuing, exposing, discharging and then replacing LGBT service members. An excellent use of our resources, no doubt.
Perhaps Rep. Reynolds could think of some other way to harass homosexuals while placating the aggrieved senses of his fellow religious fanatics? One that hasn’t been completely and utterly disproven by real world experience?
