He wouldn't allow some Travel Suppression Agent to pat him down to make sure he wasn't with Al Qaeda.***
Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul was detained Monday by the Transportation Security Administration in Nashville, Tenn., after refusing a full body pat-down, POLITICO has confirmed.
“I spoke with him five minutes ago and he was being detained indefinitely,” Paul spokesperson Moira Bagley said. “The image scan went off; he refused patdown.”
“My son @SenRandPaul being detained by TSA for refusing full body pat-down after anomaly in body scanner in Nashville. More details coming,” wrote the authenticated Twitter account of presidential candidate Ron Paul.
Like his father, Rand Paul has libertarian leanings and has been a fierce critic of TSA’s pat-downs of passengers at airports, which he views as government overreach. The senator grilled TSA Administrator John Pistole last year after a 6-year-old girl from Paul’s hometown, was patted down by airport security.
“I guess this little girl would be part of the random pat-downs, this little girl from Bowling Green, Kentucky, one of my constituents,” Paul said, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. “They’re still quite unhappy with you guys as well as myself and a lot of other Americans who think you’ve gone overboard, you’re missing the boat on terrorism because you’re doing these invasive searches on six-year-old girls.”

The facts are that WE all are subject to the law; the Paul family is no exception and for elected officials to willfully break the law needs to be addressed, as you say "they're not for any of that shit." they just are it.

Give me a break. This was just a stunt on his part because he doesn't believe in the TSA. If you want people to be able to carry guns or bombs on board planes eliminate the TSA. Remember the big stink the GOP made about the "underpants bomber"? Well you can't have it both ways.

So what if it's a stunt though? We need stunts to change peoples' minds about this.
Keep in mind, the TSA has never once prevented anyone from committing terrorist acts on a plane. All of the time terrorists have been caught on planes they've been caught by intelligence/police agencies like the FBI or MI6.

So you want to eliminate the TSA entirely? Which is what he wants. Don't you want to ensure that the plane you are flying on is safe? The TSA does more than pat down passengers. They control Air Traffic Controllers, plane safety, and airport security. By the way, if you didn't have airport security anybody could board a plane carrying a gun (they don't have to be a terrorist, they could just be deranged) and decide to shoot people on the plane.
It may be a pain to go through airport security these days, but I'd rather be a little inconvenience then sorry. What is needed though is proper training of security people so they all know how to do a pat down. But the GOP keep blocking any budget increases for the TSA, plus block Obama's nomination for the head of the TSA. The GOP want to do everything on the cheap and then complain about the service.

As far as searches go, I wish we did not have them but I have yet to hear a viable alternative. That's not what I got from BWDT's comment.
While I commend Rand Paul for his fight against the invasive screenings, they are the law of the land. He is in a position to help change that. One hopes he does.
In the meantime, when bigots who are all for picking on others base on the casing get caught up in an abusive system themselves, well, it's called equality I guess, and might be a lesson.
Also, BWDT made a very good point re people trying to bring guns on planes. The ones who seem to get busted for that do not fit the terrorist profiles so the profiles are pretty much useless if one is genuinely interested in real security.
Using 'security' as a beard to lend the illusion of propriety to institutionalized bigotry is just obnoxious, and does not make ANYBODY safer.
