author is optimistic that the reunifying the peninsula would be beneficial to all Koreans.
The South pulled itself up from poverty to prosperity; it could also withstand the economic burden of absorbing the north.

    • North Korea under the Kims is a Jonestown. People can be imprisoned if they didn't cry sincerely enough when the latest incarnation of Caligula died.

An ideal solution would be for the Chinese, the United States and the two Koreas work out a comprehensive jointly supervised agreement to reunite the two Koreas and demilitarize the peninsula. The United Nations could particpate in crafting an agreement acceptable to all parties, that could be phased in on an agreed timetable. Sure it would be difficult. But is a nuclear armed North Korea whose missiles can easily reach the largest cities in China and run by a mercurial mafia family really a better state of affairs for China? For the USA? For the Koreas?
