The undeniable Racist, Elitist, Republican Debate Audiences! And the Ultimate insult: Debate held on MLK Day in South Carolina!

Image

Last Republican Debate held true again, the Redneck Racists of the Republican Party!
But of course little of these knuckleheads knows the facts that White folks make up 39% of welfare, Black Folks 37%, and Hispanics 17%. But of course Gingrich keeps calling President Obama the Food Stamp President, gee I wonder why? The great recession was handed off by the Republicans, and people need to eat! Is the Republican Party that out of touch with reality?

I'll give Newt Gingrich this much: He knows how to play the race card for everything it's worth, and does it without even batting an eyelash. I think the apex of Monday's debate was this moment when Juan Williams asked Gingrich a direct question about how his thinly-veiled racist attitudes play with African American voters, and whether he regretted his positions. Here's the question and answer:

WILLIAMS: Speaker Gingrich, you recently said black Americans should demand jobs, not food stamps. You also said poor kids lack a strong work ethic and proposed having them work as janitors in their schools. Can’t you see that this is viewed, at a minimum, as insulting to all Americans, but particularly to black Americans?

GINGRICH: No. I don’t see that.

The audience roared. Absolutely roared. Salon writer Steve Kornacki's analysis was right on the money:

In a general election debate, this might have been a challenging question for Gingrich to field. But this was a GOP primary debate in a state where the modern Republican Party was essentially created out of a white backlash against the Democratic Party’s embrace of civil rights. Some in the live audience in Myrtle Beach hissed at Williams, one of the few Democratic-friendly voices on Fox, and Gingrich milked their outrage for all it was worth.

Yes, yes he did. Not content to re-emphasize his barely-concealed disdain for those sponging poor folk who obviously have no decent role models so they can learn how to work, he went on to declare this:

You could take one janitor and hire 30-some kids to work in the school for the price of one janitor, and those 30 kids would be a lot less likely to drop out. They would actually have money in their pocket. They’d learn to show up for work. They could do light janitorial duty. They could work in the cafeteria. They could work in the front office. They could work in the library. They’d be getting money, which is a good thing if you’re poor. Only the elites despise earning money.

Ooh. A two-fer. He gets to nail those piggy union janitors in New York and play right into the heart of the crowd with the "elites" comment. Except it's not accurate. The union employees Gingrich is referring to here are known as "custodial engineers." And as FactCheck.org notes, the starting pay for one of those employees is about $56,000 in New York. However, a custodial engineer isn't really a janitor in the sense that Gingrich describes. A custodial engineer is a management position. A "cleaner" makes about $32,000 per year.

In Newt's scenario, that $30,000 per year position would be split among "30-some" kids, who would do "light janitorial duty", presumably. How many hours would students work to earn that $1,000 per year? And what happens to the adult who no longer has a job because the students are now "learning to work"? These are unanswered questions.

But never fear, Newtie didn't stop there. He knew he had the audience with him and the momentum on his side, particularly after the audience booed loudly and tried to shout Juan Williams' next question down.

    • I used to just think to myself when around conservative friends who like to use the N-word "because blacks can say it" that republicans have become a bunch of racist rednecks.
But lately I am saying it to their face.

    • January 21, 2008, MLK day. The Democrat Party held their presidential debate on this day. Rep. Bennie Thompson, (D- Mississippi) opined at that time, "What better tribute to the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. than to host such an important education event on the day we celebrate his birthday?" Gee would this be the racist left?
Marked down. This is another example of the disengenuous left, the "it's wrong if you do it but ok if I do it" group, trying to make hay out of horse crap. THIS is why there is such division and problems in this country. THIS is why I look with such skepticism when the left plays the "racism" card. If they would not throw this card on the table at every issue they would get more mileage out of it. As it is the left are the true racists for trying to gin it up where there is none.

So your trying to tell us, a bunch of Dems had overwhelming applause lines for racist remarks during that debate? Cause if you are, I don't remember such a thing being done during that debate. You see this why you guys on the right don't clearly see how even what you just said was highly insensitive! Get a clue would you!

Paratus, if you cannot, or rather , will not see the difference between acknowledging increased educational opportunities and suggesting that black children clean school toilets then you are hopeless.
If Newts intention was not meant to be insulting why then, didn't he suggest that those same students could, instead of doing the most menial, symbolically distasteful tasks, intern at software developing firms, or architectural offices , or financial institutions? The innuendo was clear and the rise it got from the people from the state that still flew the confederate flag over it's capital as late as 2000 testifies to that.
Your support for the people who hold those views reveal your character...you are as transparent as a pane of glass...

Oh horse crap. Quit trying to make what I said something I didn't. You are full of it. Re read my post. As usual you put so much spin on it I am surprised that it stays on the computer screen. My comments are related to MLK day and the fact that the Dems held a debate on that day in 2008 and now that the RNC used MLK day for thier debate, for some reason it is racist in your mind. You know exactIy what I am speaking of so don't try to dredge up some lie. The only other subject in my response is the pointing out the hypocrisy of the left and their lies about this. As usual, the "racism" charge is bogus. It's the boy who cried wolf all over again. This is so tiring.

Most of the DOAs we see are getting CPR when we arrive or already in asystole and we can't do anything anyhow. If it is pulmonary we have a pretty good chance of getting them back depending on how long they have been down. Cardiac, not so good regardless. When we pick up people we don't deal with insurance. I HAVE had people pull out a checkbook and offer a check which we refuse. I have also had people tell us they don't have any insurance to which we respond that it doesn't matter. Let me repeat this in case you are having difficulty comprehending it. We don't screen patients, we don't dish out care based on social status. I don't know of any EMS personnel who would even entertain the thought that this would be correct. We do this because we enjoy it. Believe me, it isn't for the money. We have protocols we abide by which are based on presentation, not on anything else. What trys out patience are the transports for sore ears, toes or throats because invariably, during the transport we will get a chest pain call and have to pass on it. Can't kick the patient out of the truck for a better medical problem. Why don't you ride along with EMS in your area. If what you are saying is the case in your area then you are invited to come ride with me, you can even stay in one of our spare bedrooms so you don't incur motel expense, and see what it is like.

    • These debates have vetted these candidates and the Republican Party. We have been given an advance copy of Mein Kampf. The fascists, racists, and corporate criminals have had a spotlight shined on them. If the American public votes for one of these characters for President; or continues their majority in the House of Representatives, then we deserve what we get.

there were so many affronts during that fiasco to the notion of

Mr. Carver over came the road blocks in his path, worked to put himself thru college, and started a career that stemmed from his days helping his master's wife with chores around the house. A true role model for todays youth.

We need more youths like this today with the motivation and desire to learn.

All of the motivation in the world doesn't lead to scientific achievement. I don't think you are stupid, so you must have a problem accepting the fact of Carver's genius. It is very sad to have to lie to yourself in order to cope with your insecurities.

So being a janitor at a company, working up to the mail room, material stacker, then the production floor, to production floor management, these things are beneath the youth of today ? Guess what the real world requires that you sometimes do things that you would rather not in order to accomplish a greater goal.

From you stance on "the work of a janitor" I take it that you would rather relegate those positions to migrant workers since American kids cannot be expected to do such humiliating work. Pretty progressive of you.

Are the white children who helped their masters wife with chores around the house equally inspiring role models? Just how inspiring is it for children to find out that the land of the free was built, for almost half of it's existence, on the backs of slaves? I suppose today's white children don't much need role models like George Washington Carver. Since Newt and his ilk seem to think only the African American children need to be reintroduced to the work ethic. Which youths were you talking about? I wouldn't want to get the meaning of your post wrong. I'm not saying that you think like Newt or anybody else. But the things he says makes it look like he thinks only the African American children need this. And why, I wonder, does he always talk about cleaning bathrooms. Can't he come up with any other kind of work that would help him sell his ideas. When he says things the way he says them, it makes it to easy for his detractors. I had a part time job when I was a kid. Didn't hurt me in any way. I worked for six hours every weekday through the school summer holidays, pushing seed onions out of gravity bins, from the time I was twelve until I was sixteen. I can still remember the first day Harvey gave me my own pay envelope with all that cash in it. Why I thought I was the richest kid that ever lived. Once I was in my second year of high school , I was given an absence exemption for the first three weeks of the school year, for grades ten trough twelve, in order to help bring in the tobacco harvest. Newt saying that children can work is not such a ridiculous idea. It's how he says it that stinks.

That would be all youths. The reference here was "poor kids" if you want to take that as code for "black kids" i'll not take that argument as we would need a menu of words and their meaning to discourse.

      from the op
"White folks make up 39% of welfare, Black Folks 37%, and Hispanics 17%"

I'd say that there are a lot of poor kids from both races and they need all the positive motivation they can get.

    • crabbyoldguy:

No no . I was not taking it as code for anything. I agree that there is no good reason for a child not to have a part time job to teach them the work ethic. I like to think of myself as a good example for the reasons I stated. I went on to college and I am now in the health sciences. In no small measure because of the work ethic instilled in me in those years working part time as a youth. What I was trying to say, is the way Newt sells the idea is causing the division between people. I don't know if Newt is doing it on purpose or not. Or even if my observation is correct. Look at the conversation you were having with tverdell. In my mind, not very productive, because the way things are being said by Newt, and others like him, make it look like a black and white thing, when you and I both know black and white has nothing to do with it. And yes, positive motivation of any kind is a good thing. No matter where it comes from.

I can't speak to what Newt's intention was for the “cleaning bathrooms” line of responses, his point could have been made in a less controversial way but I speculate that “mowing the grass” would have been met with the same outcry from some.

It would be nice if some of the MSM went to the schools and polled the kids on what they thought of the idea of working at the school, not exclusive bathroom stuff, but have it in there, and run some stories on the results.

I've heard that working with tobacco is a touch on the nasty side, is this true?

Very. That's why we were never allowed to do it till we where older and knew enough to keep the tar of our hands, and wise enough to stay safe around the priming machines. As far as the MSM is concerned, I agree, they could ask the kids, and their parents what they think of this idea. I doubt many of the parents didn't work at something when they were young people. This whole thing seems a little odd to me. I can't help thinking the politicians are using it for political gain. You know, the far right Republican base does seem to like it when Newt makes these veiled racist comments. That's how it seems. You can be a good Conservative without liking what the far right represents. We have had a Conservative government in Canada since 2006, and in the summer election we gave them the House of Commons until 2016. I myself, who may sound liberal by the American sense of things, and describe myself as liberal minded, has voted conservative in Canada many times. I must admit , not in our last federal election. But I certainly plan to do so in our next provincial election. The liberals in Ontario are getting a little to use to mantel of power for my liking. But you would have a hard time getting any Canadian to go along with what the far right in the U.S. is doing and saying right now. If you are a Conservative crabbyoldguy, I would hope that you see that the far right could be taking you down the wrong road. This isn't Ronald Reagan's party anymore. But who am I to ask you to reflect on your own beliefs? I mean no disrespect.

Sorry I drifted off there. Being in California I can sympathize with your unease of one party controlling power for an extended period of time. One can see the craziness up close that comes out of a political system out of control, and the pandering bull crap that spews forth as the politicians grease the hands of friends and family all the while proclaiming how they are the only ones that will keep the fire/police/school's open. The last election they had some crap tax increases on the ballot, and out comes the dems saying everything is going to close up because they were out of money, which they are but it doesn’t stop them from using transportation dollars to paint murals under overpasses. They then proceeded to close a bunch of the rest areas on the interstate highway and along some beaches to make their point. In the end the tax raise did not go thru and every one of the rest areas opened back up.

When the mayor of a city(LA) can take 40 thousand dollars+ worth of event tickets from companies doing business with the city and then claim that he didn't know it was wrong and get away with it is maddening. To top it off the dems held a special fund raiser to gather funds to pay the fines and reimburse the cost of the tickets.

Things that make you go ARGGHHHHH.

That's the kind of thing that will drive anybody crazy. Murals under overpasses? Really? The Liberal party here did the same thing. It happened that the Liberals under Jean Chretien, our Prime Minister at the time, were paying large amounts of money to political and business friends, for favors, and contracts in which little or no work was done. This took place in the early part of the last decade. Inquiries were held, people were arrested and convictions were made. The evidence showed that the Prime Minister himself had no knowledge of the payments, and I have no reason to doubt this. But I agree with the Inquiry which said "The Prime Minister must bear some of the responsibility because the program was run under his office". Sounds about right to me. The Conservative party here fell into their own pot of hot water for accepting kickbacks from a man named Karlheinz Schreiber, who represented the airplane manufacturer Airbus. These kickbacks were to secure a contract between Airbus and the Canadian government worth $1.8 billion dollars. That's billion, with a b. Fortunately for us in Canada, These political crooks have a hard time getting away with this kind of stuff. Try it here, and your just as likely to find yourself in jail as rich.

Anything else is alien to their purpose and as we have seen in the past nothing is beneath them to obtain their goals. Sad, pathetic examples of humanity that are patently evil.

The fact of the matter is this whole country relies on RACISM & SLAVERY to provide the vast majority of it's consumer goods. Every president has known it, everyone with eyes and a brain since long before Kathy Lee Gifford got busted supplying her clothing line from Honduran sweat shops knows it...

To now you got MICROSOFT thriving off slavery, Jon Stewart hit the nail on the head last night.... And what of our leaders on both sides? How can they allow these corporations to trade within our borders?

How can you tell me Libya was a "Humanitarian Crisis" that needed our intervention, when the slavery that feeds our monstrosity is so despicable it won't allow it's victims the dignity of suicide?

Where the FUCK is Obama? Sipping Fiji Water, pretending it wasn't brought to him by an oppressive military junta?

This is what I don't get and most don't want to accept; You can't just justify liberty and justice for some. You can't be racist against the Chinese, or the Honduran, and say you give a shit about any other race, with that mentality you show a lack of concern for HUMANITY that crosses all the imaginary lines in your elitist imaginings......

Yes..... The vast majority of republicans are racist, there is no dispute there. But you can't paint this "black & white" bullshit narrow sighted view of racism and hide behind whichever slave driver you want, you know the whole goddamned country thrives on slavery.......

With most of you fat bastards (generalized statement not directed at anyone) so lazy and complacent you don't care, so don't point the finger at the right claiming they hold a monopoly on it, because unless you're out fighting it every day, every where it rears it's ugly head.... Jon brings up the point that to bring the jobs back all to the US the cost of production needs to be equal between nations suggesting that China needs unions to close the parity. So now China is having it's industrial growth peroid and we must whine and complain because jobs have left the US, So How long will it take for parity to be achieved and once it is achieved will the bulk of production move to another country with lower labor cost ? It's a vicious cycle that's just starting.
