School Suspends Cancer Survivor for Long Hair

Glad he beat cancer but it looks like he's wearing a hat.

Suggestion to school admins: Spend more time teaching. Spend less time trying to build robots.

From the school handbook:

HAIR/MAKEUP

A. Girls
• Hair must be clean, and neat and free of unnatural or distracting colors.
• Hairstyles determined to be distracting by the staff will not be allowed.
• Hair accessories need to be solid color in school colors, black or white and not distracting.
• Hair accessories may not be so numerous or of such size that they make noise when moved.
• Light makeup may be worn in upper grades only. Grades 6, 7, 8,9,and 10
• Light colored lip gloss or protectant for grades 5 and under.
• Makeup determined to be distracting by the staff will not be allowed.
• ONLY Clear nail polish may be worn by students in K-6.
• Students in grades 3 and above will dress for gym class. The PE uniform is to be a solid navy tee shirt worn with solid navy sweat pants or knee length shorts.
• No hats are permitted.

B. Boys
• Hair must be clean, neat, free of unnatural or distracting colors, off the collar, off the ears and out of the eyes.
• No initials, wavy lines, cut-in designs, spiked hair, Mohawks, fauxhawks, pony
tails, or pig tails.
• Braids must not touch the collar or must be pinned/braided above the collar.
• Hairstyles determined to be distracting by the staff will not be allowed.
• Facial hair must be removed or barely noticeable.
• No makeup allowed except clear lip protectant.
• No nail polish allowed.
• Students in grades 7 and above will dress for gym class. The PE uniform is to be a solid color tee shirt worn with solid color sweat pants or knee length shorts.
• No hats are permitted.

WTF Locks of Love??

"Locks of Love Communications Director Lauren Kukkamaa says that while they respect Gaskins" effort, they'd like to see him back in school.

"There are so many ways to support Locks of Love, and we are truly grateful for all of those efforts and this young man and his desire to give back," Kukkamaa said. "But certainly, we understand the school has its reasons for having certain policies in place."

Agreed, this is wrong because it is a public school. If it wasn't public, then there should be no outrage (other than for sexual discrimination).

Look at their website: The Madison Academy in Burton - They are a public school that requires uniforms, which must be ordered through the school. That is almost worse that the hair outrage in my opinion...

insanity....and it seems to be especially prevalent in our education system.

As a high schooler (did I say that right?) with long hair, I am furious about this.

WTF? This kid is just trying to help people, and show his support for people suffering from cancer.
The person who made the call on this should get the "Moron of the year" award.

A school principal who could not survive in a class room environment.

Many school exist for the sole purpose of churning out ignorant sheeple.

I had a Dr. tell me I was going to receive biased unfair treatment based almost solely on my length of hair, whether in his office or elsewhere, and me growing it for "locks of love" was irrelevant...

The world is a fuct up place...

School administration is where people go when their brains die.

I wonder why they didn't suspend the girls for long hair?

Petition signed! This is an act of true altruism from J.T. that is rarely seen anymore. This young man should be praised and emulated. It's nice to see a teen doing something like this instead of worrying about his cell phone, ipod, ipad, big screen TV, etc. But it's the school that is showing the terrible example here. Shame, shame, shame!

Absurd. With all of the real problems schools face with budget cuts, gangs, drugs, etc. students like this should be rewarded. Heartless drones.

I was suspended back in middle school for having unnatural hair color and ended up writing a 7 page report while on suspension explaining the laws that have upheld the constitution regarding these types of decisions and presented it to my principle who promptly tore it up in front of my face. Unfortunately my mother was a substitute teacher and did not have the money to support taking it any further. Conform, consume, obey. These are the lessons of our public system.

Our education system was designed and is continued in the tradition of creating mindless drones for the corpotocracy. Brought to you by John D. Rockefeller.
