In the classical sense, "liberal" used to mean you believed in and promoted individual liberty. Sadly, neither American liberals nor American conservatives - nor many of their counterparts around the world - seek anything but their brand of state control. Today's liberals want material control over your life, today's conservatives want to dictate your morality. Both only want one-half of the liberty equation, which means neither actually respect liberty at all, i.e., "you are as free as we permit."
