    • When I was a graduate student in English at Cal State Sacramento in the mid 90s, I was constantly imploring the freshman students in my remedial English and study skills classes to think critically and creatively. What I discovered is that our once highly regarded educational system had rendered them unable to do either one. They sat passively silent in their desks until I asked them, out frustration, to share what they had learned in their K-12 experience. Their answers saddened and infuriated me so much that I decided against a public school teaching career. I sincerely hope and pray that the results of this research will find its way into the public school curriculum, but I'm not holding my breath. "No Child Left Behind" has left a horrendous mess of the educational system, and lobotomized critical thinking and creativity out of the lesson plans.

So Leung and her colleagues created experiments where people acted out these metaphors. In one experiment, each participant was seated either inside or outside of a five-by-five-foot cardboard box.
